📚 Case Study Practice in Year 9 CAIE Biology |
Case studies are a powerful way to connect classroom biology with real-world situations. In CAIE exams, you are often given a scenario and asked to apply your knowledge. This article presents a series of practical drills covering key Year 9 topics, helping you sharpen your analytical skills and master scientific explanation.
1. Case Study Skills: How to Approach a Scenario |
When you are given a case study, start by scanning the text for key terms and data. Highlight any words that relate to biology concepts you have studied, such as 'photosynthesis', 'enzyme', or 'diffusion'.
Next, identify the question being asked. Are you required to explain a phenomenon, predict an outcome, or evaluate an experiment? Understanding the command word (e.g., 'describe', 'explain', 'suggest') is crucial.
Finally, link the scenario to your biological knowledge. Use appropriate scientific vocabulary and provide logical reasoning. If data is presented as a table or graph, describe the trend and explain the biological reason behind it.
2. Case Study: The Wilting Plant |
A potted geranium plant placed on a sunny windowsill appears limp and wilted during the hottest part of the day, even though the soil is kept well-watered. By late evening, the plant stands upright again. Explain this observation using knowledge of plant transport.
The wilt is due to a temporary imbalance between water loss through transpiration and water uptake by the roots. On a hot day, transpiration rate increases because stomata open to allow gas exchange for photosynthesis, but water evaporates rapidly from leaf surfaces. Even though soil is moist, the rate of water absorption by roots may not keep up with the rate of transpiration, causing cells to lose turgor pressure and the plant to wilt. As evening cools, transpiration slows, and roots catch up, restoring turgidity.
Additionally, in high heat and light, stomata may partially close to reduce water loss, but this also limits CO₂ uptake, temporarily reducing photosynthesis. The recovery at night demonstrates the importance of water balance in maintaining cell turgidity.
3. Case Study: Digestive Drama – Lactose Intolerance |
After drinking a glass of milk, Ravi experiences bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea. He is otherwise healthy. His friend suggests he might be lactose intolerant. Using your knowledge of enzymes and digestion, explain why this happens and how the condition relates to enzyme specificity.
Lactose is a disaccharide sugar found in milk. To be absorbed in the small intestine, it must be broken down into its monosaccharides, glucose and galactose, by the enzyme lactase. Lactase is produced by cells lining the small intestine. In people with lactose intolerance, the production of lactase is reduced or absent. Thus, undigested lactose passes into the large intestine, where bacteria ferment it, producing gas and attracting water, leading to bloating and diarrhoea.
This illustrates enzyme specificity – lactase has an active site that fits lactose but not other sugars. Without the specific enzyme, the substrate cannot be broken down, causing digestive problems.
4. Case Study: The Athlete's Energy Crisis |
A sprinter completes a 100-metre race and immediately feels a burning sensation in her leg muscles and breathes heavily. Explain the metabolic processes occurring in her muscles during and after the race.
During intense short-duration exercise, muscle cells require energy quickly and use anaerobic respiration. Glucose is broken down without oxygen to release energy, but the process produces lactic acid as a waste product. The build-up of lactic acid lowers the pH in muscle cells, causing a temporary burning sensation and muscle fatigue. After the race, the athlete breathes heavily to repay the oxygen debt; oxygen is needed to convert lactic acid back to glucose in the liver and to restore normal ATP production through aerobic respiration. This explains the panting and deep breaths.
Glucose → Lactic acid + Energy (ATP)
