1. What Will You Learn in Year 10 OCR Biology? | Year 10 OCR
OCR Gateway GCSE Biology A is divided into several topics, many of which are introduced in Year 10. You will explore the building blocks of life in topic B1 (Cell level systems), then move on to scaling up—learning how substances move and how organs like the heart function—in topic B2 (Scaling up). Later in the year, you may start B3 (Organism level systems), covering the nervous and endocrine systems, and B4 (Community level systems), which deals with ecosystems.
2. Cell Structure and Organelles |
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. You need to recognise the differences between animal and plant cells. Animal cells contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. Plant cells have all of these plus a rigid cell wall, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts, which capture light energy for photosynthesis.
Memorising the functions of organelles is essential. For example, the nucleus contains genetic material (DNA) and controls cell activities. Mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration, releasing energy for the cell. Ribosomes are where proteins are synthesised.
|---|---|
| Nucleus (细胞核) | Contains DNA; controls cell activities (含有DNA,控制细胞活动) |
| Mitochondria (线粒体) | Site of aerobic respiration, releases energy (有氧呼吸场所,释放能量) |
| Ribosomes (核糖体) | Protein synthesis (蛋白质合成) |
| Chloroplasts (叶绿体) | Absorb light energy for photosynthesis (吸收光能进行光合作用) |
| Cell wall (细胞壁) | Provides structural support (提供结构支撑) |
| Permanent vacuole (永久大液泡) | Contains cell sap, maintains turgor pressure (含细胞液,维持膨压) |
3. Microscopy and Magnification |
Being able to use a light microscope correctly and calculate magnification is a key practical skill. The magnification formula is central to many exam questions. Always show your working and ensure you convert units where necessary.
Magnification = Image size ÷ Actual size
ion is 20 ÷ 0.2 = 100×. Remember that 1 mm = 1000 μm, so 0.2 mm = 200 μm, giving 20 000 μm ÷ 200 μm = 100×.
4. Cell Transport: Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport |
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It does not require energy and is how oxygen and carbon dioxide move into and out of cells.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. It is vital for maintaining turgor in plant cells.
Active transport moves substances against the concentration gradient, from low to high concentration, using energy released from respiration. An example is the uptake of mineral ions by root hair cells.
5. Enzymes – Biological Catalysts |
Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions without being used up. They have a specific active site that is complementary to a specific substrate—this is known as the lock-and-key hypothesis. Once the substrate enters the active site, the reaction occurs and products are released.
Enzyme activity is affected by temperature and pH. Each enzyme has an optimum temperature (around 37 °C for many human enzymes) and an optimum pH. If conditions become too extreme, the enzyme will denature—its active site changes shape and the substrate can no longer fit.
You will investigate how temperature affects the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction, often using amylase to break down starch. The rate can be measured by the time it takes for the starch to disappear, detected with iodine solution.
6. The Human Digestive System |
Digestion breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. It involves both mechanical digestion (chewing, churning) and chemical digestion (enzymes). Key organs include the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and accessory organs such as the liver and pancreas.
The main digestive enzymes and their roles are shown below. Bile, produced by the liver, helps by neutralising stomach acid and emulsifying fats, increasing the surface area for lipase action.
| Enzyme (酶) | Site of production (产生部位) | Substrate (底物) | Products (产物) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amylase (淀粉酶) | Salivary glands, pancreas (唾液腺、胰腺) | Starch (淀粉) | Maltose (麦芽糖) |
| Protease (蛋白酶) | Stomach, pancreas (胃、胰腺) | Protein (蛋白质) | Amino acids (氨基酸) |
| Lipase (脂肪酶) | Pancreas (胰腺) | Lipids (fats) (脂质/脂肪) | Fatty acids and glycerol (脂肪酸和甘油) |
7. The Circulatory System and Blood |
The heart is a double pump. The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation), while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). The muscular walls of the ventricles are thicker than those of the atria, and the left ventricle has the thickest wall to generate enough pressure for the whole body.
Blood vessels include arteries (carry blood away from the heart, thick muscular walls, high pressure), veins (carry blood toward the heart, thinner walls, contain valves), and capillaries (narrow, one-cell-thick walls for efficient diffusion).
