📚 Year 10 Edexcel Economics: Key Terms Memorisation Guide | Edexcel

Mastering economics vocabulary is the first step to scoring high in your Edexcel Year 10 exams. This guide breaks down essential terms into clear, bite-sized definitions and pairs them with Chinese explanations, helping you memorise efficiently and understand deeply. Every section follows the Edexcel GCSE Economics (9-1) specification, so you can revise the exact wording examiners expect to see in your answers.

Use this guide as a vocabulary checklist: read the English definition aloud, cover it, then say the Chinese meaning back. Repeat for three days and these terms will stay in your long-term memory.

1. The Basic Economic Problem |

The basic economic problem arises from scarcity – the fact that human wants are unlimited while the resources available to produce goods and services are limited.

Because of scarcity, societies must answer three key questions: What goods and services should be produced? How should they be produced? For whom should they be produced?

Needs are items essential for survival, such as food, water, and shelter, whereas wants are luxuries that improve quality of life but are not necessary for survival.

2. Factors of Production |

Economists classify the resources used to produce goods and services into four factors of production: Land, Labour, Capital, and Enterprise (remember CELL).

Land includes all natural resources (minerals, water, forests). Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental. Capital refers to man-made goods used to produce other goods, such as machinery and factories. Enterprise is the ability to combine the other factors and take risks to start a business.

Each factor receives a reward: Land earns rent, Labour earns wages, Capital earns interest, and Enterprise earns profit.

3. Opportunity Cost and the Production Possibility Curve |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made. Every decision made by a consumer, firm or government carries an opportunity cost, because resources used for one purpose cannot be used for another.

The production possibility curve (PPC) shows the maximum combination of two goods that an economy can produce with its existing resources and technology. Points on the curve are productively efficient; points inside the curve mean resources are unemployed; points outside are currently unattainable.

A movement along the PPC illustrates opportunity cost, while an outward shift of the whole curve represents economic growth caused by more or better resources.

4. Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium |

Demand is the quantity of a good consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price over a period of time. The law of demand states that, other things being equal, as price falls, quantity demanded rises – this gives a downward-sloping demand curve.

Supply is the quantity producers are willing and able to sell at a given price. The law of supply states that as price rises, quantity supplied rises, producing an upward-sloping supply curve.

Market equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply. At this price there is no shortage and no surplus. A price above equilibrium creates a surplus; a price below equilibrium creates a shortage.

Extension vs increase: a price change causes an extension or contraction along the curve; a change in a non-price factor (income, tastes, population) causes a shift of the whole curve.

5. Price Elasticity of Demand and Supply |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.

PED = %Δ Quantity Demanded ÷ %Δ Price

If PED > 1, demand is elastic – D = 1, demand is unit elastic. The same logic applies to price elasticity of supply (PES).

6. Market Failure and Externalities |

Market failure occurs when the free market allocates resources inefficiently, so the quantity produced or consumed is not socially optimal. The main causes are externalities, public goods, information failure and market power.

An externality is a third-party effect of production or consumption not reflected in the market price. A negative externality (pollution) creates a social cost greater than the private cost, causing over-production. A positive externality (education, vaccination) creates a social benefit greater than the private benefit, causing under-consumption.

Public goods are non-excludable and non-rival, so firms cannot charge for them and the free market under-provides them – for example street lighting and national defence.

Governments correct market failure using taxation, subsidies, regulation, tradable permits and direct provision.

7. Market Structures: Competition and Monopoly |

The term market structure describes how many firms operate in a market, how much market power they hold, and how easy it is for new firms to enter. The two extreme models are perfect competition and monopoly.

In perfect competition there are many small firms selling identical products, with no price-setting power and no barriers to entry. In a pure monopoly, one firm supplies the whole market, has significant price-setting power and high barriers to entry.

Most real markets lie between these extremes and are described as monopolistic competition (many firms, differentiated products) or oligopoly (a few large firms, interdependent decisions).

Concentration ratios measure how much of total market output is controlled by the largest firms and are a common exam data-response question.

8. The Labour Market |

The demand for labour is a derived demand: firms hire workers only because there is demand for the goods and services those workers produce. If product demand falls, labour demand falls too.

The supply of labour depends on the wage rate, the size and skills of the working population, and non-monetary factors such as job satisfaction and working hours.

Human capital refers to the skills, knowledge and experience of workers, improved through education and training. Higher human capital raises productivity and therefore equilibrium wages.

A national minimum wage sets a legal pay floor. If it is set above the equilibrium wage, it may cause employers to demand fewer workers, creating a risk of unemployment.

9. Macroeconomic Objectives |

Governments pursue five main macroeconomic objectives: economic growth, low unemployment, low and stable inflation, a balanced balance of payments, and a fair distribution of income.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total value of goods and services produced in a country in a year. Real GDP adjusts for inflation, while GDP per capita divides total output by population to indicate average living standards.

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). Deflation is a fall in the price level. Unemployment measures the proportion of the labour force who are able and willing to work but cannot find a job.

The balance of payments records a country's transactions with the rest of the world, including the current account (trade in goods and services) and the financial account.

10. Government Macroeconomic Policy |

Fiscal policy uses government spending and taxation to influence aggregate demand. Expansionary fiscal policy cuts taxes or raises spending to boost growth; contractionary fiscal policy does the opposite to reduce inflation.

Monetary policy is controlled by the central bank and uses interest rates, money supply and quantitative easing. Raising interest rates reduces borrowing and spending, which lowers aggregate demand and inflation.

Supply-side policies aim to increase the productive capacity of the economy, for example through education, infrastructure, deregulation and lower business taxes. They shift the long-run aggregate supply curve to the right.

Trade-off: governments often face a short-run conflict between reducing unemployment and controlling inflation, known as the Phillips curve trade-off.

11. International Trade and Globalisation |

International trade allows countries to specialise in producing goods where they have a comparative advantage – the ability to produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another country.

Globalisation is the growing integration of world economies through trade, investment, technology and migration. Benefits include lower prices, wider consumer choice and faster technology transfer; drawbacks include job losses in vulnerable industries and greater exposure to external shocks.

Protectionist measures include tariffs (taxes on imports), quotas (physical limits on imports), subsidies to domestic producers, and non-tariff barriers such as strict product standards.

An exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. A depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports dearer, which tends to improve the current account balance.

12. Exam Technique and Memory Tricks |

Edexcel command words matter as much as definitions. 'Define' needs one precise sentence; 'Explain' needs a point plus a cause-and-effect chain; 'Evaluate' needs both sides plus a justified conclusion.

Common exam traps: confusing 'shift' with 'movement', writing 'demand falls' when you mean 'quantity demanded falls', and forgetting to link every point back to the question's context such as a named market or country.

Finally, build a personal glossary of 80 to 100 terms from past papers. If you can define, illustrate and apply each one, you will comfortably reach the top mark band in Paper 1 and Paper 2.
