📚 Year 10 AQA Physics: Summer Bridging and Transition Course | Year 10 AQA
This bridging course is designed to help you transition smoothly into Year 10 AQA Physics. It reviews the essential concepts from Year 9 and introduces the core topics you will encounter, building a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and mathematical skills. Each section explains key ideas in both English and Chinese, so you can strengthen your understanding and exam readiness over the summer.
The course follows the AQA GCSE Physics specification structure: energy, electricity, particle model, atomic structure, forces, waves and magnetism. You do not need to master everything before September. The aim is to recognise the vocabulary, be confident with the equations, and arrive in class already familiar with the ideas your teacher will develop.
1. How to Use This Summer Bridging Course |
Work through one section per study session. Read the English paragraph first, then read the Chinese paragraph to check that you have understood the meaning. Do not simply memorise the Chinese translation - use it as a mirror for the English scientific language you will meet in the exam.
Every section ends with practice suggestions or a worked example. You should keep a single exercise book for the whole summer, with a clear heading for each section, all working shown, and units written on every answer.
You will need the following equipment:
- A scientific calculator (the Casio FX-83GT or FX-85GT is ideal) | 科学计算器(Casio FX-83GT 或 FX-85GT 最为理想)
- A 30 cm ruler and a pencil for graphs | 30
- Squared paper for distance-time and velocity-time graphs |
- The AQA Physics equation sheet, printed and kept at the front of your book | 打印好的 AQA 物理公式表,夹在练习本首页
2. Energy Stores and Systems |
Energy is stored in different ways: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal, chemical, nuclear, magnetic and electrostatic. You should be able to name each store and give a real example of an object that has energy in that store.
A system is an object or group of objects, and we study how energy is transferred between them. When you define a system, you decide which objects are inside it and which are outside. Everything outside the system is called the surroundings.
Energy is transferred between stores through four pathways. These pathways are not stores themselves; they are the processes by which energy moves.
- Mechanically - by a force doing work, such as pushing a box |
- Electrically - by a current doing work, such as in a heater |
- By heating - from a hotter object to a colder one |
- By radiation - by waves, such as light or sound |
A common exam mistake is to write "energy is lost". Energy is never lost; it is transferred to a store you have not identified, usually the thermal store of the surroundings.
3. Conservation of Energy and Dissipation |
The principle of conservation of energy states that energy can never be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated (often as thermal energy). This is one of the most powerful ideas in physics because it allows you to calculate answers without knowing the details of every force involved.
A closed system is one in which no energy can enter or leave. In a closed system, the total energy in all the stores remains constant. A pendulum swinging in a vacuum is the classic example: the gravitational potential store and the kinetic store swap energy back and forth with no overall change.
Dissipation means energy spreading out into the surroundings, usually into the thermal store, so that it becomes harder to use. Friction between moving surfaces, air resistance on a falling object and electrical resistance in wires all cause dissipation.
Because energy is always dissipated, no machine is 100 per cent efficient. A falling ball bounces to a lower height each time; a mobile phone becomes warm while charging. Both observations are direct evidence of dissipation.
Engineers reduce unwanted transfers by lubricating moving parts, insulating hot pipes, using streamlined shapes on vehicles and using low-resistance wires. In the exam you may be asked to suggest one such method and explain why it works.
4. Kinetic Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy |
Moving objects possess kinetic energy (Ek ms and v is the speed in metres per second. Because the speed is squared, doubling the speed multiplies the kinetic energy by four.
Ek = ½ m v²
ts mass, the gravitational field strength g (≈ 9.8 N/kg on Earth) and the change in height ∆h, as ∆Ep = m g ∆h.
∆Ep = m g ∆h
Note carefully that g is measured in newtons per kilogram (N/kg), which is numerically the same as metres per second squared (m/s²). AQA accepts either unit, but you must be consistent within a calculation.
Here is a worked example. A 0.5 kg ball is thrown upwards at 8 m/s. Its kinetic energy is Ek × 8² = 16 J. If all of this becomes gravitational potential energy, then 16 = 0.5 × 9.8 × ∆h, so ∆h ≈ 3.3 m.
In reality the ball rises slightly less than this because some energy is dissipated by air resistance. Exam questions often ask you to explain that discrepancy in terms of the thermal store of the surroundings.
5. Elastic Potential, Thermal, Chemical and Other Stores |
An object that is stretched or compressed stores elastic potential energy. For a spring that obeys Hooke's law, Ee in N/m and e is the extension in metres. This equation only applies up to the limit of proportionality.
Ee = ½ k e²
A thermal store is really the total kinetic energy and potential energy of the particles inside an object. Heating a substance increases the average kinetic energy of its particles; this is what we measure as a rise in temperature.
Chemical stores include food, fuel, batteries and the molecules in your muscles. Nuclear stores include the energy released in fission and fusion. Magnetic and electrostatic stores are smaller but appear in questions about magnets, charged rods and capacitors.
| Kinetic 动能 | A cyclist moving at 6 m/s | 以 6 m/s 骑行的自行车 |
| Gravitational potential 重力势能 | A book on a shelf | 书架上的书 |
| Thermal 热能 | A cup of hot tea | 一杯热茶 |
| Nuclear 核能 | Uranium fuel in a reactor | 反应堆中的铀燃料 |
| Electrostatic 静电 | Two like charges pushed together | 被推近的同种电荷 |
6. Work Done, Force and Power |
is the force in newtons and s is the distance moved along the line of the force in metres.
W = F s 1 J = 1 N m
If the force is applied at an angle, only the component of the force in the direction of motion does work. If the object does not move, no work is done, no matter how large the force is. This is why holding a heavy bag still for ten minutes transfers no energy, even though your muscles feel tired.
ed in joules and t is the time in seconds. The unit of power is the watt, and 1 W = 1 J/s.
P = E / t P = W / t
udent lifts a 4 kg box 1.5 m onto a shelf in 2 s. The work done against gravity is W = m g ∆ the useful output is less than the total energy the student transfers, because the student's muscles also warm up.
7. Efficiency and Sankey Diagrams |
Efficiency can be expressed as useful output energy transfer divided by total input energy transfer; it is always less than 1 (or 100%) due to dissipative forces. Efficiency has no unit, because it is a ratio of two energies.
efficiency = useful output ÷ total input
÷ 500 = 0.7, or 70 per cent. The remaining 150 J is dissipated, usually into the thermal store of the motor and the surroundings.
A Sankey diagram shows the same information visually. The width of each arrow is proportional to the amount of energy it represents. The input arrow enters on the left, the useful output arrow continues straight ahead, and the wasted arrows branch off downwards or upwards.
Examiners often ask you to calculate efficiency from a Sankey diagram rather than from numbers written in a table. Measure or read the widths carefully, and remember that the useful arrow plus all wasted arrows must equal the input arrow.
If a question asks how to improve efficiency, the answer is always to reduce dissipation: lubricate moving parts, reduce air resistance, insulate hot objects, or use a more efficient component.
8. Specific Heat Capacity and Heating |
sured in joules per kilogram per degree Celsius (J/kg°C). The equation you need is E = m c ∆θ.
E = m c ∆θ
Water has a very high specific heat capacity of about 4200 J/kg°C, which is why it is used in central heating systems and why coastal cities have milder winters than inland cities.
The required practical for this topic involves heating a metal block with an electric heater and measuring the temperature rise. You must control the variables carefully: use the same mass of metal, the same starting temperature and the same heater power each time.
Sources of error include energy escaping to the surroundings, a thermometer that does not reach the centre of the block, and heat lost from the heater itself. Repeating the experiment and taking a mean reduces random error but not systematic error.
9. Electricity Foundations |
ulombs, I is current in amperes and t is time in seconds. One ampere is one coulomb per second.
potential difference of 1 volt means that 1 joule of energy is transferred for every 1 coulomb of charge that passes.
; V = W / Q V = I R P = V I
In a series circuit the current is the same everywhere, the potential differences add up to the supply voltage, and the total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances. In a parallel circuit the potential difference across each branch is the same, and the currents in the branches add up to the current from the supply.
tant temperature, so its current-potential difference graph is a straight line through the origin. A filament lamp does not, because its resistance increases as it gets hotter; its
