1. Line | 线条
A line is a continuous mark made on a surface with a moving point. It can vary in width, direction, length and character—such as straight, curved, zigzag, thick, thin, broken or implied. Lines can define edges, suggest movement or create texture.
Memory trick: Think of 'LINE' as an acronym: Long, Infinite, Narrow, Edge. Every line is essentially a narrow, long edge stretching across a surface.
记忆窍门:把 'LINE' 看作首字母缩略词:Long(长)、Infinite(无限)、Narrow(窄)、Edge(边缘)。
When describing a line in your work, use precise adjectives: calligraphic (flowing like handwriting), contour (outline of a form), gestural (rapid, expressive). Practise saying 'I used sinuous contour lines to describe the figure'—this vocabulary impresses examiners.
2. Shape and Form |
Shape is a two-dimensional (2D) flat area enclosed by lines or defined by colour/value changes. Shapes can be geometric (circles, squares) or organic (freeform, irregular). Form is a three-dimensional (3D) object that has height, width and depth; in drawing, form is created through shading and perspective.
Memory hook: 'Shape = Shadow' (a flat outline on a wall), 'Form = Figurine' ualise tracing your hand on paper: the outline is a shape, but your actual hand is a form.
Under exam conditions, remember to use the terms 'positive shape' (the main subject) and 'negative shape' (the space around or inside it). Describing negative shapes in your observational drawing shows analytical thinking.
3. Colour | 色彩
Colour is perceived when light reflects off a surface into our eyes. The three properties of colour are hue (the colour's name, e.g. red), saturation (intensity or purity) and value (lightness or darkness). These are often remembered as HSV or HSB.
Colour relationships can be memorised using the colour wheel. Primary colours: red, yellow, blue. Secondary: orange, green, purple (mixing two primaries). Tertiary: such as red-orange, blue-green. Complementary colours are opposite each other (red-green, blue-orange, yellow-purple) and create strong contrast. Analogous colours sit next to each other and bring harmony.
Mnemonics: 'Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain' Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). To recall warm and cool colours, think: 'Warm = fire (reds, oranges, yellows); Cool = water (blues, greens, violets)'.
助记口诀:用“Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain”记住彩虹色序(红、橙、黄、绿、蓝、靛、紫)。
4. Tone and Value |
Tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an area, independent of colour. Value is often used interchangeably with tone. A value scale typically runs from pure white to pure black, passing through a series of greys. Tone is fundamental for creating the illusion of three-dimensional form.
Quick recall: When drawing, ask 'Where is the light source?' Highlights are the brightest areas; mid-tones show the object's true local colour; shadows are the darkest. Remember the acronym 'HMS' — Highlight, Mid-tone, Shadow.
Practise building a tone strip of 9 squares from white to black. Number them 1 to 9; that helps you match tones when observing. Describing 'I used a full tonal range from 1 to 9 to model the sphere' shows control.
5. Texture | 肌理
Texture is the surface quality of an object—how it feels or appears to feel. Actual texture is the real tactile surface (rough bark, smooth glass). Implied (visual) texture is the illusion of texture created on a flat surface using marks, lines or paint handling.
Memory hack: Link 'Actual' with 'Touch' (A-T) and 'Implied' with 'Illusion' (I-I). When writing an annotation, always specify which type you are referring to and how you achieved it, e.g. 'I used cross-hatching to imply the rough texture of the stone.'
Many artists create texture through impasto (thick paint applied with a palette knife) or frottage (rubbing over a textured surface). Visualise the word 'impasto' as 'im-paste' — thick paste — to remember it.
6. Space | 空间
Space in art refers to the area within, around, above or below objects. Positive space is occupied by the subject; negative space is the empty area around it. Artists manipulate space to create depth using perspective, overlapping, size variation and atmospheric effects.
Perspective is key: linear perspective uses converging parallel lines meeting at a vanishing point; aerial perspective makes distant objects lighter, bluer and less detailed. A simple mnemonic: 'Linear = Lines; Aerial = Atmosphere'.
In your own work, discussing negative space demonstrates sophistication. Say 'I carefully observed the negative space between the chair legs to improve accuracy.' Even a single-sentence reference to negative space earns marks for formal observation.
7. Pattern | 图案
Pattern is a repeated decorative design, often formed by recurring lines, shapes, colours or motifs. Patterns can be regular and predictable or irregular and organic. In art, pattern is used to unify a composition, draw attention or create rhythm and movement.
Quick memory: Pattern = 'Plan + Repeat' that repeats. Think of a wallpaper: one motif repeated across the wall. This link between 'pattern' and 'repetition' will help you spot it in artworks.
When you use pattern in your work, name the type: geometric pattern, natural/organic pattern, or symbolic pattern. For example, 'I incorporated a geometric pattern inspired by Islamic tiles to frame the portrait.' This connects your practical work with contextual references.
8. Balance | 平衡
Balance is the distribution of visual weight in a composition. It can be symmetrical (mirror-image balance, formal), asymmetrical (different elements that still feel balanced, informal) or radial (elements arranged around a central point, like a mandala).
Memory clues: 'Symmetry = Same both sides'; 'Asymmetry = Appears same weight but not identical'; 'Radial = Rays from a centre' metrical is a heavy person closer to the centre balanced by a lighter person farther away.
When analysing a painting, commenting on its use of asymmetrical balance demonstrates deeper understanding. 'The large dark tree on the left is balanced by the group of tiny bright figures on the right' is a valuable observation.
9. Contrast | 对比
Contrast refers to striking differences between elements placed together. It can involve colour (complementary colours), tone (light against dark), texture (rough beside smooth), size (large vs. small) or shape (geometric vs. organic). High contrast adds drama; low contrast brings subtlety.
Memory map: Contrast = 'Conflict creates interest'. The word 'contrast' contains 'contra' st to make your focal point stand out. If everything has similar value, the eye gets lost.
A classic examination example is the use of chiaroscuro (strong contrast between light and dark) in Baroque painting. Use the term 'tonal contrast' when writing about shading in your drawings.
10. Emphasis and Focal Point |
Emphasis is the principle of making one element stand out to capture the viewer's attention first. The focal point is the specific area an artist directs you to look at. Artists create emphasis through contrast, placement (usually off-centre, following the rule of thirds), isolation, or convergence of leading lines.
Snappy summary: 'Focal point = Where your eye lands first.' en the emphasis by adding brighter colour, sharper detail or darker tone around that spot.
When annotating, say 'I created a focal point around the figure's face by using the highest tonal contrast and placing it off-centre according to the rule of thirds.' This shows you understand both technique and compositional theory.
11. Rhythm and Movement |
Rhythm in art is the repetition or alternation of visual elements to create a sense of organised movement, much like a beat in music. It leads the viewer's eye from one part of the artwork to another. Rhythm can be regular, flowing, progressive or random.
Memory linkage: Think 'Rhythm = Visual Music' ays in a colonnade create a regular rhythm; wavy lines in a textile create flowing rhythm.
Movement is the result of rhythm—the path your eye follows. Artists can imply motion through blurred lines, dynamic diagonals, or repeated figures (like in Futurist paintings). Remember: 'Rhythm is the engine, Movement is the journey.'
12. Unity and Variety |
Unity (or harmony) is the feeling that all parts of a composition belong together and form a cohesive whole. It is achieved through the consistent use of colours, shapes, textures or themes. Variety is the use of different elements to add interest and avoid monotony. The balance between unity and variety is crucial.
Simple formula: 'Unity = Togetherness; Variety = Spice.' ads to a boring composition; too much variety creates chaos. Aim for a composition that is 'unified with accents of variety' veryone is in the same setting (unity), but each person wears different clothes (variety).
In your final evaluation, use these words: 'I achieved unity by repeating the circular motif and a limited palette of blues. I introduced variety through textured collage papers and varying scale.' This perfectly captures an A-grade vocabulary in action.
