📚 History Formula & Theorem Quick Reference |
History may not have mathematical equations, but the skills historians use every day can be turned into powerful 'formulas' to help you analyse, interpret and remember. This quick-reference handbook gathers the essential thinking tools, source analysis recipes and chronological shortcuts you will need in Year 9 Cambridge History. Treat each formula as a checklist that turns complex historical puzzles into step-by-step routines.
1. The OPVL Source Formula | OPVL
Every time you examine a primary or secondary source, apply the OPVL formula to unlock its value. The four letters stand for Origin, Purpose, Value and Limitation – the building blocks of source analysis in the Cambridge History curriculum.
Origin asks who created the source, when and where. A diary entry written by a WWI soldier in the trenches carries different weight from a 21st-century textbook summary.
Purpose investigates why the source was made – to inform, persuade, entertain or justify. A propaganda poster aims to manipulate emotions; a census record aims to count facts.
Value measures what the source can reliably tell you about a topic. Even a biased speech has value because it reveals the speaker's mindset.
Limitation identifies what the source cannot tell you – missing voices, factual errors, or the narrow viewpoint of a single person. No source is perfect.
2. The Causation Equation |
= (Long-term Cause × Trigger) + Context. This reminds you never to blame a single factor.
Long-term causes build pressure over decades or centuries – nationalism, economic decline, social inequality. Triggers are the immediate sparks that light the fuse – an assassination, a bad harvest, a sudden crisis.
Context is the environmental frame. The same cause in a democracy and a dictatorship can produce completely different outcomes. Always plug the causes back into their time and place.
3. The Change & Continuity Theorem |
istory = Change + Continuity, and Rate of Change = (New Condition − Old Condition) ÷ Time.
Change can be political (a revolution), economic (industrialisation), social (women gaining the vote) or cultural (the spread of printing). Rate matters: rapid change often feels more threatening than slow evolution.
Continuity is equally important. Even after the Norman Conquest, most Anglo-Saxon villagers continued farming the same land. Identifying continuity helps you spot what truly mattered in people's daily lives.
4. The Significance Formula |
Why do we remember certain events and forget others? Historians gauge significance using three variables: Impact, Reach and Duration. Multiply them together mentally to decide if an event is 'turning-point grade'.
Impact: how deeply did the event affect people's lives? The Black Death had massive impact, killing up to half of Europe's population. Reach: how many people or regions were affected – a village, a nation, a continent? Duration: did the consequences last for years, decades or centuries?
A high-impact, wide-reach, long-duration event like the Industrial Revolution scores maximum significance. A local skirmish with no long-term effect scores low. This formula keeps your essays focused on real historical weight.
5. The Chronology Conversion Kit |
Chronology confuses many students, but a few fixed formulas clear it up. The 19th century runs from 1801 to 1900; the 1st century CE runs from AD 1 to AD 100. Always remember there is no Year 0: 1 BC is followed by AD 1.
ls only for years that are exact multiples of 100, which belong to the century they complete: 1900 is the 19th century.
BC centuries work backwards: 44 BC is in the 1st century BC. The larger the BC number, the longer ago it is. Keep a timeline miniature in your revision notes to visualise overlap.
6. Key Date Snapshots for Year 9 | Year 9 关键年代速查
Certain anchor dates help you navigate the medieval and early modern world that Cambridge Year 9 often explores. Lock these into memory as pillars on which to hang longer stories.
|---|---|---|
| 1066 | Battle of Hastings | Norman control of England |
| 1215 | Magna Carta | King's power limited by law |
| 1348 | Black Death arrives in England | Mass death, labour shortage |
| 1381 | Peasants' Revolt | Challenge to feudal system |
| 1453 | Fall of Constantinople | End of Byzantine Empire, Renaissance stimulus |
| 1492 | Columbus reaches the Americas | Start of European overseas empires |
7. The Bias Detection Algorithm |
Bias = Perspective + Omission + Language. Run every source through this three-part check.
Perspective asks whose eyes we are seeing through. A king, a monk, a female merchant and a child labourer will each describe the same event differently. Omission notes what the source leaves out – perhaps deliberately to hide an embarrassing defeat or unfair tax.
Language is often the giveaway. Sweeping phrases like 'barbarians', 'glorious victory' or 'necessary punishment' signal a deliberate slant. Underline emotive adjectives and then rewrite the sentence neutrally; the gap reveals the bias.
8. The Interpretation Theorem |
No single 'true' version of history exists. The Interpretation Theorem states that every historical account is shaped by the historian's own context, purpose and available evidence. Two historians examining the same files can reach opposite conclusions.
When reading two interpretations of the same event, ask: What evidence does each historian select? Who funded the research? Was the study written immediately after the event or long afterwards, when archives were newly opened?
Your task in Year 9 is not to declare one interpretation 'correct' o , but to explain why they differ. Use the formula: Interpretation = Selected Evidence + Historian's Viewpoint + Time Period. This will sharpen any essay on why historians disagree.
9. The PEE Paragraph Formula | PEE
In Cambridge History essays, structured paragraphs earn marks. The PEE formula – Point, Evidence, Explanation – turns a rambling answer into a tight argument. Treat it like a three-step engine.
Point: open with a clear claim that answers the question directly, e.g. 'The Treaty of Versailles created lasting resentment in Germany.' Evidence: drop in a specific fact, quote, statistic or named source to back the claim.
Explanation: the most valuable step. Explain how your evidence proves the point and link it back to the question. Explain the mechanism – 'Because the treaty took away 13% of German territory and imposed huge reparations, ordinary Germans felt humiliated, which made it easier for extremist parties to gain support.'
For extra sophistication, add a second E for 'Evaluation': weigh the evidence, note its limitations or compare it with another source. This pushes your answer towards the highest band on the mark scheme.
10. The Memory Palace for Dates |
ula uses image, story and emotion: Date = Visual Anchor + Story Chain + Personal Reaction.
Turn 1066 into an image: a Norman knight with arrows (Hastings) kicking a crown labelled '1066'. For 1348, picture a rat sneezing 'Black Death' onto a half-empty medieval village. The brain retains bizarre, colourful pictures far better than numbers alone.
Link images into a story: after the knight conquers England (1066), the angry barons force King John to sign Magna Carta (1215), then a sick rat appears and shakes society (1348), and finally angry peasants march on London (1381). Recite the story aloud and the dates stick.
Add personal reaction: how would you feel smelling the Great Stink of 1858 or watching the first train speed past in 1830? Emotion cements memory. These formulas transform raw dates into a mental timeline you can walk through in the exam hall.
