📚 Year 10 WJEC Biology: Complete Syllabus Breakdown | Year 10 WJEC

Year 10 marks the beginning of serious GCSE preparation, and the WJEC Biology specification presents a fascinating journey through the living world. From the microscopic machinery inside cells to the complex interactions within ecosystems, this course builds a solid foundation in life sciences. Understanding the syllabus structure is the first step towards exam success, allowing students to organise their revision effectively and identify connections between different topics. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of every major topic area covered in the Year 10 WJEC Biology curriculum, explaining key concepts, essential terminology, and the practical skills students need to develop.

1. Cells and Microscopy |

All living organisms are composed of cells, the basic structural and functional units of life. The WJEC syllabus requires students to understand the differences between prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, and eukaryotic cells, found in plants, animals, and fungi. Prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, storing their genetic material as a single circular chromosome in the cytoplasm. Eukaryotic cells, by contrast, contain a distinct nucleus housing linear chromosomes and possess various specialised organelles including mitochondria, ribosomes, and in plant cells, chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole.

Microscopy skills form a core practical component of this unit. Students must be able to use a light microscope to observe, draw, and label biological specimens. The magnification formula is fundamental to this work and appears regularly in exam calculations.

Magnification = Image size ÷ Actual size

Students should be comfortable converting between millimetres (mm), micrometres (µm), and nanometres (nm). Remember that 1 mm = 1000 µm and 1 µ des, apply stains such as iodine solution for plant cells or methylene blue for animal cells, and focus the microscope correctly is regularly assessed through practical examinations.

2. Cell Structure and Organelle Functions |

Understanding the relationship between organelle structure and function is essential. The nucleus controls all cellular activities and contains DNA organised into chromosomes. Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration, releasing energy for the cell through the breakdown of glucose. Ribosomes, tiny structures found either freely in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum, carry out protein synthesis using amino acids.

Plant cells possess three additional structures not found in animal cells. The rigid cell wall, composed primarily of cellulose, provides structural support and prevents bursting when water enters by osmosis. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, the green pigment that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis. A large permanent vacuole stores cell sap—a solution of water, dissolved sugars, mineral salts, and other solutes—and helps maintain turgor pressure against the cell wall, keeping herbaceous plants upright.

Organelle 细胞器 Found In 存在于 Function 功能
Nucleus 细胞核 All eukaryotic cells Controls cell activities, stores DNA
Mitochondria 线粒体 All eukaryotic cells Site of aerobic respiration
Ribosomes 核糖体 All cells Protein synthesis
Chloroplasts 叶绿体 Plant cells only Photosynthesis
Cell wall 细胞壁 Plant cells only Structural support, prevents bursting
Plant cells only Stores cell sap, maintains turgor

3. Cell Differentiation and Specialisation |

Multicellular organisms develop from a single fertilised egg cell through repeated rounds of cell division followed by differentiation. Differentiation is the process by which cells become structurally and functionally specialised to perform specific roles within an organism. Initially, embryonic stem cells are undifferentiated and can develop into any cell type, but as development proceeds, most cells become committed to particular functions and lose the ability to divide or change into other cell types.

Several specialised animal cells feature prominently in the WJEC specification. Red blood cells lack a nucleus and mitochondria, maximising space for haemoglobin, the protein that binds oxygen for transport around the body. Their biconcave disc shape creates a large surface area relative to volume, facilitating rapid oxygen diffusion. Sperm cells are streamlined with a long flagellum for swimming and contain numerous mitochondria in the midpiece to provide ATP for movement. The acrosome at the sperm head contains digestive enzymes that break down the outer layers of the egg cell during fertilisation. Nerve cells, or neurons, have elongated axons covered by a myelin sheath that insulates the electrical impulse, and branching dendrites that connect with many other neurons.

In plants, root hair cells are epidermal cells with long, thin extensions that penetrate between soil particles. These extensions dramatically increase surface area for the absorption of water by osmosis and mineral ions by active transport. Xylem vessels are dead, hollow cells arranged end-to-end to form continuous tubes. Their walls are strengthened with lignin, a waterproof substance that prevents collapse and allows the transport of water and dissolved minerals upwards from roots to leaves. Phloem cells are living cells responsible for transporting dissolved sugars and amino acids throughout the plant in a process called translocation.

4. Diffusion, Osmosis, and Active Transport |

Substances move across cell membranes through three main processes, each with distinct characteristics. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down the concentration gradient. This passive process requires no cellular energy and continues until equilibrium is reached. The rate of diffusion increases with higher temperature (particles have more kinetic energy), larger concentration gradients, and greater surface area of the exchange surface. Diffusion distances should be minimised for efficient exchange.

Osmosis is a special case of diffusion involving the movement of water molecules only. Water moves across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water potential (more dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (more concentrated solution). Understanding water potential is critical: pure water has the highest possible water potential, and adding solutes lowers it. Animal cells placed in pure water will swell and may burst because they lack a cell wall—a process called lysis. Plant cells in pure water become turgid, with the cytoplasm pushing firmly against the cell wall, which is the normal healthy state for herbaceous plants. In concentrated solutions, plant cells become plasmolysed as water leaves the vacuole, causing the cytoplasm to shrink away from the cell wall.

Active transport moves substances against the concentration gradient, from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration. This process requires energy from respiration in the form of ATP and involves carrier proteins embedded in the cell membrane. Root hair cells use active transport to absorb mineral ions, such as nitrate and magnesium ions, from soil where their concentration is much lower than inside the cell. This explains why plants require oxygen in the soil for root respiration and why waterlogged or compacted soils lead to mineral deficiencies.

5. Enzymes: Biological Catalysts |

Enzymes are globular proteins that function as biological catalysts, dramatically increasing the rate of metabolic reactions without being consumed or permanently changed. Each enzyme possesses an active site—a specific three-dimensional region with a shape complementary to its substrate molecule. The lock-and-key hypothesis describes how the substrate fits precisely into the active site, forming an enzyme-substrate complex where the reaction occurs. Once the reaction is complete, the products are released and the enzyme is free to catalyse another reaction.

The activity of enzymes is profoundly influenced by both temperature and pH. As temperature increases, enzyme activity rises because substrate and enzyme molecules move faster and collide more frequently. At the optimum temperature—around 37 °C for many human enzymes—activity reaches its maximum. Beyond this point, the weak bonds maintaining the enzyme's tertiary structure begin to break, causing the active site to lose its specific shape. This irreversible process is called denaturation. The same principle applies to pH: each enzyme has an optimum pH, and extremes of acidity or alkalinity cause denaturation. Pepsin, a stomach enzyme, has an optimum pH around 2, while trypsin, found in the small intestine, functions best at approximately pH 8.

Practical investigations into enzyme activity often use catalase from potato or liver tissue breaking down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, or amylase digesting starch. Students should be able to design controlled experiments, identify independent and dependent variables, and plot graphs showing how reaction rate changes with conditions.

6. Respiration and Energy Release |

Respiration is a series of enzyme-controlled reactions that release chemical energy from organic molecules, primarily glucose, to fuel cellular processes. This is not synonymous with breathing; respiration occurs inside every living cell. The energy released is used to synthesise ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the universal energy currency of cells, which powers activities including muscle contraction, active transport, cell division, and maintaining body temperature in endotherms.

Aerobic respiration requires oxygen and produces a large yield of ATP. The balanced symbol equation summarising this process is fundamental knowledge.

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy as ATP)

ed to lactic acid, releasing a small amount of energy. The word equation is straightforward: glucose → lactic acid (+ some energy). Lactic acid accumulation causes muscle fatigue and cramps. After exercise, oxygen is required to oxidise the lactic acid back to carbon dioxide and water or convert it to glucose in the liver— d. This process, glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ some energy), is exploited commercially in brewing and baking industries.

7. The Digestive System and Nutrition |

The human digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble substances that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells. This process involves both mechanical digestion—physically breaking food into smaller pieces through chewing and churning in the stomach—and chemical digestion, which uses enzymes to break specific chemical bonds.

Carbohydrates are broken down by amylase enzymes. Salivary amylase, secreted in the mouth, begins starch digestion, while pancreatic amylase continues this process in the small intestine. The end product, maltose and other disaccharides, are further broken down by enzymes in the small intestine lining into monosaccharides like glucose. Proteases break proteins into amino acids. Pepsin begins protein digestion in the stomach's acidic environment, while trypsin continues in the alkaline conditions of the small intestine. Lipases, working with bile salts from the liver, emulsify and break fats into fatty acids and glycerol.

Villi are finger-like projections lining the small intestine that provide an enormous surface area for efficient absorption of digested food molecules. Each villus contains a dense network of blood capillaries that absorb glucose and amino acids, and a central lacteal, part of the lymphatic system, that absorbs fatty acids and glycerol. The epithelial cells lining the villi have microvilli on their surface, further increasing surface area. These adaptations collectively maximise absorption efficiency.

8. The Circulatory System and Blood |

The circulatory system transports substances around the body, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, and waste products. Humans possess a double circulatory system. The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation), where gas exchange occurs. The left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). This double pump ensures blood pressure is maintained, delivering oxygen and nutrients efficiently to all tissues.

The heart has four chambers: two upper atria that receive blood and two lower ventricles that pump blood out. Valves between the atria and ventricles (atrioventricular valves) and at the entrances to the major arteries (semilunar valves) prevent backflow, ensuring unidirectional blood flow. The heart muscle itself receives oxygenated blood through the coronary arteries; blockages in these vessels can lead to coronary heart disease.

Blood consists of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma transports dissolved substances including carbon dioxide, urea, hormones, and soluble nutrients. Red blood cells transport oxygen bound to haemoglobin. White blood cells, including lymphocytes and phagocytes, defend against pathogens—lymphocytes produce antibodies while phagocytes engulf and digest foreign particles through phagocytosis. Platelets are cell fragments involved in blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding and the entry of microorganisms at wound sites.

9. Plant Transport Systems |

Plants require transport systems to move water, minerals, and products of photosynthesis between roots, stems, and leaves. Xylem tissue transports water and dissolved mineral ions upwards from the roots. The movement of water through xylem is driven primarily by transpiration—the evaporation of water from leaf surfaces. As water molecules evaporate from mesophyll cells into air spaces within the leaf and then diffuse out through stomata, this creates a negative pressure (tension) that pulls water up the xylem in a continuous column. The cohesive property of water molecules, caused by hydrogen bonding, prevents this column from breaking.

The rate of transpiration is influenced by environmental conditions. Higher temperatures increase the rate of evaporation, so more water is lost. Increased air movement (wind) removes the humid layer of air around stomata, maintaining a steep concentration gradient for water vapour diffusion. Higher light intensity causes stomata to open wider, facilitating carbon dioxide entry for photosynthesis but also increasing water loss. Increased humidity reduces the concentration gradient, slowing transpiration.

Phloem tissue transports dissolved sugars (mainly sucrose) and amino acids from sources (where they are produced, like leaves) to sinks (where they are used or stored, like roots, fruits, and developing shoots). This process is called translocation. Unlike xylem transport, which is a passive physical process driven by evaporation, translocation is an active process requiring energy from respiration.

10. Photosynthesis: Capturing Light Energy |

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and algae convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose molecules. This endothermic reaction takes place in chloroplasts, using carbon dioxide and water as raw materials and producing oxygen as a by-product. The balanced symbol equation summarises this transformation.

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ (light energy absorbed by chlorophyll)

The leaf is a photosynthetic organ with multiple adaptations for efficient light capture and gas exchange. A broad, flat lamina provides a large surface area to intercept sunlight. Thin leaves allow short diffusion distances for carbon dioxide entering and oxygen exiting. The palisade mesophyll layer, located just below the upper epidermis, contains densely packed, elongated cells packed with chloroplasts, maximising light absorption. Stomata, mainly on the lower epidermis, allow gas exchange while guard cells control their opening and closing. Spongy mesophyll cells, with their irregular shapes and abundant air spaces, facilitate rapid gas diffusion within the leaf.

The rate of photosynthesis is limited by several factors. At low light intensities, the rate is directly proportional to light availability. As light intensity increases, the rate plateaus when another factor becomes limiting. Similarly, carbon dioxide concentration directly affects the rate at low levels, but at around 0.1%, the rate levels off. Temperature affects the enzyme-controlled reactions of the Calvin cycle. At low temperatures, enzyme activity is slow; at high temperatures, enzymes denature. Experimental investigations often use aquatic plants like Elodea, counting oxygen bubbles produced to measure photosynthetic rate under varying conditions.

11. Ecosystems and Energy Flow |

An ecosystem comprises a community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. The organisms are organised into trophic levels based on their feeding relationships. Producers, typically green plants or algae, occupy the first trophic level, converting light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. Primary consumers (herbivores) feed on producers, secondary consumers feed on primary consumers, and tertiary consumers occupy the highest trophic level. Decomposers, mainly bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the ecosystem for reuse by producers.

Energy enters most ecosystems as sunlight and is transferred between organisms through food chains and food webs. At each trophic level, a significant proportion of energy is lost. Only about 10% of the energy stored in biomass at one level is transferred to the next. The remaining energy is lost through several processes: respiration releases energy as heat; not all parts of an organism are consumed; and some consumed material is indigestible and lost as faeces. This energy loss explains why food chains rarely exceed four or five trophic levels—insufficient energy remains to support viable populations at higher levels.

12. The Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles |

The carbon cycle describes the continuous movement of carbon atoms between the atmosphere, organisms, oceans, and fossil reserves. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is removed by photosynthesis and returned through respiration by plants, animals, and decomposers. Combustion of fossil fuels and biomass also releases carbon dioxide. Decomposers feed on dead organisms and waste products, breaking down complex organic molecules and releasing carbon dioxide through their own respiration. Understanding this cycle is essential for contextualising discussions about climate change and the enhanced greenhouse effect.

The nitrogen cycle is similarly crucial as nitrogen is an essential component of proteins and DNA. Although the atmosphere is approximately 78% nitrogen gas, this form is inert and unavailable to most organisms. Nitrogen fixation converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia or nitrates. Lightning provides enough energy for a small amount of fixation, but most is performed by nitrogen-fixing bacteria, either free-living in soil or living symbiotically in root nodules of leguminous plants like peas and beans. Nitrifying bacteria then convert ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates, the form most easily absorbed by plant roots. Denitrifying bacteria, active in anaerobic soil conditions like waterlogged fields, convert nitrates back into atmospheric nitrogen, effectively removing nitrogen from the ecosystem.

Practical application of these cycles appears in agricultural practices. Crop rotation, where legumes are planted alternately with other crops, naturally replenishes soil nitrates. Waterlogged soil can be drained to prevent denitrification and maintain nitrate availability. Understanding these processes allows students to evaluate the environmental impacts of intensive farming and the use of artificial fertilisers.
