📚 Year 9 CAIE Chemistry: Speaking & Listening Exam Preparation Special | Year 9 CAIE 化学:听说备考专项
Even though the official CAIE Year 9 Chemistry exam does not include a separate speaking or listening test, mastering the pronunciation and aural comprehension of chemical terms is crucial for success in practical lessons, understanding experiments, and communicating scientific ideas clearly. In an international learning environment, you will hear teachers and peers use English technical vocabulary every day. This revision guide focuses on building your speaking and listening skills in chemistry, covering element names, compound naming rules, common laboratory instructions, and listening drills to help you feel confident in the classroom and during assessments.
尽管 CAIE Year 9 化学官方考试不包含独立的听说测试,但掌握化学术语的正确发音和听力理解对于实验课、理解科学概念以及清晰沟通至关重要。在国际学习环境中,你每天都会听到老师和同学使用英语专业词汇。本复习指南专注于培养你在化学学科中的听说技能,涵盖元素名称、化合物命名规则、常见实验指令和听力练习,帮助你在课堂和评估中更加自信。
The guide is built around one simple idea: in science, speech comes before writing. If you can say a term correctly and recognise it when someone else says it, you can read it, spell it and use it in a written answer. Every section below pairs English and Chinese explanations so that you can revise bilingually, then ends with a short practical task you can do in five minutes.
本指南围绕一个简单的理念展开:在科学学习中,口语先于书写。如果你能正确说出一个术语,并且别人说的时候你能听懂,那么你就能读它、拼它,并在书面答案中使用它。下文每一节都采用中英对照讲解,方便你双语复习,并在结尾附上一个五分钟即可完成的小任务。
1. Why Speaking and Listening Matter in Year 9 Chemistry | 为什么听说能力在 Year 9 化学中很重要
CAIE does not set a separate Year 9 Chemistry speaking or listening paper. Instead, the skills are assessed indirectly: through your practical work, your written answers in Checkpoint-style papers, and later through the IGCSE Chemistry practical and alternative-to-practical routes. A student who cannot follow a spoken instruction such as 'add the acid dropwise until the indicator just changes colour' will lose marks in the laboratory even if the theory is perfect.
CAIE 并没有为 Year 9 化学单独设置口语或听力试卷。这些能力是通过间接方式评估的:实验操作、Checkpoint 风格的笔答,以及之后的 IGCSE 化学实验卷或替代实验卷。一个听不懂 "add the acid dropwise until the indicator just changes colour"(逐滴加入酸直到指示剂刚好变色)这类口头指令的学生,即便理论满分,也会在实验室里丢分。
Three everyday situations make listening and speaking essential in chemistry:
在化学学习中有三种日常情境让听说能力变得不可或缺:
- Safety briefings before a practical, where a single misheard word ('dilute' versus 'concentrated') changes the risk level.
- Teacher demonstrations, where the method is narrated aloud before you write it down.
- Group investigations, where you must explain your results and challenge a partner's conclusion politely.
- 实验前的安全讲解,一个词听错("dilute 稀" 与 "concentrated 浓")就会改变风险等级。
- 教师演示,方法通常先口头叙述,然后你才记录。
- 小组探究,你必须解释自己的结果,并礼貌地质疑同伴的结论。
Quick task: record yourself reading one paragraph of your textbook aloud, then listen back and mark every word you hesitated on. Those words are your first vocabulary list.
小任务:把课本中的一段朗读并录音,回听时标记出所有你犹豫过的单词,这些词就是你第一份词汇清单。
2. The Roots of Chemical Language: Latin and Greek | 化学语言的根源:拉丁语与希腊语
Almost every chemical term is built from a small set of Latin and Greek roots and affixes. If you learn the building blocks, you can decode a word you have never heard before, which is exactly what a listener has to do in real time. For example, 'hydro' means water, 'therm' means heat, 'photo' means light, 'chlor' means pale green, and 'oxy' means sharp or acid-forming.
几乎每个化学术语都由一小部分拉丁语和希腊语的词根与词缀构成。如果你掌握了这些构件,就能在听到生词时当场解码,而这正是听力理解必须做的实时工作。例如 hydro 表示水,therm 表示热,photo 表示光,chlor 表示淡绿色,oxy 表示尖锐的或成酸的。
Common suffixes carry meaning too, and they are usually the part that decides what the substance actually is:
常见后缀同样承载意义,而且往往正是决定物质究竟是什么的关键部分:
| Suffix / 后缀 | Meaning / 含义 | Example / 例词 |
| -ide | two elements only / 仅两种元素 | sodium chloride |
| -ate | contains oxygen / 含氧 | copper(II) sulphate |
| -ite | contains less oxygen / 含氧较少 | sodium nitrite |
| -ic / -ous | higher / lower oxidation state / 高价与低价 | sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid |
Quick task: take five words from your notes and underline the root, then guess a related word you have not met yet. Check your guess in a dictionary.
小任务:从笔记中取五个词,划出词根,然后猜一个你还没学过的相关词,并用词典验证。
3. Pronunciation Rules: Syllables and Stress | 发音规则:音节与重音
Chemical English is predictable once you know the stress rules. Most element names ending in '-ium' are stressed on the third syllable from the end: SO-di-um, KAL-ci-um, po-TAS-si-um. The stress is what makes a word recognisable to a listener, far more than the individual sounds. If you put the stress in the wrong place, a teacher may not understand you even though every consonant is correct.
只要掌握重音规则,化学英语其实很有规律。大多数以 -ium 结尾的元素名称,重音落在倒数第三个音节:SO-di-um、KAL-ci-um、po-TAS-si-um。让听者认出这个词的关键是重音,而不是单个音素。如果重音放错位置,即使每个辅音都发对了,老师也可能听不懂。
Three patterns cover most of the vocabulary you will meet in Year 9:
以下三种模式覆盖了你在 Year 9 会遇到的大部分词汇:
- Two-syllable nouns are usually stressed on the first syllable: 'A-tom, 'MOL-e-cule, 'BASE.
- Words ending in '-tion' or '-sion' are stressed on the syllable immediately before the ending: ti-'TRA-tion, com-bus-'TION, so-'LU-tion.
- Long adjectives ending in '-ic' are stressed just before '-ic': exo-'THER-mic, endo-'THER-mic, sul-'PHUR-ic.
- 双音节名词通常重读第一音节:'A-tom、'MOL-e-cule、'BASE。
- 以 -tion 或 -sion 结尾的词,重音紧挨后缀之前:ti-'TRA-tion、com-bus-'TION、so-'LU-tion。
- 以 -ic 结尾的长形容词,重音落在 -ic 之前:exo-'THER-mic、endo-'THER-mic、sul-'PHUR-ic。
There are famous exceptions you should simply memorise, because they appear constantly in lessons: mag-NE-si-um (not 'MAG-ne-si-um), a-LU-mi-ni-um, and the British a-LU-mi-ni-um versus the American a-LU-mi-num. Both versions are acceptable in CAIE answers as long as you are consistent and clear.
有些著名例外必须直接记住,因为它们在课堂上反复出现:mag-NE-si-um(不是 'MAG-ne-si-um)、a-LU-mi-ni-um,以及英式 a-LU-mi-ni-um 与美式 a-LU-mi-num。在 CAIE 答案中两种读法都可接受,只要保持一致、清晰即可。
Quick task: clap the syllables of ten element names while saying them aloud. Clapping forces you to place the stress deliberately.
小任务:边大声说出十个元素名称边拍手打音节,拍手会迫使你有意识地处理重音。
4. Using the IPA and Personal Re-spelling | 使用国际音标与个性化重新拼读
The International Phonetic Alphabet gives one symbol per sound, so a dictionary entry such as /ˈsəʊdiəm/ removes all guesswork. The most valuable symbols for chemistry students are the schwa /ə/, the voiceless 'th' /θ/, and the long /iː/ in chlorine and fluorine. Mispronouncing the schwa is the single most common reason why spoken chemistry sounds unnatural.
国际音标为每个音提供一个符号,因此词典条目 /ˈsəʊdiəm/ 能消除全部猜测。对化学学生最有价值的符号是央元音 schwa /ə/、清辅音 th /θ/,以及 chlorine、fluorine 中的长音 /iː/。schwa 读错,是化学口语听起来不自然的最常见原因。
If IPA feels intimidating, build your own re-spelling system and keep it in the margin of your notes. It only has to work for you.
如果国际音标让你觉得难,就建立自己的重新拼读系统,写在笔记页边。它只需要对你自己有效即可。
| Term / 术语 | IPA | My re-spelling / 我的拼读 |
| anhydrous | /ænˈhaɪdrəs/ | an-HIGH-druss |
| stoichiometry | /ˌstɔɪkiˈɒmətri/ | stoy-kee-OM-uh-tree |
| titration | /taɪˈtreɪʃn/ | tie-TRAY-shun |
| burette | /bjʊəˈret/ | byoo-RET |
Quick task: add IPA or a personal re-spelling to ten words in your glossary this week, and say each one five times while looking at the symbol.
小任务:本周为词汇表中十个词补上国际音标或个人拼读,并看着符号各读五遍。
5. Naming the Elements Aloud | 元素名称的朗读
Reading the periodic table aloud is the fastest way to build chemical fluency. The trap is that twelve common element symbols do not match their English names, and those are exactly the ones teachers use most often. Saying 'Fe' as 'fee' instead of 'iron' marks you immediately as an uncertain speaker.
大声朗读元素周期表是建立化学流畅度最快的方式。陷阱在于有十二个常见元素符号与其英文名称并不对应,而这些恰恰是老师使用最频繁的。把 Fe 读成 "fee" 而不是 "iron",会立刻暴露你的口语不熟练。
Learn these symbol-name pairs as spoken pairs, not as written items:
请把这些“符号—名称”作为口语配对来记,而不是书面条目:
| Symbol | Name | Say it like / 读音提示 |
| Fe | iron | EYE-un |
| Cu | copper | KOP-uh |
| Pb | lead | led |
| Ag | silver | SIL-vuh |
| Sn | tin | tin |
| Hg | mercury | MUR-kyuh-ree |
| K | potassium | po-TASS-ee-um |
| Na | sodium | SO-dee-um |
Two further names cause trouble. Phosphorus is FOS-fuh-russ, with the stress at the front, and sulphur is SUL-fuh in British English (sulfur in American spelling). Practise saying the element name and its symbol together, for example 'iron, Fe', so the link becomes automatic.
还有两个名称容易出错:phosphorus 读 FOS-fuh-russ,重音在前;sulphur 在英式英语中读 SUL-fuh(美式拼写为 sulfur)。练习时把元素名称与符号连在一起说,例如 "iron, Fe",让这种联结变得自动化。
Quick task: point at random symbols in the periodic table and say the full element name within two seconds. Time yourself.
小任务:随机指周期表上的符号,在两秒内说出完整元素名称,并计时。
6. Compound Naming Rules and How to Say Them | 化合物命名规则及其读法
Compound names in CAIE follow a strict order: the metal or positive ion comes first, the negative ion second, exactly as in the formula. Spoken chemistry keeps this order, so 'copper two sulphate' for CuSO₄ and 'iron three oxide' for Fe₂O₃ are perfectly understandable in speech, though in writing you should use the full forms copper(II) sulphate and iron(III) oxide.
CAIE 中化合物命名遵循严格顺序:金属或正离子在前,负离子在后,与化学式顺序一致。口语化学也保持这一顺序,因此 CuSO₄ 说成 "copper two sulphate"、Fe₂O₃ 说成 "iron three oxide" 在口语中完全可以理解;但书面表达应使用完整形式 copper(II) sulphate 与 iron(III) oxide。
Key spoken rules to internalise:
必须内化的关键口语规则:
- Metal plus non-metal takes the suffix -ide: sodium chloride, magnesium oxide.
- Metal plus a polyatomic ion containing oxygen usually takes -ate: calcium carbonate, magnesium nitrate.
- When the metal has variable valency, say the Roman numeral aloud: copper(II), iron(III), lead(IV).
- For two non-metals, the prefix tells you the number: carbon dioxide, sulphur trioxide, dinitrogen tetroxide.
- Acids ending in -ic form salts ending in -ate: sulphuric acid gives sulphates; hydrochloric acid gives chlorides.
- 金属加非金属用后缀 -ide:sodium chloride、magnesium oxide。
- 金属加含氧多原子离子通常用 -ate:calcium carbonate、magnesium nitrate。
- 金属具有可变价态时,要读出罗马数字:copper(II)、iron(III)、lead(IV)。
- 两种非金属组成时,前缀表示个数:carbon dioxide、sulphur trioxide、dinitrogen tetroxide。
- 以 -ic 结尾的酸生成的盐以 -ate 结尾:sulphuric acid 生成 sulphates;hydrochloric acid 生成 chlorides。
Pay attention to the endings when listening. 'Sulphate' and 'sulphide' differ by one sound and by one oxygen atom, so a missed ending can change a whole equation. Likewise, 'nitrate' and 'nitrite' are different substances with different formulae.
听的时候要特别注意词尾。"Sulphate" 与 "sulphide" 只差一个音、一个氧原子,听漏词尾就可能改变整个方程式。同样,nitrate 与 nitrite 是不同物质,化学式也不同。
Quick task: close your book and say the full name of these formulae aloud: NaCl, MgO, CaCO₃, Fe₂O₃, CO₂, H₂SO₄.
小任务:合上书本,大声说出下列化学式的完整名称:NaCl、MgO、CaCO₃、Fe₂O₃、CO₂、H₂SO₄。
7. Common Laboratory Instructions You Must Recognise | 必须听懂的常见实验指令
Practical lessons are conducted at speed, and instructions are given as imperatives. You need instant recognition rather than translation. The verbs below appear in nearly every Year 9 practical, and each one implies a different technique.
实验课节奏很快,指令以祈使句形式给出。你需要的是瞬间识别,而不是翻译。下列动词几乎出现在每个 Year 9 实验中,每个都对应不同的操作技术。
| Instruction / 指令 | What you must do / 你要做什么 |
| Add 5 cm³ of dilute acid to the test tube. | Measure the volume, then pour. / 量取体积后倒入。 |
| Heat the mixture gently. | Use a low Bunsen flame and move the tube. / 用小火并移动试管。 |
| Swirl the flask to mix. | Circular motion, do not shake. / 画圈摇动,不要上下振摇。 |
| Filter the mixture. | Use filter paper and a funnel. / 用滤纸和漏斗。 |
| Decant the liquid. | Pour off the top layer carefully. / 小心倒出上层液体。 |
| Record your observations. | Write colour, state, gas, temperature change. / 记录颜色、状态、气体、温度变化。 |
Safety instructions deserve special listening attention because they are short and often given once: 'wear goggles', 'tie back long hair', 'point the test tube away from everyone', 'do not return unused chemicals to the bottle', 'wash your hands before leaving'. If you miss one, ask immediately rather than guess.
安全指令需要格外专注地听,因为它们简短、往往只说一次:"wear goggles"、"tie back long hair"、"point the test tube away from everyone"、"do not return unused chemicals to the bottle"、"wash your hands before leaving"。若漏听任何一条,请当场询问,不要靠猜。
Quick task: listen to your teacher's next demonstration without writing anything, then write the method from memory in five numbered steps.
小任务:下次老师演示时先不要记录,凭记忆用五个编号步骤写出方法。
8. Listening Drills: Training Your Ear for Chemistry | 听力训练:培养化学耳朵
Listening in chemistry is not passive. You must catch numbers, units, chemical names and conditions simultaneously, then convert them into symbols. Train the four sub-skills separately before combining them, because each fails for a different reason.
化学听力不是被动接收。你必须同时捕捉数字、单位、化学品名称和条件,再转换为符号。建议先分别训练四项子技能,再综合运用,因为每一项失败的原因都不同。
