1. Energy Stores and Transfers |
Energy is never created or destroyed, only transferred between different stores. The main energy stores are kinetic, thermal, chemical, gravitational potential, elastic potential, and nuclear. Energy can be transferred by heating, by doing work, or by radiation.
A system is an object or group of objects. When a system changes, energy is transferred. For example, when a ball is thrown upwards, kinetic energy is transferred to gravitational potential energy. In a stretched spring, elastic potential energy is stored.
The principle of conservation of energy can be written as:
Total energy in = Total energy out
Energy is measured in joules (J). Understanding energy transfers helps us analyse mechanical systems, electrical appliances, and heating processes.
2. Energy Resources and Efficiency |
Energy resources can be renewable or non-renewable. Non-renewable resources include fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuel. They are finite and will run out. Renewable resources, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, wave, tidal, geothermal, and biomass, can be replenished and are often more sustainable.
No energy transfer is 100% efficient. Some energy is always dissipated as thermal energy to the surroundings. Efficiency is the ratio of useful output energy to total input energy, often expressed as a percentage or a decimal. The formula is:
Efficiency = Useful output energy transfer ÷ Total input energy transfer
High efficiency means less wasted energy. Reducing unwanted energy transfers, for example through lubrication or thermal insulation, increases efficiency and helps conserve resources.
3. Electricity: Current, Voltage and Resistance |
Electric current is the flow of electric charge. In a metal wire, current is carried by moving electrons. Current (I) is measured in amperes (A). The size of current is the rate of flow of charge. Charge (Q) is measured in coulombs (C). The relationship is given by:
Q = I × t
where t is time in seconds. In a closed circuit, a battery or power supply provides the potential difference (voltage) that pushes the charge around. Potential difference (V) is measured in volts (V) and is defined as the energy transferred per unit charge passed.
Resistance (R) opposes the flow of current and is measured in ohms (Ω). The potential difference, current, and resistance are connected by Ohm's law:
V = I × R
In series circuits, current is the same everywhere, but potential difference is shared. In parallel circuits, potential difference is the same across each branch, but current is split. These rules are essential for circuit analysis.
4. Circuit Components and Ohm's Law |
An ohmic conductor follows Ohm's law, meaning its resistance is constant provided the temperature remains constant. The current–potential difference graph for an ohmic conductor is a straight line through the origin. Non-ohmic components, such as filament lamps and diodes, do not have a constant resistance.
A filament lamp gets hot as current increases, causing its resistance to rise. A diode allows current to flow in one direction only and has very high resistance in the reverse direction. A thermistor's resistance decreases as temperature increases, making it useful in temperature sensors. An LDR (light-dependent resistor) has a resistance that falls when light intensity increases, useful in automatic lights.
In a series circuit, the total resistance is the sum of individual resistances: Rtotal sistance is less than the smallest individual resistance and can be found using the formula 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂. These relationships help predict circuit behaviour.
5. Particle Model and Density |
The particle model describes matter as made of tiny, moving particles. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular arrangement and vibrate in fixed positions. In liquids, particles are close together but can slide past each other. In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in random directions.
Density (ρ) is a measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume. It is calculated using:
ρ = m ÷ V
where ρ is density in kg/m³, m is mass in kg, and V is volume in m³. A material with a high density has particles packed more tightly or heavier particles. The required practical for density involves measuring mass with a balance and volume by displacement or mathematical formulas for regular objects.
6. Changes of State and Internal Energy |
Substances can change state when heated or cooled. The six changes of state are melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling or evaporation (liquid to gas), condensation (gas to liquid), sublimation (solid to gas), and deposition (gas to solid). During a change of state, the temperature of a pure substance remains constant while the change is taking place.
Internal energy is the total energy stored by the particles in a system. It is the sum of the kinetic energy (due to particle motion) and potential energy (due to the positions of particles in the force fields between them). Heating increases internal energy by increasing particle kinetic energy and/or potential energy.
Specific latent heat is the energy needed to change the state of 1 kg of a substance without changing its temperature. Specific latent heat of fusion (Lf) is for melting/freezing, and specific latent heat of vaporisation (Lv) is for boiling/condensing. Energy required is given by:
E = m × L
where E is energy in J, m is mass in kg, and L is the specific latent heat in J/kg.
7. Radioactivity and Atomic Structure |
Atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons, which determines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Some nuclei are unstable and emit radiation to become more stable. This is radioactive decay. The three main types of nuclear radiation are alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ). Alpha particles are helium nuclei, highly ionising but poorly penetrating, stopped by paper. Beta particles are fast electrons, moderately ionising and penetrating, stopped by a few mm of aluminium. Gamma rays are electromagnetic waves, weakly ionising but very penetrating, reduced by thick lead or concrete.
Radioactive decay is random. The half-life of a radioactive isotope is the time taken for half of the unstable nuclei in a sample to decay, or for the count rate to fall to half its initial value. Half-life can be used to predict how long a radioactive source will remain hazardous and is crucial for nuclear medicine and carbon dating.
8. Forces and Motion |
Forces are vector quantities, meaning they have both magnitude and direction. Scalar quantities, like speed and energy, have magnitude only. Forces can change the speed, shape, or direction of an object. Newton's First Law states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a resultant force.
Speed is a scalar measure of how fast something is moving. Velocity is speed in a given direction. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. The equations of motion for constant acceleration help calculate displacement (s), initial velocity (u), final velocity (v), acceleration (a), and time (t). Key relationships include:
v = u + at
s = ut + ½at²
v² = u² + 2as
Newton' N). When multiple forces act on an object, their combined effect is the resultant force. Free body diagrams are used to visualise forces.
9. Wave Properties |
Waves transfer energy from one place to another without transferring matter. Mechanical waves, such as sound and water waves, require a medium to travel. Electromagnetic waves, like light and radio waves, can travel through a vacuum. Waves can be transverse (oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer) or longitudinal (oscillations parallel to the direction).
All waves have properties described by wavelength (λ), frequency (f), amplitude, and wave speed (v). Frequency is the number of complete waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz). The wave equation is:
v = f × λ
s can be reflected, refracted, and diffracted. Refraction occurs when a wave changes speed as it enters a new medium, causing it to change direction unless it enters along the normal. This is seen when light passes from air into glass.
10. Electromagnetic Waves and Applications |
e spectrum is ordered by wavelength and frequency: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Radio waves have the longest wavelength and lowest frequency; gamma rays have the shortest wavelength and highest frequency.
Each region has distinct properties and uses. Radio waves are used for communication and broadcasting. Microwaves are used for satellite communication and cooking. Infrared is emitted by hot objects and used in thermal imaging and remote controls. Visible light is the small part of the spectrum detected by our eyes. Ultraviolet can cause skin tanning and is used in fluorescent lamps. X-rays are used in medical imaging and security. Gamma rays are used for sterilising medical equipment and cancer treatment.
All electromagnetic waves can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed. The energy they carry depends on their frequency; higher frequency waves carry more energy and can be harmful. It is important to use appropriate safety precautions when working with UV, X-rays, and gamma rays.
