In AQA GCSE Science, extended writing questions – often worth 4 to 6 marks – test your ability to construct clear, logical and scientifically accurate responses. These 'essay-style' questions are not just about recalling facts; they require you to organise ideas, apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, and communicate in a structured way. This article provides a proven writing framework, practical tips and three full model answers covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics to help you master the extended response in Year 10.
在 AQA GCSE 科学考试中,拓展写作题(通常为 4 到 6 分)旨在考查你构建清晰、逻辑严密且科学准确答案的能力。这类“论文式”问题不只是回忆知识点,更需要你组织观点、将知识应用到陌生情境中,并以结构化的方式进行表达。本文提供一个行之有效的写作框架、实用技巧,以及涵盖生物、化学和物理的三篇完整范文,帮助你掌握 Year 10 的拓展回答。
1. Understanding Command Words | 理解指令词
Every extended question begins with a command word that tells you exactly what to do. Words like 'describe', 'explain', 'compare', 'evaluate' and 'suggest' all require different approaches. 'Describe' asks you to recall facts or state what is happening, while 'explain' demands scientific reasoning with cause and effect. 'Compare' requires similarities and differences, and 'evaluate' means you must give a balanced judgement supported by evidence. Before writing, underline the command word and plan your response to match its specific demand.
每道拓展题都以一个指令词开头,它明确告诉你需要做什么。“描述”要求你回忆事实或陈述正在发生的现象;“解释”则需要给出因果关系的科学理由;“比较”要求写出相同点和不同点;“评价”意味着你必须给出有证据支持的平衡判断。动笔之前,圈出指令词,并据此规划你的回答,确保切合要求。
2. The PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL 段落结构
For most AQA extended responses, the PEEL structure keeps your writing focused and easy to mark. PEEL stands for: Point – state the key idea; Evidence – give a specific example, data or equation; Explanation – link the evidence to scientific principles using 'because', 'so' or 'therefore'; Link – either connect back to the question or transition to the next point. Using PEEL prevents rambling and ensures each paragraph earns its marks.
对于大多数 AQA 拓展回答,PEEL 结构能让你的写作聚焦且易于评分。PEEL 代表:Point(观点)——陈述核心想法;Evidence(证据)——给出具体例子、数据或方程;Explanation(解释)——用“因为”、“所以”或“因此”将证据与科学原理联系起来;Link(衔接)——回扣题目或过渡到下一个观点。使用 PEEL 能够避免漫无边际,让每个段落都拿到相应分数。
3. Planning Your Response | 规划回答
Spend two minutes creating a quick bullet-point plan on the question paper. List the 3–4 key scientific ideas you must include, arrange them in a logical order, and note any keywords, equations or diagrams to mention. A simple plan transforms a blank page into a scaffolded answer and stops you from forgetting important details under time pressure.
花两分钟在试卷上快速列出要点提纲。写下 3 到 4 个必须包含的关键科学概念,按逻辑顺序排列,并标注需要提及的关键词、方程或图表。一个简单的提纲能将空白答题页变成有支架的答案,防止你在时间压力下遗忘重要细节。
4. Writing a Strong Opening | 撰写有力开头
Begin with a concise sentence that directly addresses the question and sets the scope. For a 'compare' question, name both items and state their relationship. For an 'explain' question, announce the scientific model you will use. Avoid repeating the question – instead, rephrase it to show understanding. A focused opening gives the examiner confidence that you know what you are writing about.
以一句简洁的开头直接回应问题并划定范围。遇到“比较”题,先点明两个对象并说出它们的关系;遇到“解释”题,预先说明你要使用的科学模型。不要照抄题目,而是转述以展示理解。聚焦的开头能让考官相信你清楚自己在写什么。
5. Describing Scientific Processes | 描述科学过程
When describing a process such as diffusion or distillation, use sequencing words (first, then, next, finally) and include precise scientific vocabulary. For example, 'First, water molecules evaporate from the surface of the leaves. Then, water vapour diffuses out through open stomata down a concentration gradient.' Linking stages with accurate terms shows depth of knowledge and makes your description easy to follow.
描述扩散或蒸馏等过程时,使用表示顺序的词语(首先、然后、接着、最后),并包含精确的科学词汇。例如,“首先,水分子从叶片表面蒸发。然后,水蒸气沿着浓度梯度通过张开的气孔扩散出去。”用准确的术语连接各阶段,既能展示知识的深度,又能让描述易于理解。
6. Explaining with Cause and Effect | 因果解释
Explanation questions demand a clear chain of reasoning. Start with the initial cause, then state the scientific principle, and finally describe the resulting effect. Use connecting phrases like 'This means that...', 'As a result...', or 'Consequently...'. For instance, when explaining the effect of temperature on enzyme activity: 'As temperature rises, particles gain kinetic energy. This means they move faster, so enzyme-substrate collisions happen more frequently. Consequently, the rate of reaction increases up to the optimum.'
解释类问题要求清晰的推理链条。从初始原因开始,陈述科学原理,最后描述产生的结果。使用“这意味着……”、“因此……”、“结果是……”等连接语。例如,解释温度对酶活性的影响:“随温度升高,粒子获得动能。这意味着它们运动更快,因此酶与底物的碰撞更频繁。结果是反应速率升高,直至达到最适温度。”
7. Using Data and Evidence | 使用数据与证据
Whenever possible, support your points with data from the question, such as numbers from a table, trends in a graph, or observations from an experiment. Quote the data explicitly – 'At pH 7, the rate was 12 cm³/s, whereas at pH 4, it fell to 3 cm³/s.' Then explain what this data shows and why it is significant. Data transforms a general statement into a specific, high-mark answer.
尽可能用题目中的数据支持你的观点,例如表格中的数字、图表中的趋势或实验中的观察结果。明确引用数据——“在 pH 7 时,速率为 12 cm³/s,而在 pH 4 时降至 3 cm³/s。”然后解释这些数据说明了什么及其重要性。数据能将笼统的陈述转化为具体的高分答案。
8. Evaluating Experiments and Models | 评价实验与模型
Evaluation requires a balanced view. Identify both strengths and limitations of a method or model, and suggest practical improvements. Use phrases like 'A strength is...', 'However, a limitation is...', and 'This could be improved by...'. For example, when evaluating water purification by distillation: 'A strength is that it removes dissolved solids. However, a limitation is that it requires a large amount of energy. This could be improved by using solar stills in sunny countries.' Always link improvements to enhanced accuracy or reliability.
评价要求平衡的观点。找出方法或模型的优点与局限,并提出切实可行的改进建议。使用“优点是……”、“然而,局限在于……”、“可以通过……来改进”等句式。例如,评价蒸馏净水:“优点是能去除溶解固体。然而,局限在于能耗大。在日照充足的国家可用太阳能蒸馏器来改进。”始终将改进与提高准确性或可靠性联系起来。
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid | 避免常见错误
Many students lose marks by writing everything they know without focusing on the question, using vague language like 'it goes up a lot', or omitting scientific keywords. Others write in bullet points when continuous prose is required, or fail to manage time, leaving extended questions unfinished. Practise spotting these errors in your own work and always read the question twice to stay on track.
许多学生丢分的原因包括:不扣题地写出所有知道的内容、使用“它上升很多”之类的模糊语言、遗漏科学关键词。还有些人在要求连贯行文时使用要点列表,或者时间安排不当,导致拓展题没写完。通过练习发现自己的这些错误,并始终读题两遍,确保不偏题。
10. Model Answer: Biology – Enzymes and Temperature | 范文:生物——酶与温度
Question: Explain how increasing temperature affects the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction. (6 marks)
问题:解释温度升高如何影响酶控反应的速率。(6 分)
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions by lowering activation energy. As temperature initially rises, the enzyme and substrate molecules gain more kinetic energy. This means they move faster and collide more frequently, leading to more enzyme-substrate complexes forming per second. Therefore, the rate of reaction increases. This trend continues until the temperature reaches the enzyme's optimum – around 37°C for many human enzymes. At the optimum, the rate is at its maximum. However, if the temperature rises above the optimum, the enzyme's active site begins to lose its specific shape because the hydrogen bonds holding its tertiary structure break. The active site is no longer complementary to the substrate, so the substrate cannot bind. The enzyme is denatured, and the reaction rate falls sharply. Eventually, the reaction stops completely.
11. Model Answer: Chemistry – Rates and Collision Theory | 范文:化学——速率与碰撞理论
Question: A student investigates how concentration affects the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium ribbon. Explain why increasing the concentration of acid increases the rate of reaction. Use collision theory in your answer. (6 marks)
问题:某学生研究浓度如何影响盐酸与镁带的反应速率。解释为什么提高酸浓度会加快反应速率。回答中请使用碰撞理论。(6 分)
The rate of a chemical reaction depends on the frequency of successful collisions between reactant particles. Hydrochloric acid contains H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions in solution. Magnesium atoms react with H⁺ ions to produce hydrogen gas and Mg²⁺ ions. When the concentration of hydrochloric acid is increased, there are more H⁺ ions per unit volume in the solution. This means the reactant particles are closer together, so they collide more frequently. According to collision theory, only collisions with energy equal to or greater than the activation energy lead to a reaction. More frequent collisions mean more successful collisions per second, provided the particles have sufficient energy. Therefore, the rate of reaction increases. The same mass of magnesium will be used up in a shorter time. This can be monitored by measuring the volume of hydrogen gas produced over time: the gradient of the initial part of the graph will be steeper for the higher concentration.
12. Model Answer: Physics – Braking Distance and Forces | 范文:物理——制动距离与力
Question: A driver sees a hazard and applies the brakes. Explain the factors that affect the total stopping distance of the vehicle. (6 marks)
问题:某司机看到危险后踩下刹车。解释影响车辆总停车距离的因素。(6 分)
Total stopping distance is the sum of thinking distance and braking distance. Thinking distance is the distance travelled during the driver's reaction time. It is affected by factors such as tiredness, distraction (e.g. using a mobile phone), alcohol, and drugs – all of which increase reaction time. The higher the speed of the vehicle, the further it travels in that fixed reaction time, so thinking distance also increases with speed. Braking distance is the distance the car travels from the moment the brakes are applied until it stops. It depends on the vehicle's speed, the mass of the vehicle, the condition of the brakes and tyres, and the road surface. Braking distance is proportional to the square of the speed: if speed doubles, braking distance roughly quadruples. This is because the kinetic energy to be dissipated as heat by the brakes is ½mv². Worn brakes or wet, icy roads reduce the friction force between tyres and road, so the deceleration is smaller and braking distance increases. Therefore, total stopping distance is affected by a range of human and physical factors.
