1. Map Skills and Grid References |
A topographic map uses symbols, scale, and grid lines to represent the real world. Scale is the relationship between distance on the map and actual distance on the ground, shown as a ratio (e.g. 1:50 000) or a bar scale.
To find a location accurately, we use six-figure grid references. The first three digits give the easting (left to right) and the last three digits give the northing (bottom to top). A useful reminder is 'along the corridor and up the stairs'.
Compass directions help describe relative positions. The four cardinal points are north, south, east and west, while four-figure grid references locate a whole grid square.
Contour lines join points of equal height, showing relief. Closely spaced contours indicate steep slopes; widely spaced contours indicate gentle slopes. Spot heights and layer shading also illustrate terrain.
2. River Systems and Landforms |
A drainage basin is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. The boundary between two basins is called a watershed. The source is where a river begins, and the mouth is where it flows into a lake or sea.
Rivers erode, transport and deposit material. The four main erosion processes are hydraulic action (force of water), abrasion (rocks grinding), attrition (rocks hitting each other) and solution (dissolving minerals).
In the upper course, steep gradients create V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs and waterfalls. A waterfall forms where a band of hard rock lies over softer rock; the soft rock erodes faster, creating a plunge pool.
In the middle and lower courses, rivers develop meanders. Over time, a meander can be cut off to form an oxbow lake. Floodplains and levees build up due to repeated flooding and deposition.
The main transport processes are traction (large boulders rolled), saltation (small stones bounced), suspension (fine particles carried) and solution (dissolved load).
3. Coastal Erosion and Deposition |
Waves are the main force shaping coastlines. Destructive waves have a strong backwash and erode the shore, while constructive waves have a strong swash and deposit material.
Coastal erosion produces landforms such as headlands, bays, caves, arches, stacks and stumps. A headland is eroded on both sides to form a cave, which can become an arch and eventually a stack when the arch collapses.
Longshore drift moves sediment along the coast in a zigzag pattern determined by the prevailing wind. This leads to depositional features like beaches, spits and bars.
Spits are long, narrow ridges of sand or shingle that extend from the coast into the sea, often with a curved end. A salt marsh may develop in the sheltered water behind a spit.
4. Weather Systems and Rain Types |
Weather describes the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, while climate is the average weather over a long period (usually 30 years). Weather elements include temperature, precipitation, wind speed, cloud cover and air pressure.
Air masses are large bodies of air with uniform temperature and humidity. The UK is affected by polar maritime, polar continental, tropical maritime and tropical continental air masses.
There are three main types of rainfall. Convectional rainfall occurs when the sun heats the ground, causing warm air to rise, cool and condense. Relief rainfall happens when moist air is forced to rise over hills. Frontal rainfall forms where warm and cold air masses meet.
High-pressure systems (anticyclones) bring settled, dry weather with clear skies in summer and fog in winter. Low-pressure systems (depressions) bring unsettled weather, strong winds and precipitation.
5. Climate Zones and Biomes |
The world can be divided into broad climate zones based on latitude: tropical, dry, temperate, continental and polar. Each zone has distinctive temperature and precipitation patterns.
A biome is a large ecosystem characterized by a particular climate, soil, plants and animals. Examples include tropical rainforests, deserts, savanna grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, taiga and tundra.
Tropical rainforests are located near the Equator. They have high temperatures and heavy rainfall year-round, producing lush vegetation with a multi-layered structure. Deforestation threatens this biome.
Hot deserts receive less than 250 mm of rain per year and have extreme temperature ranges. Plants like cacti and animals like camels have adaptations to survive in arid conditions.
6. Population and Migration |
Population density is the number of people per square kilometre. Areas with sparse population often have extreme climate, rugged relief or poor soil, whereas densely populated areas tend to have fertile soil, water supply and job opportunities.
The population of a place changes due to natural change (births minus deaths) and net migration (immigration minus emigration). The birth rate and death rate are expressed per 1000 people.
Push factors drive people away from an area (e.g. unemployment, war, natural disasters), while pull factors attract people to a new area (e.g. better jobs, safety, climate).
The demographic transition model shows how birth and death rates change as a country develops. In Stage 1 both rates are high; in Stages 2 and 3 death rate falls, then birth rate declines; Stage 4 has low, stable population.
7. Settlement Patterns and Urbanisation |
A settlement is a place where people live. Early settlers chose sites near water, on flat land, with defensive advantages or at route centres. The situation describes the settlement's location in relation to surrounding features.
Settlement patterns include dispersed (isolated farmsteads), linear (along a road or river) and nucleated (clustered around a crossroads). Hamlet, village, town and city form a hierarchy based on size and services.
Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of people living in urban areas. More than half the world's population now lives in towns and cities. Rapid urbanisation can lead to housing shortages and traffic congestion.
The Burgess model describes urban land use in concentric rings: CBD in the centre, surrounded by inner city (old industry), terraced housing, semi-detached suburbs and commuter zone. The model is simplified but helps explain spatial patterns.
8. Economic Activities and Development |
Economic sectors describe the main types of work: primary (extracting raw materials, e.g. farming, mining), secondary (manufacturing, e.g. car assembly) and tertiary (providing services, e.g. retail, healthcare). The quaternary sector adds ICT and research.
The Clark–Fisher model shows how employment structure changes over time: pre-industrial societies rely on primary; industrialising countries grow secondary; post-industrial nations shift to tertiary and quaternary.
Development is measured by indicators such as GDP per capita, literacy rate, life expectancy and access to clean water. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education and income.
Fair trade aims to give producers in low-income countries a fair price for their crops, promoting sustainability and community development. Globalisation connects economies through trade, investment and technology.
9. Environmental Issues and Sustainability |
The enhanced greenhouse effect is caused by increased greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane) from burning fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture. This leads to global warming and climate change.
Impacts of climate change include rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events, loss of habitats and changes in agricultural yields. Mitigation involves reducing emissions; adaptation means adjusting to the changes.
Other environmental challenges are air and water pollution, plastic waste and loss of biodiversity. Sustainable development meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro and geothermal can replace fossil fuels. Small-scale examples like solar panels on homes contribute to a low-carbon economy.
10. Fieldwork and Enquiry Skills |
Geographical enquiry follows stages: ask a question, collect data, present data, analyse and reach a conclusion, and evaluate. This helps to investigate topics like river velocity, traffic counts or beach profiles.
Primary data is collected first-hand (questionnaires, measurements, photos). Secondary data comes from books, maps, websites or census records. Both types are valuable when cross-checked for accuracy.
When presenting data, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts and scatter graphs make patterns visible. Always label axes, add a title and use appropriate scales.
Risk assessment is essential before fieldwork: identify potential hazards (traffic, weather, uneven ground) and describe control measures to reduce risk. Evaluation reflects on limitations and how to improve the enquiry.
