1. Atomic Structure and Subatomic Particles |
All matter is made of atoms. Each atom has a tiny, dense nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. Negatively charged electrons move in discrete energy levels (shells) around the nucleus. The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons and determines the identity of the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
mic number. For example, a sodium atom with mass number 23 and atomic number 11 has 11 protons, 11 electrons and 12 neutrons.
ng the subtraction backwards. Always remember: Mass number = protons + neutrons. Another typical error is thinking that ions have the same number of electrons as protons. A positive ion (cation) has lost electrons, so electrons = protons − charge. A negative ion (anion) has gained electrons, so electrons = protons + charge (absolute value).
2. Electron Configuration and the Periodic Table |
Electrons occupy shells around the nucleus. The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second and third shells up to 8 electrons each. For the first 20 elements, electronic configurations are written as series of numbers, e.g. sodium: 2,8,1 (total 11 electrons). The arrangement links directly to the Periodic Table: the group number (for Groups 1–2 and 13–18) equals the number of electrons in the outermost shell, while the period number equals the number of occupied electron shells.
High-frequency topic: Writing configurations for elements from hydrogen to calcium. A very common mistake appears with potassium (atomic number 19). Students often give the configuration 2,8,9, but the correct arrangement is 2,8,8,1. The fourth shell starts to fill after the third shell reaches 8 electrons (the 4s orbital fills before 3d). Similarly, calcium is 2,8,8,2, not 2,8,10.
Another typical pitfall is drawing electron structures with incorrect electron pairing or placing electrons unevenly. For GCSE-style diagrams, dots or crosses must be paired up only after each side of the shell has one electron. Also remember that the outer shell never holds more than 8 electrons in these elements.
