1. Atomic Structure |
All matter is made of atoms, consisting of a central nucleus containing protons (+1 charge) and neutrons (0 charge), surrounded by electrons (–1 charge) moving in shells. The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons, which defines the element. The mass number (A) is the sum of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons, hence different mass numbers but identical chemical properties.
Electrons occupy specific energy levels or shells: the first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second and third up to 8 electrons each (2,8,8 pattern for the first 20 elements). The electronic configuration determines how the element behaves chemically. For example, sodium (Na) has 2,8,1 and chlorine (Cl) has 2,8,7.
2. The Periodic Table | 周期表
The modern periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Vertical columns are called groups; elements in the same group have the same number of outer shell electrons and similar chemical properties. Horizontal rows are periods; the period number equals the number of occupied electron shells. Metals are on the left, non-metals on the right, with a stepped line separating them.
Key groups: Group 1 (alkali metals) are soft, highly reactive metals with 1 outer electron, forming 1⁺ ions. Group 7 (halogens) are reactive non-metals with 7 outer electrons, forming 1⁻ ions. Group 0 or 8 (noble gases) are unreactive monatomic gases with full outer shells. Trends down groups include increasing reactivity for Group 1 and decreasing reactivity for Group 7.
3. Chemical Bonding and Structure |
Atoms bond to achieve a full outer electron shell, like that of a noble gas. There are three main types of strong chemical bonds: ionic, covalent, and metallic. Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non‑metals, where electrons are transferred to form oppositely charged ions. The electrostatic attraction between these ions holds the giant ionic lattice together. Compounds like sodium chloride (NaCl) have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.
Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non‑metal atoms. Simple molecular substances like H₂O or CO₂ have strong covalent bonds within molecules but weak intermolecular forces, leading to low melting and boiling points. Giant covalent structures (e.g. diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide) are networks of atoms bonded covalently; they have very high melting points. Graphite conducts electricity due to delocalised electrons between its layers.
Metallic bonding exists in metals and alloys. Metal atoms lose their outer electrons to form a 'sea' of delocalised electrons, which are free to move, while positive metal ions are held in a regular lattice. This explains why metals are good conductors of heat and electricity and can be bent or drawn into wires without breaking.
4. Chemical Formulae and Equations |
A chemical formula tells us the number and type of atoms in a substance. For ionic compounds, the formula is the simplest whole‑number ratio of ions that balances the charges (e.g. Mg²⁺ and Cl⁻ give MgCl₂). For covalent molecules, the formula gives the actual number of atoms per molecule. State symbols are used in equations: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous solution.
A balanced chemical equation must have the same number of atoms of each element on both sides; this reflects the conservation of mass. Balancing is done by placing coefficients in front of formulae. Word equations describe the reactants and products using chemical names, while symbol equations show the chemical symbols and states.
5. The Mole Concept (Quantitative Chemistry) |
articles (Avogadro constant). The molar mass (Mᵣ for molecules, Aᵣ for atoms) is the mass of one mole in grams. For elements, the relative atomic mass Aᵣ is the average mass of an atom relative to 1/12th of carbon‑ elative formula mass is the sum of the relative atomic masses of all atoms in the formula.
e and pressure (rtp). The concentration of a solution is often expressed in mol/dm³ or g/dm³. You can use the formula: moles = concentration × volume (dm³).
Using reacting masses, you can calculate the mass of product formed or reactant needed. Steps: write the balanced equation, calculate moles of the known substance, use the mole ratio from the equation, then convert moles back to mass or volume. This is a vital skill for titrations and yield calculations.
6. Electrolysis | 电解
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound using direct electric current. It requires an electrolyte (the molten or dissolved ionic compound) and two electrodes connected to a d.c. power supply. The positive electrode is the anode (attracts anions), and the negative electrode is the cathode (attracts cations). During electrolysis, reduction happens at the cathode (gain of electrons) and oxidation at the anode (loss of electrons).
molten electrolytes, the metal cation is reduced to the metal at the cathode, and the non‑metal anion is oxidised to the non‑ ample, molten lead(II) bromide: Pb²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Pb (at cathode), 2Br⁻ → Br₂ + 2e⁻ (at anode).
In aqueous solutions, water can also be discharged. The products depend on the relative reactivity of the ions and the concentration. At the cathode, if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen, hydrogen gas is produced; at the anode, halide ions are discharged before hydroxide ions (unless the solution is very dilute).
7. Energy Changes in Reactions |
Chemical reactions involve energy changes, usually in the form of heat. Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings, causing a temperature rise. Examples include combustion, neutralisation, and respiration. Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop. Examples include thermal decomposition and photosynthesis.
Energy changes can be shown using energy level diagrams, where exothermic reactions have products at a lower energy than reactants and a negative ΔH, while endothermic reactions have products at a higher energy and a positive ΔH. Activation energy (Eₐ) is the minimum energy needed for a reaction to start.
of a reaction using bond energies: ΔH = total energy required to break bonds in reactants – total energy released when new bonds form in products.
8. Rates of Reaction |
volved, colour change, or pH over time. Collision theory states that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy (≥ activation energy) and the correct orientation.
Factors that increase collision frequency or the proportion of successful collisions increase the rate: increasing concentration (of solutions) or pressure (of gases), increasing surface area (of solids), increasing temperature, and the use of a catalyst. A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, remaining chemically unchanged at the end.
Explaining temperature effect: higher temperature means particles move faster and have greater kinetic energy, so more collisions exceed the activation energy. For surface area, breaking a solid into smaller pieces exposes more particles to react, increasing collision frequency.
9. Acids, Bases and Salts |
roxide. An alkali is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. The pH scale (0– H = 7 neutral, pH > 7 alkaline. Universal indicator or a pH probe is used to determine pH.
tes, a salt, water and carbon dioxide are produced. Titration is a technique used to determine the reacting volumes of acid and alkali precisely, often using a burette and an indicator.
Preparing a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt often involves reacting an acid with an excess insoluble base or carbonate, filtering off the excess, and then crystallising by evaporation. For insoluble salts, precipitation by mixing two solutions containing the required ions is used.
10. Reactivity Series and Extraction of Metals |
The reactivity series lists metals in order of their tendency to form positive ions. Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, (carbon), zinc, iron, (hydrogen), copper, silver, gold. Carbon and hydrogen are included as non‑metals for displacement and extraction reference. More reactive metals displace less reactive metals from their compounds in aqueous solutions or from oxides when heated with carbon.
Extraction method depends on a metal’s position in the series. Metals above carbon (e.g. aluminium) are extracted by electrolysis of their molten ores. Metals below carbon but not very unreactive (e.g. iron, zinc) can be extracted by reduction with carbon. Very unreactive metals such as gold and silver occur native (uncombined). Aluminium is extracted from bauxite (Al₂O₃) using electrolysis with cryolite to lower the melting point.
Rusting of iron requires both oxygen and water. It can be prevented by barrier methods (painting, greasing), sacrificial protection (attaching a more reactive metal like zinc), or galvanising. Corrosion of other metals also follows similar principles based on reactivity.
11. Introduction to Organic Chemistry |
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon‑based compounds. Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with single C–C bonds and the general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. The first four alkanes are methane, ethane, propane and butane. Alkanes are generally unreactive but undergo combustion and substitution with halogens in UV light.
bond, with the general formula CₙH₂ₙ. Ethene (C₂H₄) is the simplest alkene. Alkenes undergo addition reactions, where the double bond opens up to attach atoms. They turn bromine water from orange to colourless, a test for unsaturation. Cracking breaks long‑ into shorter alkanes and alkenes, which are more useful as fuels and chemical feedstocks.
Functional groups give organic compounds characteristic reactions. For Year 10, simple alcohols (e.g. ethanol) and carboxylic acids (e.g. ethanoic acid) may be introduced. Homologous series have the same general formula and similar chemical properties, with each successive member differing by a CH₂ group.
