1. States of Matter and the Particle Theory | 物质状态与粒子理论
In solids, particles are tightly packed in a regular arrangement. They vibrate about fixed positions and have strong forces of attraction.
固体中,粒子紧密排列,形成规则结构。它们在固定位置振动,粒子间的引力很强。
Liquids have weaker forces, allowing particles to slide past one another while remaining close together. They take the shape of the lower part of their container.
液体中粒子间作用力较弱,粒子可以相互滑动但仍保持紧密接触。液体会随容器底部形状改变自己的形状。
Gases have almost no forces between particles, which move rapidly in all directions, filling the entire container and exerting pressure on the walls.
气体粒子间几乎无作用力,它们快速向各个方向运动,充满整个容器并对器壁施加压强。
The particle theory also explains changes of state: melting, boiling, condensation, freezing and sublimation. Energy changes overcome or form interparticle attractions.
粒子理论同样解释物态变化:熔化、沸腾、冷凝、凝固和升华。能量变化用于克服或形成粒子间作用力。
2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds | 原子、元素与化合物
An element is a substance made of only one type of atom. Each element is represented by a unique chemical symbol, such as H for hydrogen or Fe for iron.
元素是由同一种原子组成的物质。每种元素有独特的化学符号,如氢用H、铁用Fe表示。
A compound is formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in fixed proportions. The properties of a compound are very different from its constituent elements.
化合物是两种或多种不同元素按固定比例化学结合形成的物质。化合物的性质与其组成元素截然不同。
For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is a white, crystalline solid used as table salt, whereas sodium is a highly reactive metal and chlorine is a toxic green gas.
例如,氯化钠(NaCl)是白色晶体,用作食盐;而钠是高活性金属,氯是有毒的黄绿色气体。
A mixture contains two or more substances not chemically combined. Mixtures can usually be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography.
混合物含有两种或多种未化学结合的物质。混合物通常可用过滤、蒸馏或色谱等物理方法分离。
3. Atomic Structure and Electronic Configuration | 原子结构与电子排布
An atom consists of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells (energy levels).
原子由中心的原子核(含质子和中子)和核外排布在电子层(能级)上的电子组成。
Protons carry a positive charge (+1), neutrons are neutral (0), and electrons carry a negative charge (–1). The nucleus is extremely small but contains most of the mass.
质子带正电荷(+1),中子不带电(0),电子带负电荷(–1)。原子核极小却几乎集中了所有质量。
The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons and defines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals Z.
原子序数(Z)等于质子数,决定了元素种类。质量数(A)是质子数与中子数之和。中性原子中,电子数等于Z。
