📚 Year 10 WJEC Business: Practical Assessment Key Tips | 十年级WJEC商务实践考核要点
The WJEC GCSE Business course includes a practical controlled assessment, typically a business plan that allows you to demonstrate your entrepreneurial skills. This component makes up a significant portion of your final grade and requires you to apply business theory to a realistic scenario. To succeed, you must master research, analysis, financial planning and evaluation, all while presenting your work in a clear, structured manner.
WJEC GCSE
1. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |
The controlled assessment is marked against three Assessment Objectives (AOs). Your work must clearly address each one to secure top marks.
AO1 tests your recall and understanding of business terms, concepts and methods. You need to define key terms such as 'market segmentation' or 'break-even' and show you know how they are used.
AO2 focuses on applying knowledge to the specific business idea you have chosen. Instead of writing generally about marketing, you must explain how you would use social media to promote your bakery or tutoring service.
AO3 demands analysis and evaluation, which carries the heaviest weighting. Here you must interpret data, weigh up options, consider 'what if' scenarios and justify your decisions with reasoned arguments. Ask 'Why might this fail?' and 'Is there a better alternative?' to show critical thinking.
| AO2 | 应用 | Apply theory to a specific scenario | 将理论应用于具体情境 |
Remember: marks are awarded for what you do well across the whole task, so weave analysis and evaluation throughout every section instead of leaving it all for a final paragraph.
2. Choosing a Business Idea |
Your idea forms the foundation of the entire project. Select something realistic, feasible and ideally something you are passionate about or have experience with. A local service or online business often works better than a multinational corporation because you can research it more easily.
Avoid overly complex or vague concepts like 'a tech startup that changes the world'. Instead, consider a small café, a sports coaching service, handmade crafts sold online, or a tutoring enterprise. The examiner wants to see depth, not fantasy.
Check that your idea is not prohibited by your teacher. It must allow you to demonstrate primary and secondary research, costings, pricing strategies, promotion methods and financial forecasts. Brainstorm three possibilities, then do a quick feasibility grid to pick the strongest one.
Feasibility check: Do you understand the market? Can you access customers for primary research? Can you estimate realistic costs? If the answer to any of these is 'no', adjust your idea before you begin writing.
3. Effective Market Research |
Market research provides evidence for every decision in your business plan. You must collect both primary data (questionnaires, interviews, observations) and secondary data (government statistics, competitor websites, industry reports).
Design a short questionnaire with closed questions (giving quantitative data) and a few open questions (for qualitative insights). Ask at least 20 potential customers so your sample is credible. Record the responses and present the findings using charts and graphs, which you can create in Excel or Google Sheets.
For secondary research, visit competitor social media pages, read local business reviews and check industry trends. Cite your sources clearly, as this shows academic rigour. Never make up data; the examiner will spot invented statistics.
Explain how your research findings directly influence your business decisions. For example: '63% of respondents preferred a late afternoon time slot, therefore I will offer coaching sessions from 4pm to 7pm.' This connects research to application and boosts AO2 marks.
4. Identifying Your Target Market |
Clearly define your target market using segmentation variables: age, gender, income, lifestyle, location and buying behaviour. A vague description like 'teenagers' is insufficient. Instead, say 'students aged 14-16 in Cardiff, from households with an income above £30,000, who are health-conscious and regularly buy smoothies'.
Explain why this specific segment is attractive. Maybe it is underserved, growing rapidly or aligns with your skills. Support your reasoning with data from your questionnaires or secondary sources.
Create a customer persona: give your ideal customer a name, a routine and preferences. This helps you visualise how your product fits into their life and makes your plan more convincing.
Avoid the temptation to say 'the target market is everyone'. That signals a lack of focus. Even large companies like Coca-Cola segment their market; your small business must be even more precise.
5. Developing the Marketing Mix |
The marketing mix – product, price, place and promotion – must be tailored to your target market. Describe each element with specific, realistic detail, not just textbook definitions.
Product: Explain features, design, packaging and any unique selling point (USP) that sets you apart. If you sell handmade candles, describe scents, wax type, safety labels and eco-friendly packaging.
Price: Use a pricing strategy such as cost-plus, penetration or competitive pricing. Show your calculations. If you choose penetration pricing to enter the market, explain that you plan to raise prices once you have built a loyal customer base.
Place: Describe where and how customers will buy. Will you operate from home, rent a stall, use an online store or sell through local retailers? Justify your choice based on target market habits.
Promotion: Outline a promotional mix using social media, flyers, local events, loyalty cards or a launch discount. Link each method to a specific objective, such as 'Instagram posts to build brand awareness among 14-18 year olds'.
Balance the 4Ps; don't write five pages on promotion and ignore place. A consistent, well-coordinated mix shows strategic thinking.
6. Financial Planning & Forecasting |
Financial forecasts prove whether your idea is viable. You need to include a list of start-up costs, monthly running costs and revenue projections for at least the first six months.
Start-up costs might include equipment, initial stock, website design, licences and marketing materials. Be specific: 'Espresso machine £450, 200 branded cups £85, domain name £12/year.'
Estimate revenue by multiplying the number of expected customers by the average spend per visit. State your assumptions clearly; for instance, 'Based on questionnaire responses, we expect 15 customers per day in month one, each spending £5.50.'
Calculate whether your business can make a profit by subtracting total costs from total revenue. If it shows a loss initially, explain how long it will take to break even and where you might cut costs.
Include a simple profit and loss forecast table for the first six months. Even a handwritten-style calculation, if accurate, demonstrates solid application skills.
7. Break-even & Cash Flow Analysis |
Break-even analysis shows how many units you must sell to cover all costs. Use the formula:
Break-even point (units) = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price per unit − Variable cost per unit)
Work through an example: If your fixed costs are £600 per month, selling price is £10 and variable cost per unit is £ even = 600 ÷ (10 − 4) = 100 units. Draw a break-even chart to visualise the safety margin.
A cash flow forecast, on the other hand, shows the timing of money coming in and going out. A business may be profitable but still fail if it runs out of cash. List all expected inflows (sales, loans) and outflows (rent, stock, wages) month by month.
Identify months where the closing balance falls below zero. Explain what actions you would take, such as arranging an overdraft, delaying supplier payments or offering a pre-order discount to boost early cash.
Examiners highly value numerical analysis that is explained in words. Always interpret your numbers: 'The break-even of 100 units is achievable because my survey shows local demand of 150 units per month, leaving a comfortable margin of safety.'
8. SWOT Analysis | SWOT分析
A SWOT analysis examines internal Strengths and Weaknesses, and external Opportunities and Threats. It must be specific to your project, not generic. 'Good customer service' is a strength only if you can explain why you will deliver it better than competitors.
| Strengths Home-based: low overheads, strong baking skills, unique family recipes | 优势 在家经营:低开销、精湛烘焙技艺、独特家庭配方 | Weaknesses No retail storefront, limited budget for advertising, sole owner – illness risk | 劣势 无实体店面、广告预算有限、唯一业主——生病有风险 |
After listing each factor, explain how you will build on strengths, address weaknesses, seize opportunities and guard against threats. This turns a static list into a dynamic strategic tool.
Don't just state that a competitor is a threat; analyse their pricing, quality and reputation, then explain how you will differentiate. For instance, 'Threat: supermarket cakes are cheaper. Response: I will emphasise custom-made, all-natural ingredients that supermarkets don't offer.'
9. Risk Assessment & Contingency |
Every business faces risks. Acknowledge them honestly and show you have thought about backups. Common risks include lower-than-expected sales, supplier failure, machinery breakdown or a change in consumer tastes.
Quantify the impact if possible: 'If sales are 30% lower than forecast in month two, revenue will fall by £450, leading to a negative closing cash balance of £120.' Then outline mitigation strategies such as reducing discretionary spending, launching a flash sale or using savings.
Also consider health and safety, legal requirements and insurance. If you are selling food, mention hygiene certificates and allergen labelling. If you offer a service, describe professional indemnity insurance or parental consent forms for minors.
Creating a simple risk matrix with likelihood and severity shows a mature approach. Even if your teacher doesn't require a formal matrix, explaining it in prose elevates your evaluation marks.
10. Evaluating & Reflecting |
Evaluation should appear within every section, not just in a final 'evaluation' paragraph at the end. After every major decision, ask 'What is the next best alternative?' and 'What evidence supports my choice?'
