📚 A Quick Guide to Art Vocabulary Terms |
Being able to describe what you see in an artwork is just as important as the skill of creating one. In Year 9 Cambridge Art, learning the correct vocabulary helps you analyse, discuss, and write about art with confidence. This guide covers the essential terms you need to know, presented in clear pairs of English and Chinese explanations so you can memorise them quickly and effectively.
1. Line | 线条
A line is a continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point. It can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines can be straight, curved, zigzag, or wavy. In art, lines are used to define shapes, create textures, and suggest movement. For example, a horizontal line often feels calm, while a diagonal line creates tension.
In drawing and painting, artists can use contour lines to outline the edges of a form, or gesture lines to capture the energy of a pose. The thickness of a line can also convey mood: thick, dark lines may feel heavy or aggressive; thin, light lines can seem delicate.
2. Shape | 形状
A shape is a flat, enclosed area created when a line meets itself, or when an area is filled with colour or tone. Shapes are two-dimensional, having only height and width. They can be geometric, like circles, squares, and triangles, or organic, like the irregular forms found in nature.
Artists use shapes to build compositions. Positive shapes refer to the main subjects of an artwork, while negative shapes are the spaces around and between those subjects. Recognising negative space can help you see the overall balance of a piece.
3. Form | 形体
Form refers to a three-dimensional object that has height, width, and depth. In two-dimensional art, artists create the illusion of form through shading, perspective, and modelling. Forms can be geometric, such as a cube or sphere, or organic, like the human body or a rock.
Sculpture deals directly with real form, while drawing and painting simulate it on a flat surface. Understanding form is key to making objects appear solid and believable.
4. Colour | 色彩
Colour is produced when light reflects off a surface and enters the eye. The three properties of colour are hue (the name of the colour, such as red), value (lightness or darkness), and intensity (brightness or dullness). The colour wheel organises hues, showing primary, secondary, and tertiary colours.
Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) advance in a composition and can evoke energy or warmth. Cool colours (blue, green, purple) recede and suggest calm or sadness. Complementary colours, opposite each other on the wheel, create strong contrast when placed side by side.
5. Texture | 肌理
Texture is the surface quality of an object, perceived through touch or the illusion of touch. Actual texture is the real roughness or smoothness of a material, like thick impasto paint or a smooth marble sculpture. Visual texture is the imitation of texture on a flat surface, created with marks, lines, and shading.
Artists use texture to add interest and realism to their work. In a drawing, cross-hatching can create the look of rough bark, while smooth blending might suggest polished metal.
6. Space | 空间
Space is the area around, between, or within components of an artwork. In two-dimensional art, artists create the illusion of depth using perspective, overlapping, size variation, and placement on the picture plane. Positive space is occupied by the subject, while negative space is the empty area that defines the subject.
Linear perspective uses vanishing points and converging lines to suggest depth. Atmospheric perspective makes distant objects appear lighter, bluer, and less detailed, mimicking how the atmosphere affects our vision.
7. Value / Tone |
Value, also called tone, refers to how light or dark a colour or area is. A high-value area is light, close to white; a low-value area is dark, close to black. By changing values, artists can model forms, create depth, and set the mood of a work. Chiaroscuro is the strong contrast between light and dark to create drama.
A value scale is a gradual progression from white to black with steps of grey in between. Practising value scales helps artists control shading and achieve realistic volume.
8. Composition | 构图
Composition is the arrangement of elements such as line, shape, colour, and texture within a work of art. A strong composition leads the viewer's eye through the piece, often using principles like balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
The rule of thirds is a common compositional guideline: dividing the picture plane into nine equal parts and placing key elements along the lines or intersections creates a more dynamic and balanced image. Symmetrical balance gives a formal, calm feeling; asymmetrical balance feels more casual and energetic.
9. Perspective | 透视
Perspective is a system for representing three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. The two main types are linear perspective, which uses converging lines to a vanishing point on the horizon, and atmospheric perspective, which relies on changes in colour and clarity to indicate distance.
In one-point perspective, all receding parallel lines meet at a single vanishing point on the horizon. In two-point perspective, lines converge to two vanishing points on the horizon, often used for drawing buildings at an angle. Foreshortening is a technique where an object appears shorter than it really is due to its angle to the viewer.
10. Proportion | 比例
Proportion refers to the size relationship between different parts of an object or between elements in a composition. In figure drawing, accurate proportion is essential to make the human body look believable. The classical ideal often used the head as a unit of measurement, with an average adult body being about seven to eight heads tall.
Artists may deliberately distort proportion to create emphasis, emotion, or a particular style. For example, caricatures exaggerate certain features for comic effect, while in religious art, central figures might be shown larger to indicate their importance.
11. Contrast | 对比
Contrast is the difference between elements in an artwork, such as light and dark, rough and smooth, or complementary colours. High contrast brings energy and drama; low contrast creates subtlety and calm. Contrast helps to define focal points and guide the viewer's attention.
Value contrast is one of the most powerful tools: placing a light shape against a dark background makes it stand out immediately. Texture contrast can be used to separate a smooth object from a rough surrounding, heightening realism or abstract interest.
12. Medium / Media |
Medium refers to the materials and tools an artist uses to create a work, such as pencil, watercolour, oil paint, clay, or digital software. The plural is media. Each medium has its own characteristics and techniques, influencing the final look and feel of the artwork.
For instance, watercolour is transparent and luminous, often built up in thin washes, while oil paint is opaque, slow-drying, and allows rich blending and texture. Exploring different media is a key part of Year 9 art practice, helping you discover your preferences.
