1. Semiotics | 符号学
Semiotics, developed by Roland Barthes, is the study of signs and how they create meaning. A sign consists of a signifier (the physical form) and a signified (the mental concept). Barthes also introduced the ideas of denotation (the literal, obvious meaning) and connotation (the associated, cultural meanings). In media texts, producers encode meanings through symbolic, iconic and indexical signs, while audiences decode them according to their own cultural knowledge.
符号学由罗兰·巴特创立,研究符号及其意义生成。符号包含能指(物理形式)和所指(心理概念)。巴特还提出外延(字面含义)与内涵(文化关联义)的概念。在媒体文本中,制作者通过象征、图像和指示性符号编码意义,受众则依据自身文化知识进行解码。
Barthes argued that myths are dominant ideologies that become naturalised through repeated representation. For example, an advert for luxury perfume may use a golden-lit bottle (denotation) which connotes wealth, elegance and desire – reinforcing the myth that expensive products bring happiness and status. When analysing any media product, ask: what is shown? What deeper meanings are suggested? Which ideologies are being reinforced or challenged?
巴特认为,“神话”是通过反复再现而被自然化的主导意识形态。例如,一则奢华香水广告可能展示一瓶沐浴在金辉中的香水(外延),却内涵着财富、优雅与欲望,从而强化“昂贵商品带来幸福与地位”的神话。分析任何媒体产品时,都应追问:画面上呈现了什么?暗示了哪些深层意义?哪些意识形态被强化或挑战?
Denotation: a red rose → Connotation: romance, passion, love
外延:一朵红玫瑰 → 内涵:浪漫、激情、爱情
2. Narrative Theory – Todorov | 叙事理论 – 托多罗夫
Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a five-stage structure: equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption, attempt to repair the damage, and a new equilibrium. This linear pattern creates a sense of movement and resolution that audiences find satisfying. The initial state of balance is disturbed by an event (the disruption), which drives the story forward until order is restored, though the final equilibrium is often changed from the original.
茨维坦·托多罗夫认为,大多数叙事遵循五段式结构:平衡、破坏、识别破坏、尝试修复、新的平衡。这一线性模式营造出让受众感到满足的推进感和结局感。初始的平衡状态被某一事件(破坏)打破,推动故事发展,直到秩序得以恢复,不过最终的新平衡往往与初始状态有所不同。
This model applies neatly to many film trailers, television crime dramas and news reports. For instance, in an episode of Doctor Who (a possible CSP), the TARDIS arrives in a peaceful setting (equilibrium), an alien threat emerges (disruption), the Doctor and companion recognise the danger, they devise a plan to defeat the threat (repair), and peace returns, though the characters are changed (new equilibrium). Recognising this pattern helps you discuss how media products structure time and engage audiences.
该模式契合许多电影预告片、电视犯罪剧和新闻报道。以《神秘博士》某一集(可能的规定产品)为例:塔迪斯抵达一个宁静的场景(平衡),外星威胁出现(破坏),博士与同伴意识到危险(识别),设法击败威胁(修复),和平回归,但人物均已发生变化(新平衡)。识别这一模式有助于讨论媒体产品如何组织时间并吸引受众。
3. Narrative Theory – Propp | 叙事理论 – 普罗普
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified eight broad character types, or 'spheres of action', which can be applied to many media narratives. These include: the villain, the hero, the donor (who provides a magical object or help), the helper (who aids the hero), the princess (sought-for person), the dispatcher (who sends the hero off), the false hero, and the princess's father. Not all narratives contain every type, and characters may fulfill more than one role.
弗拉基米尔·普罗普分析了俄罗斯民间故事,归纳出八种广义角色类型,或称“行动范围”,可适用于众多媒体叙事。这些角色包括:反派、英雄、赠与者(提供魔法物品或帮助)、帮手(协助英雄)、公主(被寻找的人物)、派遣者(派英雄出发)、伪英雄、公主的父亲。并非所有叙事都包含全部角色,也可能一个角色兼具多重身份。
Consider a superhero film trailer: the hero (e.g. Spider-Man) is dispatched by a mentor figure, receives a high-tech suit from a donor, is helped by friends, battles a villain to save the city (the princess equivalent), and is briefly challenged by a false hero. Applying Propp makes it easier to identify the function of each character within the story, rather than simply describing what they do.
试想一部超级英雄电影预告片:英雄(例如蜘蛛侠)由导师派遣,从赠与者处获得高科技战衣,在朋友帮助下与反派战斗以拯救城市(相当于公主),并短暂遭遇伪英雄的挑战。运用普罗普理论,能更容易识别每个角色在故事中的功能,而非简单描述他们在做什么。
4. Genre Theory – Steve Neale | 类型理论 – 史蒂夫·尼尔
Steve Neale argues that genres are not fixed formulas; instead, they change over time through processes of repetition and difference. Media products rely on familiar genre conventions so that audiences instantly recognise the category, but they must also offer something new or unexpected to maintain interest. This balance between the familiar and the innovative is essential to the pleasure audiences gain from genre texts.
史蒂夫·尼尔认为,类型并非固定不变的公式,而是通过“重复”与“差异”的相互作用而不断演变。媒体产品依赖熟悉的类型惯例,以便受众瞬间识别类别,但同时又必须有所创新、出人意料,才能保持其兴趣。这种“熟悉与新奇”的平衡,正是受众从类型文本中获得愉悦的关键所在。
In film marketing, a horror poster may repeat familiar iconography like dark forests, blood-red typography and a masked figure (repetition), but it might set the film inside a bright, modern school (difference), blending the ordinary with the terrifying. When analysing a media product, ask which genre codes are being reinforced, and which are subverted or hybridised.
在电影营销中,一张恐怖片海报可能重复黑暗森林、血红色字体和面具人等熟悉的图像符号(重复),却又把故事发生地放在一座明亮的现代校园(差异),将日常与恐怖融为一体。分析媒体产品时,应追问哪些类型符号被强化,哪些被颠覆或混合。
5. Representation – Stuart Hall | 表征 – 斯图亚特·霍尔
Stuart Hall's theory of representation highlights that media texts do not simply reflect reality; they construct versions of reality through selection, emphasis and omission. Meaning is produced through language and images, and it is constantly negotiated between the producer and the audience. Hall also introduced the concept of stereotypes, arguing that they reduce people to a few exaggerated traits and often reflect the power dynamics of the society that creates them.
斯图亚特·霍尔的表征理论强调,媒体文本并非单纯反映现实,而是通过选择、突出和省略来建构现实的版本。意义经由语言和图像产生,并在制作者与受众之间不断协商。霍尔还提出了刻板印象的概念,认为刻板印象将人简化为少数夸张的特征,并常常反映出生产它的社会中的权力关系。
For example, a news report about young people may repeatedly show hooded figures on street corners, omitting images of young volunteers or students. This selective representation can shape public perception, making audiences associate youth with threat. Hall’s approach reminds us to ask: who is represented? How? Who is absent? And whose interests does this representation serve?
例如,一则关于年轻人的新闻报道可能反复展示街角穿连帽衫的身影,却省略了青年志愿者或学生的画面。这种选择性的表征塑造了公众认知,让受众将青少年与威胁联系起来。霍尔的方法提醒我们发问:谁被表征?如何表征?谁被遗忘?这一表征服务于谁的利益?
6. Representation – Van Zoonen & hooks | 表征 – 范·祖宁与胡克斯
Liesbet van Zoonen argues that gender is socially constructed through media representations, and that women are often objectified as passive subjects of a male gaze. In patriarchal visual culture, the female body is presented for the pleasure of a presumed male viewer, reinforcing unequal power relations. Van Zoonen also notes that media language – from camera framing to costume – works to normalise these gendered ways of looking.
利斯贝特·范·祖宁认为,性别是通过媒体表征被社会建构的,女性常被客体化为男性凝视下的被动对象。在父权制的视觉文化中,女性身体被呈现以供假定的男性观者欣赏,从而强化不平等的权力关系。范·祖宁还指出,从镜头构图到服装造型等种种媒体语言,共同使这种性别化的观看方式常态化。
bell hooks extends this analysis by introducing intersectionality – the idea that gender, race, class and other identity markers do not operate separately but combine to shape experience and representation. hooks critiques mainstream media for centring white womanhood while marginalising women of colour. When studying media texts, consider whether the representation challenges or reinforces dominant ideologies about gender and race.
贝尔·胡克斯以交叉性理论延伸了这一分析——性别、种族、阶级等身份标记并非独立运作,而是共同塑造经验与表征。胡克斯批评主流媒体以白人女性为中心,将有色人种女性边缘化。在研究媒体文本时,应考虑其表征是挑战还是巩固了关于性别与种族的主导意识形态。
7. Audience – Uses and Gratifications | 受众 – 使用与满足理论
Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications model suggests that audiences are active, not passive. They deliberately select media products to fulfil specific needs: information (surveillance), personal identity (reinforcing values and self-image), social interaction (connecting with others), and entertainment (escapism and enjoyment). This theory shifts the question from ‘What does the media do to people?’ to ‘What do people do with the media?’
布鲁姆勒与卡茨的使用与满足模型认为,受众是主动而非被动的。他们有意识地选择媒体产品来满足特定需求:信息获取(环境监测)、个人身份认同(强化价值观与自我形象)、社会互动(与他人联结)、娱乐消遣(逃避现实与愉悦)。这一理论将问题从“媒体对人们做了什么”转向“人们用媒体做了什么”。
When analysing a videogame trailer, you can identify how it appeals to personal identity by offering avatars that players empathise with; to social interaction through online multiplayer features; to entertainment via action and spectacle; and to surveillance by providing tips about the game’s world. GCSE answers should always link specific media language elements to intended gratifications.
分析电子游戏预告片时,可以识别它如何通过提供让玩家共情的角色来满足个人身份认同需求;通过在线多人功能满足社交需求;通过动作场面和视觉奇观提供娱乐;以及通过提示游戏世界信息满足信息需求。GCSE 的答题中,应始终将具体的媒体语言元素与预期的满足需求联系起来。
8. Audience – Reception Theory | 受众 – 接受理论
Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory argues that the meaning of a media text is not fixed by its producer; instead, audiences decode messages based on their social and cultural contexts. Hall identified three hypothetical reading positions: the dominant (or preferred) reading, where the audience fully accepts the intended message; the negotiated reading, where the audience broadly accepts the meaning but modifies some aspects; and the oppositional reading, where the audience rejects the intended meaning entirely.
斯图亚特·霍尔的接受理论认为,媒体文本的意义并非由制作者固定;相反,受众依据自身社会与文化背景进行解码。霍尔提出了三种假设性解读立场:主导(或称预期)解读——受众充分接受制作者意图传达的信息;协商解读——受众大体接受,但修改部分内容;对抗解读——受众完全拒绝制作者的意图。
For example, an advert for a cleaning product showing a smiling mother may encode a preferred meaning of domestic happiness and product effectiveness. A negotiated reading might appreciate the product’s efficiency but question the gendered stereotype. An oppositional reading might reject the advert entirely as reinforcing outdated patriarchal roles. This framework teaches us that the same media text can generate multiple, sometimes conflicting, interpretations.
例如,一则清洁产品广告中,一位微笑的母亲可能编码了“家庭幸福、产品高效”的预期意义。协商解读可能认可产品功效,但质疑其中的性别刻板印象;对抗解读则可能全盘拒绝,认为广告强化了过时的父权角色。此框架告诉我们,同一媒体文本可能产生多种,甚至相互冲突的解读。
9. Media Industries – Curran and Seaton | 媒体产业 – 柯伦与西顿
Curran and Seaton’s study of media industries argues that ownership and control shape the content we consume. They stress the importance of diversity and plurality in the media marketplace, warning that when a small number of conglomerates dominate, the range of viewpoints narrows. Concentration of ownership can limit innovation, marginalise minority voices, and prioritise profit over creativity and public service.
柯伦与西顿对媒体产业的研究指出,所有权与控制塑造了我们所消费的内容。他们强调媒体市场多元化和多样性的重要,并警告:当少数大型集团主导时,观点的范围便会收窄。所有权集中会限制创新,边缘化少数群体声音,并将利润置于创意和公共服务之上。
This theory is particularly useful when discussing newspaper groups, film studios and the impact of digital platforms. For the AQA GCSE, you might apply it to the study of The Times (owned by News UK) and the Daily Mirror (owned by Reach plc), exploring how ownership might influence political stance or editorial priorities. Look for evidence of risk-averse behaviour, such as sequels and franchises, as symptoms of conglomerate control.
该理论在讨论报业集团、电影制片厂及数字平台的影响时尤其有用。在 AQA GCSE 中,可将其应用于《泰晤士报》(新闻英国所有)和《每日镜报》(Reach plc 所有)的研究,探讨所有权如何影响政治立场或编辑优先度。留意规避风险的行为,比如大量推出续集和系列电影,这正是集团控制下的表征。
10. Media Language – Technical Codes | 媒体语言 – 技术符码
Technical codes are the tools used to construct meaning through camera work, editing, lighting and sound. Familiarity with precise terminology is essential for high-scoring analysis. Camera shots include extreme long shot (establishing setting), long shot, mid shot, close-up and extreme close-up. Camera angles (high angle, low angle, eye-level) convey power relations. Camera movements (pan, tilt, track, crane, handheld) affect pace and realism.
技术符码是通过摄影、剪辑、灯光和声音来构建意义的工具。精确的术语对高分分析至关重要。镜头景别包括远景(交代场景)、全景、中景、特写和大特写。镜头角度(俯角、仰角、平视)传达权力关系。镜头运动(摇镜、俯仰、推拉、升降、手持)影响节奏与真实感。
Editing techniques include continuity editing (invisible storytelling), jump cuts (disorientation, energy), cross-cutting (parallel action), match on action and shot/reverse shot for conversations. Sound codes are divided into diegetic (sound that exists within the story world, like dialogue and footsteps) and non-diegetic (sound added for the audience, like background music and voice-over).
剪辑技法包括连续性剪辑(看不见的叙事)、跳切(混乱与能量)、交叉剪辑(平行动作)、动作匹配和正反打对话镜头。声音符码分为叙事内声音(存在于故事世界内的声音,如对话与脚步声)和叙事外声音(为受众添加的声音,如背景音乐与画外音)。
Low angle shot → subject appears powerful, dominant
仰拍 → 被摄者显得强大、主导
11. Mise-en-scène & Visual Design | 场面调度与视觉设计
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'everything placed in the scene'. It encompasses setting, props, costume, makeup, lighting, colour and the positioning of figures. Together, these elements create meaning and mood, establishing time, place, genre and character. Analysing mise-en-scène requires asking why each element was chosen and what it communicates to the audience.
场面调度是一个法语术语,意为“场景中所有被安排的元素”。它涵盖场景、道具、服装、化妆、灯光、色彩及人物站位。这些元素共同营造意义与氛围,建立时代感、地点、类型与人物形象。分析场面调度时,需要追问每个元素为何被选择,以及它向受众传递了什么。
For example, in a superhero magazine cover, vibrant primary colours (red, blue, yellow) for costumes signal heroism and energy, while low-key lighting and shadows may be used for a villain to suggest secrecy and menace. Props like hi-tech weapons connote futurism, while classic items like shields imply tradition. Colour grading creates a cohesive visual tone – warm tones for nostalgia, cold blue tones for tension or sci-fi.
例如,在一本超级英雄杂志封面上,战衣的鲜亮原色(红、蓝、黄)彰显英雄气概与活力;而对反派可能采用低光照明和阴影,暗示神秘与威胁。高科技武器等道具内涵未来主义,盾牌类经典物品则暗示传统。整体色调通过色彩分级营造统一的视觉基调——暖色调唤起怀旧,冷蓝色调传递紧张或科幻感。
12. Applying Theories – The CSP Connection | 理论应用 – 关联规定产品
The most effective GCSE answers do not merely name-drop theorists; they weave theoretical ideas into close analysis of the set products. Begin by describing a specific media language choice (a camera shot, a font, a costume detail), then link it to a connotation, before explaining how it illustrates or challenges a named theory. This structure ensures your response is both analytical and evaluative.
最有效的 GCSE 答案并非只是点出一堆理论家名字,而是将理论思想编织进对规定产品的细部分析中。首先描述一个具体的媒体语言选择(一个镜头、一种字体、一处服装细节),然后关联其内涵意义,最后说明它如何印证或挑战某个指名的理论。这一结构能保证答案既具分析性又具评价性。
For your revision, create a theory grid mapping each of the nine theorists to the CSPs. For instance, apply Semiotics (Barthes) to the denotation and connotation of a print advert; Representation (Hall) to a newspaper front cover’s depiction of a social group; Audience (Blumler and Katz) to the gratifications offered by a music video; and Industry (Curran and Seaton) to the ownership and production context of a radio programme. Practising these connections builds fluency and depth.
复习时,可制作一张理论网格,将九位理论家分别与规定产品对应起来。例如,将符号学(巴特)应用于印刷广告的外延与内涵;将表征理论(霍尔)应用于报纸头版对某一社会群体的描绘;将受众理论(布鲁姆勒与卡茨)应用于音乐视频提供的满足需求;将产业理论(柯伦与西顿)应用于某电台节目的所有权与制作背景。反复练习这些关联,能提升答题的流畅度与深度。
