1. What is Business? |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to customers in order to satisfy their needs and wants. The main goal of most businesses is to earn a profit, but some may also aim to provide a service to the community, protect the environment or support a cause. Businesses can be small, like a local bakery, or large, such as a multinational technology company. In all cases, businesses combine resources to create products that people are willing to buy.

Businesses operate within an economic system and must respond to changes in consumer tastes, competition and government regulations. The decisions they make about what to produce, how to produce it and for whom form the basis of the subject.

2. Needs and Wants |

Understanding the difference between needs and wants is fundamental to business. Needs are things we require to survive, such as food, water, shelter and clothing. Wants are desires for products that make life more comfortable or enjoyable but are not essential for survival, like a smartphone, designer clothing or entertainment subscriptions. Businesses thrive by identifying and satisfying the wants of consumers, often by adding features that turn a basic product into a more desirable item.

Successful businesses conduct market research to discover what customers want and how much they are willing to pay. They then design products and marketing messages that appeal to those wants while ensuring that the basic needs of the market are also met.

3. Factors of Production |

To produce any good or service, a business needs resources, known as the four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise.

Land includes all natural resources used in production, such as forests, minerals, water and the physical site where a business operates. Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, contributed by employees. Capital refers to the tools, machinery, equipment and buildings used to produce goods and services, not to money itself. Enterprise is the ability to bring the other three factors together, take risks and innovate – this is provided by entrepreneurs.

Businesses must use these factors efficiently to keep costs down and remain competitive. The relative importance of each factor varies by industry – a farming business relies heavily on land, while a software company depends more on labour and enterprise.

4. Sectors of Industry |

Business activities are classified into three main sectors of industry: primary, secondary and tertiary.

The primary sector extracts raw materials directly from the earth or sea. Examples include farming, fishing, mining and forestry. The secondary sector takes these raw materials and converts them into finished or semi-finished goods through manufacturing, construction and processing. Car factories, bakeries and house builders are all part of the secondary sector. The tertiary sector provides services rather than physical products. Retail, banking, education, healthcare and tourism are key tertiary activities.

In developed economies like Northern Ireland, the tertiary sector accounts for the largest share of employment and output. Understanding these sectors helps explain how different businesses depend on one another in a chain of production.

5. Types of Business Ownership |

When starting a business, the owner must choose a legal structure. The main types of ownership covered in Year 9 are sole trader, partnership and private limited company.

Ownership Type Key Features (English)
Sole Trader Owned and run by one person. The owner keeps all profits but has unlimited liability for debts.
Partnership Two or more owners share risks, responsibilities and profits. Partners usually have unlimited liability unless a limited partnership is formed.
Private Limited Company (Ltd) A separate legal entity owned by shareholders. Liability is limited to the amount invested. Shares cannot be sold to the public.

A key concept here is limited liability: shareholders only risk losing the money they have invested, not their personal assets. This encourages investment and growth, but limited companies must follow more regulations and publish accounts.

6. Stakeholders |

Stakeholders are individuals or groups who have an interest in the activities and performance of a business. They can be internal or external.

Internal stakeholders include owners, managers and employees. Owners want profits and growth, managers seek good performance and career progression, and employees aim for fair pay, job security and good working conditions. External stakeholders include customers, suppliers, the local community, the government, pressure groups and lenders. Customers want quality products at fair prices, suppliers want reliable orders, the community wants a clean environment and employment, and the government collects taxes and expects compliance with laws.

Businesses must balance the conflicting interests of different stakeholders. For example, increasing wages pleases employees but reduces owners' profits. Effective communication and ethical practices help manage these relationships.

7. Demand and Supply |

The market price of a product is determined by the interaction of demand and supply. Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price. Supply is the quantity that producers are willing and able to offer for sale.

The law of demand states that, all else equal, as price rises, quantity demanded falls, and as price falls, quantity demanded rises. The law of supply states that as price rises, quantity supplied rises, because higher prices provide an incentive to produce more.

Equilibrium: Quantity demanded = Quantity supplied at a certain price.

When demand exceeds supply, shortages occur and prices tend to rise. When supply exceeds demand, surpluses occur and prices tend to fall towards equilibrium. Businesses must monitor demand and supply conditions to set the right price and plan production.

8. Introduction to Marketing: The 4Ps | 市场营销基础:4P

Marketing is about identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. The marketing mix, often called the 4Ps, is a tool businesses use to influence customers to buy their products. The four elements are Product, Price, Place and Promotion.

Product – the good or service being offered. This includes design, features, quality, packaging and branding. Price – the amount customers pay. Pricing strategies can include cost-based pricing, competitor-based pricing or penetration pricing. Place – how the product gets to the customer. This covers distribution channels, retail locations and online availability. Promotion – the methods used to communicate with customers and persuade them to buy, such as advertising, sales promotions, public relations and social media.

An effective marketing mix must be consistent and targeted at the right audience. For example, a luxury brand would offer a high-quality product, set a premium price, sell through exclusive stores and use sophisticated advertising.

9. Revenue, Costs and Profit |

Profit is the financial reward for taking risks in business. It is calculated as total revenue minus total costs. Revenue is the income a business receives from selling its goods or services. It is found by multiplying the price per unit by the quantity sold.

Revenue = Price × Quantity sold

Costs are the expenses involved in producing and selling products. They can be fixed (do not change with output, e.g. rent) or variable (change with output, e.g. raw materials). Total costs are the sum of fixed and variable costs.

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs

A business that makes a loss must either increase revenue or cut costs to survive. Break-even occurs when total revenue equals total costs, resulting in neither profit nor loss.

10. Economic Systems |

The way a country organises its resources and distributes goods and services is called its economic system. The three main types are market, planned and mixed economies.

In a market economy, decisions about what, how and for whom to produce are made by private businesses and consumers through the price mechanism. Competition and profit motivate producers. The USA has many market-oriented features. In a planned economy, the government makes all key economic decisions and owns most resources. Individual choice is limited, as seen historically in the Soviet Union. A mixed economy combines elements of both: the private sector operates businesses for profit, while the government provides public services such as education, healthcare and defence, and regulates industry. The UK, including Northern Ireland, has a mixed economy.

Businesses must understand the economic system in which they operate because it affects levels of competition, taxation, regulation and the availability of public services.
