📚 Formula & Theory Quick-Reference Handbook |

Welcome to your Year 10 Edexcel Media Studies quick-reference handbook. This guide distils the key theories, concepts and analytical formulas you will need to deconstruct media texts, from print advertisements to film trailers. Think of each section as a 'formula' that unlocks meaning in the four key areas: Media Language, Representation, Audience and Industry. Use this to revise, memorise and apply in exam responses.

1. Media Language Equation: The CAMELS Toolkit | 媒体语言方程式:CAMELS工具包

Visual Meaning = Camera (Shots + Angles + Movement) + Mise-en-scène + Editing + Sound

Camera: Different shot sizes create intimacy or distance. Close-ups reveal emotion; long shots establish setting. Angles can connote power: a low angle makes a subject look dominant. Movement guides the viewer's eye. Mise-en-scène includes setting, costume, props, colour and lighting – everything placed before the camera. Editing determines pace and narrative flow; rapid cuts suggest urgency. Sound is split into diegetic (in the story world) and non-diegetic (added soundtrack).

2. Semiotics: The Sign Formula |

Sign (符号) = Signifier (能指) + Signified (所指)

The signifier is the physical form (image, word, sound). The signified is the mental concept. Together they form a sign. Roland Barthes showed how signs operate on two levels: denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (associated meanings). Barthes’ myth is a second-order sign system that turns cultural ideas into natural truths. For example, a rose (signifier) denotes a flower but connotes romance; through myth it becomes a natural symbol of love.

3. Todorov's Narrative Equilibrium Formula |

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

Tzvetan Todorov argued that most narratives follow a five-stage structure. We begin with a state of equilibrium (everything is in order). Then a disruption (an event or villain) shatters the balance. The characters recognise the disruption and then make an attempt to repair it. Finally, a new equilibrium is established, often changed from the original. This formula fits everything from fairy tales to action movie trailers.

4. Propp's Character Type Formula |

Narrative = Function of 7 Character Types

Provides a magical object or help提供神奇物品或帮助
Helper帮手Aids the hero on the quest在任务中协助英雄
Princess公主(奖品)Object of the hero's desire; reward英雄的欲望对象;奖赏
Dispatcher派遣者Sends the hero on the mission派遣英雄执行任务
False Hero假英雄Appears good, then betrays the hero看似善良,后背叛英雄

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian fairy tales and concluded that, despite surface variety, all stories boil down to these seven character functions. Use this grid whenever you need to identify roles in a film trailer or promotional material.

5. Representation: The Stereotype Equation |

Stereotype = Simplified Group Identity × Repetition in Media

Richard Dyer argued that stereotypes reduce complex human beings to a few exaggerated traits and then naturalise them through constant repetition. The formula is: pick a group, select a handful of dramatic traits, and repeat them until audiences see them as 'truth'. Stuart Hall added that the media's power to represent shapes how we see others – constructing rather than reflecting reality. Van Zoonen showed that gender is similarly a cultural construction, with women often framed as objects to be looked at.

6. Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Audience Media Use = Surveillance + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment

Blumler and Katz proposed that audiences are active, selecting media to satisfy specific needs. Surveillance (or information) – using media to keep up with the world. Personal Identity – finding reinforcement for our values and lifestyle. Personal Relationships (Social Interaction) – using media as a substitute for real companionship or as a conversation starter. Diversion (Entertainment) – escaping from daily routines, relaxing. Remember the four S's: Surveillance, Self-identity, Social interaction, and Satisfaction (entertainment).

7. Stuart Hall's Encoding/Decoding Model |

Encoded Message → Text → Decoding: Preferred / Negotiated / Oppositional Reading

Hall stressed that meaning is not fixed by the producer. The producer encodes a preferred meaning into the text, but audiences decode it based on their own social and cultural backgrounds. A preferred reading accepts the intended message. A negotiated reading partly accepts and partly adapts it. An oppositional reading rejects it entirely. Always ask: what reading is invited? And what other readings are possible?

8. Binary Oppositions Formula (Levi-Strauss) |

Meaning = Conflict between Opposing Concepts (A vs B)

Claude Levi-Strauss suggested that narratives are organised around binary oppositions – pairs of contrasting ideas such as good vs evil, youth vs age, rural vs urban, man vs woman. The conflict between these opposites drives the story forward and reveals dominant cultural values. To use this formula, simply list all the oppositional pairs you can find in a text and consider whose side the narrative favours.

9. Male Gaze Formula (Mulvey) |

Visual Pleasure = Active Male Viewer + Passive Female Object

Laura Mulvey argued that Hollywood cinema is structured around the 'male gaze', where the camera assumes a heterosexual male viewpoint. Women are framed as erotic objects for male pleasure, both within the narrative and for the spectator. This objectification reduces female characters to their appearance. In your analysis, identify: who is doing the looking? Who is being looked at? How does camera framing and clothing contribute to the gaze?

10. Industry & Regulation: Ownership and Funding Models |

Media Output = Ownership Structure + Funding Source + Regulation

oadcasters, such as ITV, rely on advertising revenue and must attract large audiences for profit. Regulation: Ofcom oversees TV and radio, while IPSO handles newspaper complaints in the UK. Think of this as: PSB = licence fee → public service content; Commercial = advertising → market-driven content. Always consider how funding shapes media products.

11. Print Media Layout Formula |

Front Cover = Masthead + Headline + Central Image + Cover Lines + Dateline + Barcode

Print texts like newspapers and magazines follow a repeatable layout code. The masthead establishes brand identity; the main headline and central image work together to attract the eye and convey the primary story; cover lines (or secondary headlines) promote inside content; and utility elements such as the dateline, price and barcode add authenticity. The layout is not accidental – it is designed to guide the reading path and create a hierarchy of importance. Deconstruct the formula to uncover the target audience and the publication’s values.
