📚 Year 9 Cambridge PE: Summer Bridge & Preparation |
Starting Year 9 Cambridge Physical Education means building a stronger link between practical performance and the theory behind movement, fitness and health. This summer bridge guide helps you revisit key ideas from earlier years and introduces the topics that will shape your lessons, so you feel confident and prepared from the very first warm-up.
1. Understanding the Year 9 PE Curriculum |
The Year 9 Cambridge PE curriculum focuses on applying skills in more complex game situations, analysing personal performance and understanding how the body responds to exercise. You will move from simply 'doing' sport to thinking about why certain techniques and training methods work.
Lessons will include invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, athletics, and health-related fitness. Alongside practical sessions, you will study short theoretical units that prepare you for IGCSE PE, covering topics such as fitness components, training principles and basic anatomy.
2. Components of Fitness |
Fitness is divided into health-related and skill-related components. Health-related components include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. These directly affect your overall wellbeing and ability to carry out daily activities.
Skill-related components such as agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed are more important for specific sports. A basketball player needs agility and coordination, while a sprinter relies heavily on speed and power.
3. Health-Related vs. Skill-Related Fitness |
The table below summarises the key components you need to know for Year 9. Being able to define and give examples of each will help you analyse performance and design simple training sessions.
| Muscular endurance – repeated contractions 肌肉耐力 – 重复收缩能力 | Coordination – using two or more body parts smoothly 协调性 – 流畅地使用两个或多个身体部位 |
| Flexibility – range of motion around a joint
| Body composition – ratio of fat to lean mass 身体成分 – 脂肪与瘦体重的比例 | Reaction time – time between stimulus and response 反应时间 – 从刺激到做出反应的时间 |
Notice that some activities develop several components at once. Swimming, for example, builds cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and flexibility, while also demanding coordination and balance.
4. Principles of Training (FITT) | 训练原则 (FITT 原则)
To improve any component of fitness, training must follow the FITT principle: Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. Frequency is how often you train per week. Intensity refers to how hard you work, often measured by heart rate or perceived exertion.
Time means the duration of each session, and type describes the kind of exercise you do, such as continuous running for cardiovascular endurance or weight training for muscular strength. Applying FITT allows you to plan progressive overload safely.
Progressive overload means gradually increasing the demands on your body. For instance, if you can run for 15 minutes comfortably, you might increase your time to 18 minutes next week while keeping intensity the same.
5. Warm-Up and Cool-Down Routines |
A proper warm-up has three phases: a gentle pulse raiser, followed by dynamic stretching and then sport-specific drills. The pulse raiser gradually increases heart rate and blood flow to muscles, reducing the risk of injury.
Dynamic stretching involves moving joints through their full range of motion, such as leg swings and arm circles. Static stretching, where you hold a stretch without movement, is better suited to the cool-down because muscles are already warm and more elastic.
The cool-down helps your body return to its resting state gradually. Gentle jogging or walking followed by static stretches can clear waste products like lactic acid and reduce muscle soreness. Remember to hold each stretch for at least 15-30 seconds without bouncing.
6. Basic Movement Analysis: Levers in the Body |
Levers help us understand how bones and muscles create movement. Every lever has a fulcrum (pivot), an effort (force applied by muscles) and a load (resistance, often body weight or an object). Year 9 introduces three classes of lever found in the human body.
A first-class lever has the fulcrum between effort and load. An example is the neck nodding movement: the atlanto-occipital joint acts as the fulcrum, neck muscles provide effort and the weight of the head is the load.
Second-class levers have the load between fulcrum and effort. Standing on tiptoes demonstrates this: the ball of the foot is the fulcrum, body weight is the load between fulcrum and the effort provided by calf muscles. Third-class levers are most common in the body, with effort between fulcrum and load. A bicep curl is a classic example: the elbow is the fulcrum, the bicep muscle applies effort and the weight in your hand is the load.
1st class: Fulcrum–Effort–Load (F–E–L) 2nd class: Fulcrum–Load–Effort (F–L–E) 3rd class: Fulcrum–Effort–Load (F–E–L arrangement but with effort in middle)
7. Energy Systems and Basic Nutrition |
Your body uses two main energy systems to fuel exercise. The aerobic system uses oxygen to break down carbohydrates and fats, providing energy for longer, steady activities like distance running. The anaerobic system works without oxygen and supplies quick bursts of energy for high-intensity efforts lasting up to about two minutes.
Good nutrition supports both systems. Carbohydrates are your body's preferred fuel, especially for high-intensity work. Proteins help repair and build muscle tissue, while fats supply energy for low-intensity, long-duration exercise. Water is essential to regulate body temperature and transport nutrients.
Year 9 students should understand the concept of a balanced plate: roughly half vegetables and fruit, one-quarter whole grains, and one-quarter lean protein. Pre-exercise snacks like a banana or whole-wheat toast can top up glycogen stores without causing stomach discomfort.
8. Injury Prevention and Safety |
Preventing injuries starts with using the correct equipment, checking the playing area for hazards and following rules. Wearing shin guards in football, using non-slip footwear in the sports hall and removing jewellery are all simple but vital safety steps.
If a minor injury like a sprain does occur, the PRICE protocol helps manage it: Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Protect the area from further harm, rest it to allow healing, apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 15–20 minutes every few hours, use a bandage for compression, and elevate the limb to reduce swelling.
Always warm up thoroughly before training.
Use correct technique when lifting or throwing.
Listen to your body and rest when you feel pain – not just fatigue.
9. Teamwork, Communication and Fair Play |
In Year 9, you are expected to lead warm-ups, organise small-sided games and encourage teammates. Effective communication includes clear verbal instructions, positive body language and the ability to listen to others' ideas.
Fair play goes beyond following the written rules. It means respecting officials, opponents and the spirit of the game. Shaking hands after a match, accepting a referee’s decision without argument and acknowledging an opponent's good effort all demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Cooperation in team sports often involves deciding who takes on specific roles, such as defence, attack or support. Discussing tactics calmly and staying positive even when the team is losing shows maturity and helps everyone improve.
10. Introduction to Invasion Game Tactics |
Invasion games like football, basketball, hockey and netball require teams to attack an opponent's territory while defending their own. Simple attacking tactics include maintaining width to stretch the defence, using quick passing to create space and supporting the player with the ball.
Defensive tactics focus on reducing space, marking opponents and intercepting passes. A basic principle is to stay between your opponent and the goal you are defending. When your team regains possession, the transition from defence to attack must be fast to catch the opposition off guard.
Understanding simple formations, such as 2-3-1 in basketball or 4-3-3 in football, helps you see how positions relate to space. You will practise these patterns in small-sided games and learn to adjust them based on the opponent's strategy.
11. The Cardiorespiratory System During Exercise |
When you start exercising, your heart rate and breathing rate increase to deliver more oxygen to working muscles. The heart pumps faster and stroke volume (the amount of blood ejected per beat) rises, leading to a higher cardiac output.
x stroke volume (SV). During sustained aerobic activity, your heart and lungs adapt by becoming more efficient. Regular training can lower your resting heart rate because a stronger heart pumps more blood with each beat.
At the lungs, gaseous exchange takes place in the alveoli: oxygen moves into the blood while carbon dioxide is removed. Understanding this basic pathway will help you later in IGCSE PE when studying aerobic and anaerobic respiration in greater depth.
12. Setting SMART Goals for PE | 设定体育课的SMART目标
Goal setting is a powerful tool to improve motivation and track progress. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Instead of saying "I want to get better at running", a SMART goal would be "I will reduce my 1.5 km run time from 8 minutes 30 seconds to under 8 minutes in six weeks by running three times per week."
In Year 9 PE, you might set a skill goal, such as achieving 8 successful chest passes in a row without error, or a fitness goal about completing a flexibility routine every day. Reviewing progress regularly helps you adjust your training plan and keeps you focused.
Write your goal down and share it with a teacher or coach.
Break long-term goals into short-term steps.
Celebrate small successes to stay motivated.
