1. What is Organic Chemistry? |
Organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies compounds containing carbon, with a few exceptions such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbonates and hydrogencarbonates. Carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds, allowing them to link together in chains and rings, producing an enormous variety of molecules.
Most organic compounds also contain hydrogen, and many contain other elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, and the halogens. The key idea is that the chemistry of organic compounds is determined by the functional groups they contain.
2. Hydrocarbons: Alkanes and Alkenes |
Hydrocarbons are compounds made of carbon and hydrogen only. The two main types studied at IGCSE are alkanes and alkenes. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons, meaning they contain only single covalent bonds between carbon atoms. Their general formula is CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. Methane (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈) and butane (C₄H₁₀) are the first four members of the homologous series.
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least one carbon– ral formula is CₙH₂ₙ. The simplest alkene is ethene (C₂H₄), followed by propene (C₃H₆). The double bond is the functional group that gives alkenes their characteristic reactivity.
3. Homologous Series | 同系列
A homologous series is a family of organic compounds with the same general formula, similar chemical properties, and a gradual change in physical properties (such as boiling point) as the chain length increases. Each successive member differs by a –CH₂– unit.
Examples of homologous series include alkanes, alkenes, alcohols (e.g., CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH), carboxylic acids (e.g., CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH), and esters. Recognising the series helps you predict the formula, name and reactions of less familiar members.
4. Naming Organic Compounds |
The IUPAC naming system uses a prefix to indicate the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain: meth- (1), eth- (2), prop- (3), but- (4), pent- (5), hex- (6). The suffix or secondary suffix tells you the homologous series: "-ane" for alkanes, "-ene" for alkenes, "-anol" for alcohols, "-anoic acid" for carboxylic acids.
For example, a three-carbon alkane is propane; a two-carbon alkene is ethene; a four-carbon alcohol is butanol. Numbers are used to indicate the position of double bonds or functional groups when necessary, e.g., propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol.
5. Functional Groups | 官能团
A functional group is an atom or group of atoms that gives a homologous series its characteristic chemical reactions. The key functional groups for IGCSE are:
| Homologous Series | Functional Group | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Alkanes | C–C single bond (no specific reactive group) | Ethane, C₂H₆ |
| Alkenes | C=C double bond | Ethene, C₂H₄ |
| Alcohols | –OH (hydroxyl group) | Ethanol, C₂H₅OH |
| Carboxylic acids | –COOH (carboxyl group) | Ethanoic acid, CH₃COOH |
| Esters | –COO– (ester linkage) | Ethyl ethanoate, CH₃COOCH₂CH₃ |
Memorising these functional groups is essential because they determine the outcomes of addition, combustion, oxidation and esterification reactions.
6. Reactions of Alkanes |
Alkanes are fairly unreactive because the C–C and C–H bonds are strong and non-polar. Their main reactions are combustion and substitution with halogens.
Complete combustion occurs when alkanes burn in plenty of oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water. For example, the combustion of methane is:
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
Incomplete combustion occurs when the oxygen supply is limited, producing carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) or carbon (soot). This is why gas appliances must be well-ventilated.
where a hydrogen atom is replaced by a halogen atom. For example: CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl.
7. Reactions of Alkenes |
rgo addition reactions, in which the double bond opens up and atoms attach to the carbons.
The four main addition reactions you need to know are:
en (H₂) with a nickel catalyst to form the corresponding alkane. Example: C₂H₄ + H₂ → C₂H₆
rom orange to colourless. This is the test for unsaturation. Example: C₂H₄ + Br₂ → C₂H₄Br₂
例如:C₂H₄ + Br₂ → C₂H₄Br₂
(H₂O) with a phosphoric acid catalyst to produce an alcohol. Example: C₂H₄ + H₂O → C₂H₅OH
例如:C₂H₄ + H₂O → C₂H₅OH
g chain polymer. The double bond opens and the monomers link, e.g., ethene → poly(ethene).
8. Alcohols and Their Reactions |
Alcohols contain the hydroxyl (–OH) functional group. The general formula for monohydric alcohols is CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH. Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) is the most important example, used as a solvent, fuel, and in alcoholic drinks.
Ethanol can be produced by fermentation of sugars using yeast at around 30– vely, it can be manufactured industrially by the catalytic hydration of ethene with steam.
Key reactions of alcohols include: combustion (burning to produce CO₂ and H₂O), oxidation to carboxylic acids, and reaction with carboxylic acids to form esters. Alcohols can be oxidised by heating with an oxidising agent such as acidified potassium dichromate(VI), turning it from orange to green.
9. Carboxylic Acids |
Carboxylic acids contain the carboxyl functional group (–COOH). Their general formula is CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH. They are weak acids, meaning they only partially ionise in aqueous solution. Ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH) is the acid found in vinegar.
Carboxylic acids react with metals, bases and carbonates to form salts, in typical acid fashion, though more slowly than strong mineral acids. For example, ethanoic acid reacts with sodium carbonate to produce sodium ethanoate, carbon dioxide and water.
A vital reaction for IGCSE is esterification: a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol in the presence of a concentrated sulfuric acid catalyst (which acts as a dehydrating agent) to produce an ester and water. This is a reversible condensation reaction.
10. Esters – Formation and Uses |
Esters are formed when a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol. The ester functional group is –COO–. Esters are named with the alcohol part first (as an alkyl group) followed by the acid part (as an "-anoate"), e.g., ethyl ethanoate from ethanol and ethanoic acid.
CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ⇌ CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O
Esters are volatile compounds with pleasant, fruity smells. They are commonly used as flavourings in foods and as solvents in perfumes, glues and nail varnish removers. Small esters are also good solvents for organic compounds.
11. Addition Polymerisation |
Addition polymerisation is the process in which many small unsaturated monomer molecules (usually alkenes) join together to form a long chain polymer. The reaction requires high pressure and a catalyst in industry. The double bond opens up, allowing monomers to link together through single bonds.
For example, poly(ethene) (polythene) is made from ethene monomers. The repeating unit is –CH₂–CH₂–. Poly(propene) is made from propene, giving –CH(CH₃)–CH₂– as the repeating unit. These polymers are widely used for plastic bags, bottles, and containers.
聚丙烯 (poly(propene)) 由丙烯制得,重复单元为 –CH(CH₃)–CH₂–。
You should be able to draw the structure of a polymer from a given monomer, and deduce the monomer from a section of the polymer chain. Polymerisation is an addition reaction, so no other products are formed.
12. Key Experimental Tests and Tips |
The bromine water test is the principal way to distinguish between alkanes and alkenes. When a few drops of orange bromine water are added to an alkene, it rapidly decolourises. Alkanes do not react in the dark, so the orange colour persists.
To test for the presence of an alcohol (specifically ethanol), you can warm the sample with acidified potassium dichromate(VI) solution; the colour change from orange to green indicates oxidation has occurred. For carboxylic acids, a simple fizzing test with sodium carbonate (producing CO₂) can indicate an acid, but remember that mineral acids also give this result.
When drawing organic structures, always show all atoms and bonds clearly, and never miss the hydrogen atoms. Practise naming molecules both ways – from name to structure and structure to name – to gain confidence for the exam.
