1. States of Matter and Kinetic Theory |
All substances exist as solids, liquids or gases, and their behaviour is explained by kinetic particle theory. In solids, particles vibrate in fixed positions; in liquids, particles move past each other but remain close; in gases, particles move rapidly and are far apart. Changes of state – melting, boiling, freezing and condensation – occur when energy is added or removed, altering the distance and motion of particles. Sublimation and deposition are also possible for substances like iodine and solid carbon dioxide.
The kinetic theory also explains diffusion, the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. Diffusion rates are highest in gases, slower in liquids and negligible in solids. A smaller molecular mass leads to faster diffusion under the same conditions.
2. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |
Atoms are composed of protons (relative charge +1, relative mass 1), neutrons (charge 0, mass 1) and electrons (charge −1, mass 1/1836). The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons and defines the element. The mass number (A) equals the total number of protons plus neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons, hence different mass numbers.
Electrons occupy shells (energy levels): the first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second up to 8, and the third also up to 8 for the first 20 elements. The Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Groups (vertical columns) contain elements with the same number of outer-shell electrons, giving similar chemical properties. Periods (horizontal rows) show trends in properties.
3. Chemical Bonding and Structure |
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals, where electrons are transferred to form cations (positive ions) and anions (negative ions). The oppositely charged ions attract each other strongly in a giant ionic lattice. Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water because the ions are free to move.
Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms. Simple molecular substances (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, CH₄) have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures, such as diamond (each carbon atom forms four covalent bonds) and graphite (layered structure with delocalised electrons between layers), have very high melting points; graphite conducts electricity along the layers.
Metallic bonding features a lattice of positive ions surrounded by a 'sea' of delocalised electrons. This explains electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability and ductility of metals.
4. Formulae and Equations |
Chemical formulae show the symbols of the elements and the ratio of atoms in a compound. The empirical formula gives the simplest whole-number ratio; the molecular formula gives the actual number of atoms in a molecule. You must be able to write and balance chemical equations, ensuring the number of atoms of each element is equal on both sides. State symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq) indicate the physical state.
Ionic equations show only the particles that take part in a reaction. Spectator ions that remain unchanged are omitted. A balanced ionic equation must also be balanced for charge. Example:
Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s)
Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s)
5. The Mole Concept |
rticles (Avogadro constant). The molar mass (Mᵣ) of a substance is the mass of one mole, with units g mol⁻¹. You can calculate the number of moles using:
n = m / Mᵣ
where m is the mass in grams.
n = m / Mᵣ
The concentration of a solution is often expressed in mol dm⁻³:
c = n / V
where V is the volume in dm³. For gases at room temperature and pressure (r.t.p., 25 °C, 1 atm), the molar volume is approximately 24 dm³ mol⁻¹, allowing calculation of gas volumes:V = n × 24 dm³
c = n / V
purity calculations are commonly assessed. Yield = (actual mass / theoretical mass) × 100%; purity = (mass of pure substance / total mass of sample) × 100%.
6. Chemical Energetics |
Exothermic reactions release heat to the surroundings, causing a temperature rise (e.g., combustion, neutralisation). Endothermic reactions absorb heat, causing a temperature drop (e.g., thermal decomposition, photosynthesis). The energy change can be shown on an energy level diagram, where ΔH is negative for exothermic and positive for endothermic reactions.
Bond breaking is an endothermic process because energy must be supplied to overcome attractions; bond making is exothermic because energy is released when bonds form. The overall enthalpy change for a reaction is:
ΔH = Σ(bond energies broken) − Σ(bond energies formed)
A simple calorimetry experiment, such as measuring the temperature change when a fuel burns, allows calculation of energy released per gram or per mole.
7. Acids, Bases and Salts | 酸、碱和盐
An acid is a proton (H⁺) donor. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). A base is a substance that neutralises an acid; an alkali is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity, from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with 7 neutral.
Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to produce a salt and water. For example:
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)
Reactions of acids with metals produce a salt and hydrogen gas; with metal carbonates, a salt, water and carbon dioxide are formed. Soluble salts can be prepared by titration or by reacting an excess of an insoluble base with an acid, followed by filtration and crystallisation.
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)
8. Electrolysis | 电解
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound, either molten or in solution, by passing a direct electric current through it. The electrolyte must contain mobile ions. The cathode (negative electrode) attracts cations, where reduction occurs (gain of electrons). The anode (positive electrode) attracts anions, where oxidation occurs (loss of electrons).
In the electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide, Pb²⁺ ions are reduced at the cathode to form lead metal, and Br⁻ ions are oxidised at the anode to form bromine gas. For aqueous solutions, the reactivity of the metal and the nature of the anion determine the product. At the cathode, hydrogen gas is produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen. At the anode, oxygen is produced from hydroxide ions unless a halide ion is present (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻), which will discharge instead.
Electrolytic processes are used to extract reactive metals such as aluminium from bauxite, to purify copper, and to electroplate objects.
9. Metals and the Reactivity Series |
The reactivity series orders metals by their tendency to lose electrons and form positive ions. Potassium, sodium and calcium are extremely reactive, while gold and platinum are very unreactive. The series can be deduced from reactions with water, dilute acids, and displacement reactions. A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound in solution.
Extraction methods depend on the metal's position in the series. Metals above carbon, such as aluminium, are extracted by electrolysis. Metals below carbon, such as iron and zinc, can be extracted by reduction with carbon or carbon monoxide. Metals at the bottom of the series, like gold, are found native (uncombined).
Rusting of iron requires both oxygen and water. Barrier methods (painting, greasing), sacrificial protection (attaching a more reactive metal such as zinc), and alloying can prevent corrosion.
10. Introduction to Organic Chemistry |
ining only carbon and hydrogen. Alkanes (general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂, saturated) have single C– C₄H₁₀). Alkenes (general formula CₙH₂ₙ, unsaturated) contain at least one C=C double bond.
Alkenes can be identified by the bromine test: bromine water turns from orange-brown to colourless when shaken with an alkene, due to addition across the double bond. Cracking is the thermal decomposition of long-chain alkanes into shorter, more useful alkanes and alkenes, often using a catalyst. Alkenes are used to produce polymers, alcohols and many other chemicals.
Alcohols contain the –OH functional group. Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) can be produced by fermentation of glucose or by hydration of ethene. Carboxylic acids contain the –COOH group; ethanoic acid is a typical example. Esters, formed from alcohols and carboxylic acids, have distinct fruity smells.
