📚 Year 10 OCR Statistics: Interdisciplinary Problem-Solving Practice | Year 10 OCR
In Year 10, OCR Statistics students are expected to apply statistical concepts to real-world problems that cross traditional subject boundaries. This article provides a structured approach to tackling interdisciplinary questions, blending data handling, probability and statistical analysis with contexts from biology, geography, business and sport. You will learn how to identify suitable statistical methods, interpret results accurately, and communicate your findings clearly in the language the examiner expects.
1. What Makes an OCR Question "Interdisciplinary"?
An interdisciplinary question is not a harder calculation - it is a familiar calculation wrapped in an unfamiliar story. OCR sets questions in which the data comes from science, geography, business or sport, and the marks are awarded for choosing the right statistic, applying it correctly, and then writing a conclusion that uses the context of the question. Typical contexts include reaction temperatures and enzyme activity in biology, rainfall and river discharge in geography, sales figures and price indices in business, and race times or player heights in sport.
The key skill is translation. Before touching your calculator, convert the story into statistical language: What is the variable? Is it discrete or continuous? How many variables are there? Are we comparing groups, testing a claim, or looking for a relationship? Only after this translation should you reach for a formula.
2. Data Handling in Science Experiments: Mean, Spread and Outliers |
Science contexts are the most common source of raw data in OCR Statistics. Consider a chemistry investigation in which a student measures the temperature change of a reaction five times and records 6.2 °C, 6.5 °C, 6.1 °C, 7.0 °C and 6.3 °C. To summarise the data, first calculate the mean.
(6.2 + 6.5 + 6.1 + 7.0 + 6.3) ÷ 5 = 6.42 °C
ows low variability, but the value 7.0 °C might still be an outlier. Because the range depends only on the two most extreme values, it is a weak measure of spread for small samples. The interquartile range (IQR) helps you decide whether the suspicious value really is unusual.
lf (6.1, 6.2) gives Q₁ = 6.15 °C, and taking the upper half (6.5, 7.0) gives Q₃ = 6.75 °C.
IQR = Q₃ - Q₁ = 6.75 - 6.15 = 0.6 °C
the upper boundary is 6.75 + 0.9 = 7.65 °C. The value 7.0 °C sits inside these fences, so it is not an outlier and the result is reliable.
3. Applying the 1.5 × IQR Rule in Practice | 1.5 × IQR
k in GCSE-level work because it is resistant to extreme values. It is worth writing the comparison explicitly in an exam, because the method marks are awarded for the boundary calculation, not for the final yes-or-no answer.
- Step 1: order the data from smallest to largest. /
- Step 2: find the median, then Q₁ and Q₃.
- Step 3: calculate IQR = Q₃ - Q₁, then 1.5 × IQR.
- Step 4: compare the suspect value with the fences and state a conclusion in context. /
A second rule that appears in more advanced work is the z-score rule, where the standardised value is found by subtracting the mean and dividing by the standard deviation.
z = (x - x̄) ÷ s
Values with |z| almost always the expected method. Always state the rule you are using before you use it.
4. Standard Deviation and Comparing Two Groups |
Comparing your data with another group's results usually requires the standard deviation, because it uses every value rather than only the quartiles. For the temperature data above, the sample standard deviation is approximately 0.37 °C, calculated with the formula below.
s = √( Σ(x - x̄)² ÷ (n - 1) )
Using n - 1 in the denominator gives the sample standard deviation, which is what you need when your data is a sample drawn from a larger population. Dividing by n instead gives the population standard deviation and will always produce a slightly smaller answer, so read the question carefully.
When comparing two groups, a good answer always does three things: compare the means to describe the typical value, compare the standard deviations to describe the consistency, and then write a sentence that links both comparisons back to the context.
- Higher mean: on average, larger values. /
- Lower standard deviation: more consistent, more reliable results. /
- Both together: the stronger group is not always the one with the bigger mean. /
5. Probability Models in Genetics and Health Contexts |
Biology-based probability questions usually give you independent events. If two events A and B are independent, then the multiplication rule applies and you can combine probabilities directly.
P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B)
For events that are not independent, you need conditional probability: P(A | B) means the probability of A given that B has already happened. Tree diagrams are the fastest way to organise these questions, and they force you to multiply along branches and add between branches.
When a question asks for the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, use the binomial model. The probability of exactly r successes in n trials is given below, where p is the probability of success in a single trial.
P(X = r) = ⁿCᵣ × pʳ × (1 - p)ⁿ⁻ʳ
Always check the assumptions before using this model: a fixed number of trials, two possible outcomes, a constant probability, and independence between trials. If any of these fails, say so - examiners award marks for justifying the model, not just for using it.
6. Geography and Environmental Data: Sampling, Correlation and Trend Lines |
Geography questions often start with how the data was collected, so sampling method matters. Random sampling removes personal bias, systematic sampling takes every k-th item along a transect, stratified sampling keeps the proportions of subgroups correct, and quota sampling fills fixed numbers from each group. Be ready to state one advantage and one disadvantage of whichever method the question describes.
Once the data is in a scatter diagram, the next step is to describe the relationship: is it positive or negative, strong or weak, and roughly linear? The product moment correlation coefficient r measures the strength of a linear relationship.
r = Σ((x - x̄)(y - ȳ)) ÷ √( Σ(x - x̄)² × Σ(y - ȳ)² )
For ranked or ordinal data, use Spearman's rank correlation coefficient instead. Both coefficients lie between -1 and +1, and the sign tells you the direction of the relationship.
rₛ = 1 - (6 × Σd²) ÷ (n(n² - 1))
A trend line can be used to predict values inside the range of the data, but extrapolating far beyond the observed values is risky and should be described as unreliable. Correlation never proves causation, and a well-written answer always says so in context.
7. Business, Sport and Real-World Rates |
Business questions reward accuracy with money and percentages. Index numbers compare a value with a base year, and weighted means let you combine values that do not carry equal importance.
Index = (value in given year ÷ value in base year) × 100
x̄ = Σwx ÷ Σw
In sport, the same statistics appear as rate per 1000, percentage change, or a standardised score that shows how far a performance sits above or below the mean. When you convert units, write the conversion factor down; unit errors are among the most common lost marks in these questions.
8. Choosing the Right Statistical Method |
Most lost marks in interdisciplinary papers come from choosing the wrong method rather than from arithmetic. Use the decision table below to move from the wording of the question to the correct tool.
| "typical value", "on average" / "典型值""平均" | Mean, median or mode, with justification / 平均数、中位数或众数,并说明理由 |
| "consistent", "reliable", "spread out" / "一致""可靠""分散" | Range, IQR or standard deviation / 极差、IQR 或标准差 |
| "relationship between two variables" / "两个变量之间的关系" | Scatter diagram, r or rₛ, trend line / 散点图、r 或 rₛ、趋势线 |
If two methods look plausible, choose the one that produces a value you can interpret in the context of the question. A result you cannot explain is usually the wrong result.
9. Interpreting Results and Writing Conclusions |
Interpretation is where the highest-value marks sit. A strong conclusion follows a predictable shape: state the calculated value with its units, compare it with the other group or with the claim, and then finish with a sentence that uses the context word from the question.
