1. Introduction to Philosophy |
Philosophy is the rational investigation of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason and language. In Edexcel Philosophy, you will learn to analyse arguments, evaluate evidence and construct reasoned conclusions rather than relying on opinion or tradition.
Key philosophical methods include deductive reasoning (where a conclusion must be true if the premises are true) and inductive reasoning (where the premises provide good but not conclusive support for the conclusion). You will also encounter thought experiments and critical analysis of texts.
The Edexcel GCSE Philosophy specification encourages students to explore both theistic and atheistic perspectives, and to understand why people hold different beliefs about reality, morality and the afterlife.
Edexcel GCSE
2. The Design Argument |
The design argument (also called the teleological argument) claims that the complexity and order in the universe point to a designer – God. William Paley's watch analogy is the classic example: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate mechanism would lead you to infer a watchmaker, not random chance.
Paley argued that natural objects like the human eye exhibit even greater complexity and purpose, so they must have an intelligent designer. This is an inductive argument based on analogy.
David Hume criticised the design argument on several grounds: the analogy between a watch and the universe is weak; the universe might be more like a living organism that grows rather than a machine; and even if a designer exists, the imperfections and suffering in the world prevent us from inferring a perfect God.
Modern versions like the fine-tuning argument suggest that the physical constants of the universe are so precisely set to allow life that a designer is the best explanation. Critics reply that a multiverse could explain fine-tuning without God.
3. The Cosmological Argument |
The cosmological argument seeks to prove God's existence as the cause or necessary ground of the universe. Thomas Aquinas presented three versions of the argument in his 'Five Ways', the most famous being the First Cause argument.
Aquinas argued that everything in motion is moved by something else, and this chain cannot go back infinitely; there must be a First Mover (God) that is itself unmoved. He also argued from causation: every effect has a cause, leading back to an uncaused First Cause.
The Kalam cosmological argument is a popular contemporary version: everything that begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist; therefore, the universe has a cause, which is God. This relies on both philosophical reasoning and modern cosmology like the Big Bang.
Critics challenge the premise that the universe began to exist, or argue that even if a first cause exists, it need not be the God of classical theism – it could be an impersonal force. Bertrand Russell famously claimed the universe is just a 'brute fact'.
4. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |
The problem of evil is one of the strongest challenges to belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. If God is all-powerful, he could prevent evil; if all-loving, he would want to prevent it; yet evil exists. This seems to make the existence of such a God logically impossible.
There are two main forms: the logical problem of evil (an all-good, all-powerful God and evil cannot logically coexist) and the evidential problem of evil (the amount and distribution of evil make God's existence improbable).
The free will defence, most associated with Alvin Plantinga, argues that God gave humans free will, and that moral evil is a necessary consequence of freely chosen actions. A world with free beings who sometimes do evil is better than a world of robots.
The soul-making theodicy, developed by John Hick, suggests that evil and suffering serve as an environment for spiritual growth, allowing humans to develop virtues like compassion, courage and patience.
Some atheists argue these theodicies fail to justify extreme suffering, for example the suffering of innocent children or animals, and that an omnipotent God could have created a world with free will but no evil.
5. Religious Experience |
A religious experience is a subjective encounter with the divine, often described as a direct awareness of God or a transcendent reality. These experiences can take the form of visions, mystical union, numinous feelings or conversion moments.
William James identified four characteristics of mystical experiences: ineffability (impossible to describe), noetic quality (providing profound insights), transiency (temporary) and passivity (the person feels taken over).
The argument from religious experience claims that these experiences provide evidence for God's existence. The principle of credulity (Richard Swinburne) suggests we should trust our experiences unless we have good reason to doubt them.
Critics argue that religious experiences are too diverse and contradictory to support a single divine reality. Naturalistic explanations include psychological projection (Freud), brain states or mental illness, which reduce the experiences to purely physical or psychological phenomena.
6. The Meaning of Life | 生命的意义
The question 'What is the meaning of life?' is central in philosophy. Theistic perspectives argue that life has objective meaning given by God: we are created for a purpose, and fulfilling God's plan gives life significance.
In contrast, existentialist philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre argue that 'existence precedes essence' – we are born without a predetermined purpose, and we must create our own meaning through choices and actions. This can be liberating but also a burden of freedom.
Albert Camus used the myth of Sisyphus to explore the absurdity of life: the world is irrational and silent to our need for meaning, but we can still embrace life and find happiness in the struggle itself, rebelling against meaninglessness.
Nihilism denies any objective meaning, value or purpose, insisting that life is ultimately empty. Many secular thinkers, however, find meaning in relationships, creativity, knowledge and contributing to the well-being of others, even without God.
7. Utilitarianism |
Utilitarianism is a teleological ethical theory that judges actions based on their consequences. The right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Jeremy Bentham developed this theory with his 'hedonic calculus'.
Bentham's calculus measures seven aspects of pleasure and pain: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity and extent. This quantitative approach treats all pleasures as equal, which led to criticisms of being a 'pig philosophy'.
John Stuart Mill refined utilitarianism by distinguishing higher pleasures (intellectual, moral) from lower pleasures (physical, animalistic). He famously stated, 'It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied,' emphasising quality over quantity.
Act utilitarianism applies the greatest happiness principle to each individual situation, while rule utilitarianism follows general rules that, when universally adopted, tend to produce the greatest good. Rule utilitarianism avoids some problems like justifying unjust actions in isolated cases.
|---|---|---|
| Nature of pleasure / 快乐性质 | Quantitative; all pleasures equal / 定量;一切快乐均等 | Qualitative; higher and lower pleasures / 定质;高级与低级快乐 |
8. Situation Ethics |
Situation ethics, developed by Joseph Fletcher, is a Christian ethical theory that places love (agape) as the only absolute rule. It rejects legalism (rigid rules) and antinomianism (no rules), proposing that every moral decision should be guided by what love requires in that unique situation.
Fletcher's six fundamental principles include: only love is intrinsically good; love is the ruling norm; love and justice are the same; love wills the neighbour's good; only the end justifies the means; and love's decisions are made situationally.
A famous example is the case of a woman in a concentration camp who became pregnant through an affair to be released and save her family. Situation ethics would judge this action right because love for her family demanded it, even though it broke the rule against adultery.
Critics argue that making love the sole norm is too vague, allowing people to rationalise almost any action. Some also point out that it relies on a Christian understanding of agape, which may not be shared by non-religious people, and it can lead to inconsistent moral judgements.
9. Free Will and Determinism |
The debate over free will asks whether humans are genuinely free to make choices or whether every action is determined by prior causes. Hard determinism holds that all events, including human actions, are causally determined, so free will is an illusion.
Libertarianism (in philosophy, not politics) claims that free will is real and incompatible with determinism. Some libertarians argue that humans have a special causal power to initiate actions that are not predetermined; others appeal to indeterminacy at the quantum level.
Soft determinism (compatibilism) states that free will and determinism are compatible. A free action is one caused by the agent's own desires and intentions, without external coercion, even if those desires are themselves determined. This is the view of David Hume and modern thinkers like Daniel Dennett.
The Edexcel course explores whether moral responsibility requires free will. If hard determinism is true, can we be held accountable for our actions? This has implications for ethics, law and punishment.
10. Death and the Afterlife |
Beliefs about life after death vary across worldviews. Theism typically affirms some form of afterlife: Christianity and Islam teach bodily resurrection, where the physical body is raised and reunited with the soul; Hinduism and Buddhism hold to reincarnation, where the soul is reborn into a new body.
Dualism, associated with Plato and Descartes, claims that the soul is a non-physical substance that can survive the death of the body. This makes an afterlife conceptually possible. Materialism, however, argues that consciousness is a product of brain activity and cannot survive without the physical body.
The evidence for an afterlife often includes near-death experiences (NDEs), where people report seeing a tunnel, light, or deceased relatives. Sceptics point to neurological explanations such as oxygen deprivation or the release of endorphins, and note that NDEs vary culturally.
Some philosophers argue that the fear of death can give meaning to life by motivating us to act while we can. Others, like Epicurus, claim that death should not be feared, because 'where death is, I am not', so it is nothing to the living.
