📚 Year 10 WJEC Biology: A Parent's Guide to Supporting Learning | WJEC
Welcome to this parents' guide for the WJEC GCSE Biology course. Year 10 is the year where students build the foundations of key biological concepts, from cells to entire ecosystems. By understanding what your child is learning and how the course is structured, you can offer more targeted support at home. This guide breaks down the core topics, highlights common pitfalls, and suggests practical ways to help with revision and exam preparation, all aligned with the WJEC specification.
1. Course Overview: What Your Child Will Learn |
The WJEC GCSE Biology qualification is linear, meaning all written examinations are taken at the end of Year 11. In Year 10, students typically cover Unit 1: Cells, Organ Systems and Ecosystems in full, and may begin parts of Unit 2, such as cell division, stem cells and inheritance. Unit 1 makes up 45% of the final qualification and is examined through a Foundation or Higher tier paper. Understanding the scope of these units helps you appreciate how topics connect, rather than seeing them as isolated facts.
WJEC GCSE
Unit 1 covers six main areas: cells and movement across membranes, respiration and the respiratory system, digestion and the digestive system, the circulatory system, plants and photosynthesis, and ecosystems including nutrient cycles. Your child's teacher will also build essential practical skills through specified practical activities, which are assessed within the written papers. The language of biology can feel dense, but encouraging your child to explain concepts to you in simple terms is one of the most effective revision habits.
2. Cell Structure and Microscopy |
A solid grasp of cell structure underpins much of Year 10 biology. Students must be able to compare animal, plant and bacterial cells. An animal cell contains a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. In addition to these, plant cells have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts for photosynthesis. Bacterial cells are much smaller, lack a true nucleus and have a single loop of DNA in the cytoplasm, sometimes with small rings called plasmids.
| Feature | Animal Cell | Plant Cell |

| Nucleus | Present | Present |
| Cytoplasm | Present | Present |
| Cell membrane | Present | Present |
| Mitochondria | Present | Present |
| Ribosomes | Present | Present |
| Cell wall | Absent | Present (cellulose) |
| Chloroplasts | Absent | Present |
| Permanent vacuole | Absent | Present |
ize of image / actual size of specimen. This can be rearranged to find any of the three values. Encourage your child to practise converting between units, especially millimetres, micrometres and nanometres, as mistakes in unit conversion are very common.
Magnification = Image size ÷ Actual size
3. Transport Across Membranes |
Three processes move substances in and out of cells: diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process that requires no energy. Oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and leave cells by diffusion. Osmosis is a special case of diffusion – the movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one.
Active transport requires energy from respiration to move substances against the concentration gradient, from low to high concentration. This is vital in root hair cells absorbing mineral ions from the soil and in the gut absorbing glucose. Students often confuse osmosis with diffusion in general; a helpful tip is to remember that osmosis always involves water and a partially permeable membrane. Simple home experiments, such as observing what happens to potato strips in different sugar solutions, can reinforce these ideas.
4. Enzymes: The Body's Catalysts |
Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein that speed up chemical reactions without being used up. Each enzyme has an active site with a specific shape, which fits a particular substrate – this is called the lock and key hypothesis. If the shape of the active site changes due to high temperature or extreme pH, the enzyme becomes denatured and can no longer catalyse the reaction.
WJEC students need to interpret graphs showing the effect of temperature and pH on enzyme activity. The rate of reaction initially increases with temperature until an optimum is reached (often around 37 °C for human enzymes), then falls steeply as denaturation occurs. Digestive enzymes such as amylase (breaks down starch), protease (breaks down protein) and lipase (breaks down lipids) are key examples. You can support your child by asking them to explain these graphs to you or by using food tests (like the iodine test for starch) to demonstrate enzyme action.
5. The Digestive System |
Digestion is the process of breaking down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. The WJEC course requires knowledge of the main organs and their roles: the mouth (mechanical digestion and salivary amylase), stomach (churning and protease), small intestine (digestion completes, absorption via villi), and large intestine (water absorption). The liver produces bile, stored in the gall bladder, which neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
Villi adaptations are a favourite exam topic. Each villus has a thin wall (one cell thick), a dense network of capillaries, and a lacteal to absorb fatty acids and glycerol. These features create a large surface area and short diffusion distance. A common misconception is that digestion happens entirely in the stomach; remind your child that most chemical digestion occurs in the small intestine. Drawing and labelling a villus diagram together can be an effective revision activity.
6. The Circulatory and Respiratory Systems |
Year 10 students study the structure and function of the heart, blood vessels and blood components. The heart is a double pump: the right side sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the body. The heart has four chambers – atria (upper) and ventricles (lower) – and valves prevent backflow. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; veins return blood under low pressure, with valves to assist flow; capillaries are tiny, thin-walled vessels where exchange occurs.
quation, which must be recalled, is: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy). The balanced symbol equation is another requirement. In the lungs, oxygen moves into the blood by diffusion across the walls of the alveoli. Alveoli are well-suited for gas exchange because they have a large surface area, moist lining, thin walls and a rich blood supply.
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)
7. Photosynthesis and Plants |
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. The balanced equation is a core recall item. Students must also know that photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight. Factors limiting the rate of photosynthesis include light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature; any of these can become the limiting factor.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Plant transport involves xylem and phloem. Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots upwards through the stem to the leaves; the transpiration stream pulls water due to evaporation from stomata. Phloem moves sugars (translocation) from sources to sinks. WJEC expects understanding of how stomata open and close through guard cell action. A simple celery and food colouring experiment can demonstrate xylem transport beautifully and helps visual learners.
8. Ecosystems and Nutrient Cycles |
An ecosystem is a community of organisms interacting with each other and their environment. Students need to build food chains and food webs, showing the transfer of energy from producers to primary, secondary and tertiary consumers. At each trophic level, energy is lost through respiration, movement and undigested material; this explains why food chains rarely exceed four or five levels and why pyramids of biomass are pyramid-shaped.
The WJEC specification focuses on the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. The carbon cycle involves photosynthesis (carbon dioxide removed from the air), respiration, decomposition and combustion (carbon dioxide returned). The nitrogen cycle is often seen as challenging. Key microbes include decomposers that break down protein into ammonium compounds, nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonium to nitrites and then nitrates, and denitrifying bacteria that return nitrogen gas to the atmosphere. Drawing simplified diagrams together can make these cycles far less daunting.
9. Common Challenges and How to Help |
Many Year 10 students find the volume of new vocabulary overwhelming. Words like 'denatured', 'permeable', 'translocation' and 'nitrification' can all start to blur. Create a set of flashcards with the term on one side and a simple definition plus a diagram on the other. When helping, ask your child to define a term in their own words before checking accuracy – this builds confidence and identifies gaps.
