Every section below is written for the 13-14 age group: no university-level mathematics, no unexplained jargon, just a clear route from "I know the textbook" to "I can handle an unfamiliar problem under time pressure".
1. Understanding International Chemistry Competitions |
International chemistry competitions for 13-14 year-olds, such as the RSC Top of the Bench and the ICQ, go beyond textbook questions.
They challenge you to interpret unfamiliar data, link concepts across topics, and apply scientific reasoning to novel situations. This is exactly why they are respected by selective schools and future admissions tutors.
Most contests feature multiple-choice and short-answer questions, often with a practical or experimental focus. Some, like Top of the Bench, add a genuine hands-on round where your team must follow a method, record results and draw conclusions in real time.
| Competition | Who enters | Format | Why it suits Year 9 |
| RSC Top of the Bench | Teams of 4, Years 9-11 | Written paper + practical round | Teamwork; Year 9 content is enough to start |
| International Chemistry Quiz (ICQ) | Individual, Years 7-12 | 30 multiple-choice questions, about 45-60 minutes | Low entry barrier; fast feedback |
| Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (C3L6) | Mostly Year 12 | Written paper, very stretching | A long-term goal to aim towards |
| International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) | National selection, post-16 | Multi-round, theory + practical | The summit; your early training builds it |
Familiarising yourself with the format early will build confidence and reduce anxiety on competition day. Read the instructions on a past paper even before you can answer every question - format familiarity is free marks.
A useful way to think about competition chemistry is that three skills are tested at once: recall (facts), fluency (calculations), and transfer (applying a familiar idea to a strange context). School exams mostly test the first two; competitions live in the third.
2. Mapping CCEA Year 9 Topics to Competition Content | CCEA
The CCEA Year 9 chemistry curriculum covers atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical formulas and equations, acids and alkalis, and introductory reactivity.
These form the backbone of competition questions, but you will need to extend your knowledge into areas like oxidation numbers, simple stoichiometry, and data analysis. The table below shows the extension you should add to each school topic.
| CCEA Year 9 topic | Competition extension |
| Atomic structure, isotopes | Calculating relative atomic mass from percentage abundances; electron configuration 2,8,8 |
| Periodic table, groups | Explaining trends in Group 1, Group 7 and Group 0; predicting properties of unknown elements |
| Formulas and equations | Empirical formulas, ionic equations, half equations, state symbols |
| Acids, alkalis, pH | Titration calculations, strong vs weak acids, indicators |
| Reactivity and displacement | Redox in terms of electrons, oxidation numbers, reactivity series predictions |
| Rates and simple practical work | Reading rate graphs, identifying variables, evaluating apparatus choice |
Create a checklist of CCEA learning outcomes and tick off each as you also explore the deeper concepts. Linking curriculum content to competition content is the single most efficient revision habit you can build this year.
A practical rule: for every topic you finish in class, write one competition-style question of your own about it. Writing questions forces you to see where the difficulty actually lies.
3. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table: Building the Edge |
on has charge -1 and a mass of about 1/1836. Mass number = protons + neutrons, and in a neutral atom electrons = protons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Competition questions rarely stop at the definition - they ask you to use isotope abundances to calculate a relative atomic mass.
Aᵣ = (mass₁ × abundance₁ + mass₂ × abundance₂ + …) ÷ 100
For chlorine, 75% is chlorine-35 and 25% ntest gives you a non-integer relative atomic mass, this calculation is almost certainly why.
For the periodic table, competitions expect explanations, not just statements. Group 1 metals become more reactive down the group because the outer electron is further from the nucleus and shielded by more inner shells, so it is lost more easily.
Group 7 reactivity decreases down the group because the outer shell is further from the nucleus and the incoming electron is less strongly attracted. Group 0 elements are unreactive because they have full outer shells - a fact that unlocks many unfamiliar-element questions.
Na (2,8,1) → Na⁺ (2,8) + e⁻ | Cl (2,8,7) + e⁻ → Cl⁻ (2,8,8)
Learn to write these ion equations fluently in both directions, and practise describing electronic configurations using the numbers 2,8,8 (and 2,8,8,2 for calcium).
4. Formulas, Equations and Simple Stoichiometry |
Balancing equations is the minimum entry requirement. Count atoms of every element on both sides, adjust coefficients only, and never change a subscript - changing a subscript changes the substance and loses the mark.
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O | CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂
Always add state symbols when asked: (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, (aq) for aqueous. In competition papers these are worth marks and are easy to forget under time pressure.
Ionic equations are the next step. For the reaction of an acid with an alkali, the spectator ions disappear and you are left with the essential change:
H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l)
Empirical formulas appear regularly. Given a percentage composition of 40.0% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen and 53.3% llest: 3.33 ÷ 3.33 = 1, 6.7 ÷ 3.33 = 2, 3.33 ÷ 3.33 = 1, so the empirical formula is CH₂O.
is gain. In Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ + e⁻, iron is oxidised. In Cl₂ + 2e⁻ → 2Cl⁻, chlorine is reduced.
Oxidation numbers are simply electron book-keeping. Uncombined elements are 0; oxygen is usually -2; hydrogen is usually +1; simple ions take their charge. In MnO₄⁻ the manganese is +7, and in Cr₂O₇²⁻ the chromium is +6.
5. Acids, Alkalis and Reactivity Beyond the Classroom |
The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. A change of one pH unit is a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration, which is why pH is logarithmic - competitions love this idea because it makes "double the acid" questions non-obvious.
Neutralisation is the reaction of an acid with a base to give a salt and water. In titration calculations, use the relationship between moles, concentration and volume, then apply the reacting ratio from the balanced equation.
n = c × V (V in dm³) → n(HCl) ÷ n(NaOH) = 1 : 1
he ratio is 1:1, so n(HCl) = 0.00250 mol. Then c(HCl) = 0.00250 ÷ 0.0200 = 0.125 mol dm⁻³.
The reactivity series - K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ag, Au - predicts displacement and metal extraction. A metal will displace any metal below it from a compound, so zinc displaces copper from copper(II) sulfate solution.
Zn(s) + CuSO₄(aq) → ZnSO₄(aq) + Cu(s)
Learn your gas tests cold, because they appear as quick marks: hydrogen gives a squeaky pop with a lighted splint; oxygen relights a glowing splint; carbon dioxide turns limewater milky; chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper.
6. Quantitative Skills: Moles, Concentration and Yield |
Moles are the currency of chemistry. The core relationships you must know by heart are shown below - learn them as formulas, then practise until you can choose the right one within five seconds.
n = m ÷ M | n = c × V | n = V(gas) ÷ 24 (at room temperature)
n = c × V. More marks are lost to unit conversion errors than to genuine misunderstanding.
.85 ÷ 58.5 = 0.100 mol. V = 250 ÷ 1000 = 0.250 dm³. So c = 0.100 ÷ 0.250 = 0.400 mol dm⁻³.
例:将 5.85 g NaCl(M = 58.5 g mol⁻¹)溶解配成 250 cm³ 溶液。n = 5.85 ÷ 58.5 = 0.100 mol;V = 250 ÷ 1000 = 0.250 dm³;故 c = 0.100 ÷ 0.250 = 0.400 mol dm⁻³。
one mole of any gas occupies about 24 dm³, so 0.50 mol of CO₂ occupies 0.50 × 24 = 12 dm³.
Percentage yield compares what you actually obtained with the theoretical maximum; atom economy compares the mass of the desired product with the total mass of all reactants. They are different ideas and competitions test the difference deliberately.
Percentage yield = (actual ÷ theoretical) × 100%
Atom economy = (M of desired product ÷ ΣM of all reactants) × 100%
t CaO has M = 56 and the reactant CaCO₃ has M = 100, so the atom economy is 56 ÷ 100 × 100% = 56%. If an 8.0 g theoretical yield gives only 6.4 g, the percentage yield is 6.4 ÷ 8.0 × 100% = 80%.
Avogadro' questions. Use it as a bridge: convert mass to moles first, then multiply by 6.02 × 10²³.
7. Practical and Experimental Reasoning |
Competition practical rounds test three things: whether you can choose sensible apparatus, whether you can record data honestly, and whether you can explain an unexpected result.
