在剑桥九年级音乐课程中撰写论文,需要把分析思维、清晰结构与准确的音乐语言结合起来。本文提供一套完整的写作框架与两篇完整范文,帮助你自信地应对任何写作题目——无论是描述一首作品的音乐元素,还是比较同一作品的两种演绎。遵循这些指导,你将学会如何组织答案、使用 PEEL 段落、精准运用音乐术语,并避开每年都在让考生失分的那些常见陷阱。
1. Introduction to Music Essay Writing | 音乐论文写作介绍
At Year 9 level, Cambridge music essays typically ask you to describe, explain, compare or evaluate music using the seven elements: melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre, dynamics and structure. These are short to medium length responses, normally 200-400 words, that test your aural perception as well as your knowledge of the Western classical tradition and of world music. Understanding the format is the first step to success.
在九年级阶段,剑桥音乐论文通常要求你围绕七大音乐元素——旋律、节奏、和声、织体、音色、力度与结构——去描述、解释、比较或评价音乐。这类答案属于短到中等篇幅,一般在 200 至 400 词之间,既考查你的听觉感知,也考查你对西方古典传统与世界音乐的知识。理解答题格式是成功的第一步。
Marks are awarded for accurate observation rather than for elegant prose. A plain sentence such as "the melody rises by step and is then repeated a third higher" earns far more credit than a vague claim that the music is "nice and interesting". Every statement you make should be anchored to something a listener can actually hear in the recording.
分数给的是准确的观察,而不是华丽的文笔。一句朴素的"旋律级进上行,随后提高三度重复",远比笼统地说音乐"好听、有趣"更能得分。你的每一个说法都应该锚定在听众真正能在录音中听到的东西上。
You should also expect the paper to be cumulative. A single question may ask you to link a composer, a genre, an instrument and a historical period inside one paragraph, so build your vocabulary early and revise it in themed sets rather than as a random word list.
同时要意识到,整份试卷是累积性的。同一道题目可能要求你在一个段落里把作曲家、体裁、乐器与历史时期串联起来。因此要尽早积累词汇,并且按主题成组复习,而不是零散地背一张词表。
2. Understanding the Question and Command Words | 理解题目与指令词
Before you write a single note of your answer, identify the command word. 'Describe' asks for what you hear; 'explain' requires reasons and effects; 'compare' demands both similarities and differences; 'evaluate' involves making a supported judgement. Underline the focus of the question, for example 'melody and rhythm', so that you never drift off topic.
在动笔之前,先找出题目中的指令词。"Describe(描述)"要求你写出听到了什么;"explain(解释)"要求给出原因与效果;"compare(比较)"要求同时写出相同点与不同点;"evaluate(评价)"则要求作出有依据的判断。把题目的关注点划出来,例如"旋律与节奏",这样你就不会跑题。
| Command word | What the examiner wants | 中文说明 |
| Describe | Accurate features of the music, element by element | 逐项写出音乐元素的准确特征 |
| Explain | Why the composer chose a feature and what effect it creates | 说明作曲家为何这样处理,产生什么效果 |
| Compare | Direct similarities and differences, ideally in the same sentence | 直接对照异同,最好在同一句中对比 |
| Evaluate | A judgement supported by specific musical evidence | 用具体音乐证据支撑的判断 |
Notice also the difference between a question about a set work, which tests recall and analysis of a specific piece, and a question on an unfamiliar extract, which tests transferable listening skills. If the extract is unfamiliar, describe what you genuinely hear instead of guessing the composer, and never invent a title you are unsure of.
还要注意题目之间的区别:关于指定作品的题目考查你对具体曲目的记忆与分析;关于陌生音频片段的题目则考查可迁移的聆听能力。如果片段是陌生的,就如实描述你听到的内容,不要猜测作曲家,也绝不编造一个自己没有把握的曲名。
3. The PEEL Paragraph Framework | PEEL 段落框架
PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explain, Link. It is the single most useful structure in a music essay because it forces every opinion to be supported by something audible and then connected back to the question.
PEEL 指的是 Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explain(解释)、Link(回扣)。这是音乐论文中最实用的一个结构,因为它迫使每一个观点都必须有可听辨的证据支撑,并最终回扣到题目上。
PEEL = Point → Evidence → Explain (effect) → Link back to the question
A model PEEL paragraph might read: "The opening of the movement is monophonic (Point). The strings play the four-note motif in bare unison with no accompaniment (Evidence). Because nothing supports the line harmonically, the motif sounds stark and exposed, and the sudden silence after the long note creates tension (Explain). This economy of texture makes the movement's later homophonic and contrapuntal passages sound all the more dramatic (Link)."
一个标准的 PEEL 段落可以这样写:"该乐章开头是单声织体(观点)。弦乐以毫无伴奏的纯齐奏奏出那个四音动机(证据)。由于没有任何声部在下方作和声支撑,这一线条听起来冷峻而暴露,而长音之后的骤然静默又制造了张力(解释)。正是这种织体上的节制,使该乐章后来的主调与复调段落显得更加戏剧化(回扣)。"
Keep each paragraph to roughly four to six sentences. Long paragraphs lose the examiner, while single-sentence paragraphs look like notes rather than an argument. For a 200-word answer, three or four PEEL paragraphs are usually enough; for a longer comparison, aim for five.
每段控制在大约四到六句。段落过长会让阅卷人迷失方向,而单句成段又会让答案像是笔记而不是论证。一篇 200 词的答案,通常三到四段 PEEL 就足够;若是较长的比较题,则可以写到五段。
4. Using Musical Terminology Accurately | 准确使用音乐术语
Terminology is the currency of the subject. Terms such as 'syncopation', 'sequence', 'pedal note', 'conjunct', 'disjunct', 'homophonic', 'polyphonic', 'antiphonal' and 'tessitura' signal to the examiner that you are hearing structure rather than merely reacting to a mood.
术语是这门学科的通行货币。诸如 syncopation(切分)、sequence(模进)、pedal note(持续音)、conjunct(级进)、disjunct(跳进)、homophonic(主调)、polyphonic(复调)、antiphonal(交替应答)、tessitura(常用音域)这类词汇,会让阅卷人看出你听到的是结构,而不只是被情绪带着走。
Accuracy matters more than quantity. Writing that a piece is "polyphonic" when two parts move in the same rhythm is an error that cancels out the credit you gained by using the word. Similarly, 'crescendo' describes a gradual increase, while 'accelerando' describes a gradual speed-up, and mixing them up is a common and costly slip.
准确比数量更重要。如果两个声部以同一节奏移动,你却写"复调",这个错误会抵消你使用该词所得到的分数。同样,crescendo 指力度逐渐增强,accelerando 指速度逐渐加快,把两者混淆是一种常见且代价不小的失误。
Use a three-column vocabulary log: term, definition, and one piece where you have actually heard it. Revising a term together with a concrete example makes it far more likely to surface in an exam answer than a term learnt in isolation.
建议使用三栏式的术语笔记本:术语、定义,以及你确实听到过它的那一首作品。把术语与具体实例捆绑复习,在考场上被想起的概率远高于孤立地背诵单词。
5. Structuring the Whole Essay | 全篇结构:引言、主体、结论
Your introduction should do two things and no more: name the work or works, and state what you will focus on. Two sentences are enough. "This essay compares two recordings of the Aria from Bach's Goldberg Variations, concentrating on tempo, articulation and balance between the hands." Do not retell the history of the composer here.
引言只需做好两件事,且不超过这两件:点明作品,说明你的论述重点。两三句就够,例如"本文比较巴赫《哥德堡变奏曲》咏叹调的两个录音版本,重点在速度、连断处理与双手平衡。"不要在引言里讲述作曲家的生平历史。
The body should follow the order of the question, not the order of the piece. If the question asks about melody and then texture, give melody its own PEEL paragraph before you discuss texture. Signposting words such as 'firstly', 'by contrast' and 'as a result' make the argument easy to follow and cost you nothing.
主体部分应按照题目的顺序推进,而不是按照作品的顺序。如果题目先问旋律、后问织体,那就先给旋律一个完整的 PEEL 段落,然后再讨论织体。像 firstly(首先)、by contrast(相反)、as a result(因此)这类路标词能让论证清晰易读,而且几乎不占字数。
The conclusion should answer the question directly rather than summarise every point again. One or two sentences of judgement, linked to the evidence you have just given, is stronger than five sentences of repetition.
结论应当直接回答题目,而不是把每个要点再复述一遍。一两句与前述证据直接挂钩的判断,比五句重复更有力量。
6. Describing Music: The Elements Checklist | 描述音乐:元素清单法
When you are asked to describe a piece you do not know, work through the elements systematically. An examiner scanning your answer wants to see breadth first and depth second, so it is better to cover five elements briefly than to exhaust two and ignore the rest.
当题目要求描述一首你不熟悉的作品时,请系统地逐项过元素。阅卷人扫读你的答案时,首先看的是覆盖面,其次才是深度。因此,简要涉及五个元素,比把两个元素写透而完全忽略其余要好得多。
| Element | Useful adjectives and phrases | 中文提示 |
| Melody | conjunct, disjunct, scalic, triadic, chromatic, ornamented | 级进、跳进、音阶式、分解和弦式、半音、装饰性 |
| Rhythm | syncopated, dotted, driving, lilting, free, metrical | 切分、附点、推进感、摇曳、自由、有节拍 |
| Harmony | diatonic, chromatic, dissonant, perfect cadence, pedal | 自然音、半音、不协和、完全终止、持续音 |
| Texture | monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, antiphonal, layered | 单声、主调、复调、交替、分层 |
| Dynamics | terraced, crescendo, sudden subito piano, sustained | 阶梯式、渐强、突弱、持续 |
Always give a location with your description. "The texture becomes homophonic in the second subject" is a musical observation; "the texture is homophonic" floating with no reference point is only half an answer.
描述时一定要附上位置信息。"织体在第二主题处变为主调式"是音乐观察;而一句没有参照点的"织体是主调式"只算半个答案。
7. Comparing Two Interpretations | 比较两种演绎
Comparison questions reward sentence-level contrast. Instead of describing recording A and then recording B in two separate blocks, pair them: "The 1955 reading takes the Aria at roughly 60 beats per minute, whereas the 1981 reading is closer to 40, which turns a dance into a meditation."
比较题奖励的是句子层面的对照。不要先整块描述 A 版本、再整块描述 B 版本,而应当成对呈现:"1955 年的演绎把咏叹调弹到大约每分钟 60 拍,而 1981 年的版本接近 40 拍,这就把一首舞曲变成了沉思。"
Limit yourself to three or four comparison points and go deep on each: tempo, articulation, ornamentation, balance, dynamics, and period-instrument versus modern-instrument choices are the most productive categories.
把比较点限制在三到四个,并在每一点上深入:速度、连断处理、装饰音、声部平衡、力度,以及本真乐器与现代乐器的选择,是最高产的几类观察角度。
Never write that one performance is simply "better". Say what the performer does and what effect it produces, then let the listener judge. Line notes about accuracy are fine, but they should not replace musical commentary.
绝不要只写某一个演绎"更好"。要写出演奏者做了什么、产生了什么效果,然后把评判留给听者。指出演奏失误是可以的,但不应替代音乐层面的评述。
8. Evaluating and Making Judgements | 评价与做出判断
Evaluation is the highest-order skill in the syllabus, and it depends on criteria. Before you judge, decide what the music is trying to do. A march is not failing because it is repetitive; it is failing only if the repetition is ineffective in context.
评价是课程大纲中最高阶的能力,而它依赖评判标准。在作出判断前,先弄清这段音乐想要达成什么。进行曲并不因为重复而失败,只有当这种重复在具体语境中失去效果时才算是失败。
Use hedged language appropriately: 'this suggests', 'the effect is', 'one could argue that'. Hedging is not weakness; it shows that you understand interpretation is a matter of evidence rather than of absolute fact.
恰当地使用留有余地的表达:this suggests(这说明)、the effect is(其效果是)、one could argue that(可以认为)。留有余地并不等于软弱,它表明你明白诠释是基于证据的判断,而不是绝对事实。
A strong evaluative sentence names the feature, names the effect and names the reason: "The sudden shift to the relative major at bar 34 provides relief after the chromatic tension of the preceding passage, and it is this contrast that makes the return of the minor key feel inevitable rather than merely repeated."
一句有力的评价应当同时点出特征、效果与原因:"第 34 小节突然转向关系大调,为前面半音张力之后的段落提供了舒缓,正是这种对比,使小调的回归听上去是必然的,而不只是简单重复。"
9. Writing About World Music and Context | 世界音乐与背景写作
When the question concerns a non-Western tradition, accuracy of naming matters enormously. Use the correct instrument names, for example sitar, tabla, gamelan, koto, djembe, and take care not to describe an Indian raga using Western functional harmony terms that do not apply.
当题目涉及非西方传统音乐时,名称的准确性极为重要。要使用正确的乐器名称,例如 sitar(西塔琴)、tabla(塔布拉鼓)、gamelan(甘美兰)、koto(日本筝)、djembe(金贝鼓),同时注意不要用并不适用的西方功能和声术语去描述印度拉格。
Contextual points earn credit when they are tied to sound. Saying that a piece is "ceremonial" is only useful if you can add that the slow, unmetered opening and the gong strokes create that ceremonial function. Context without sound is a history answer, not a music answer.
当背景信息与声音挂钩时才能得分。说一首作品"具有仪式性"只在你能补充"缓慢而无节拍的起句与锣声共同营造出这种仪式功能"时才有用。脱离声音的背景是历史答案,而不是音乐答案。
Be precise about pitch systems too: raga, tala, drone, microtonal inflection, call and response, and cyclic structure are the terms most frequently rewarded in this section of the course.
对音高体系也要精确:raga(拉格)、tala(塔拉)、drone(持续低音)、微分音润饰、呼应式对唱、循环结构,是这一部分最常被给分的术语。
10. Model Essay 1: Describing a Set Work | 范文一:描述一首指定作品
Question: Describe the melody, rhythm and texture of the opening of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, first movement, and explain how these features create tension.
题目:描述贝多芬《c 小调第五交响曲》第一乐章开头的旋律、节奏与织体,并解释这些特征如何制造张力。
Beethoven's Fifth Symphony opens with one of the most recognisable motifs in Western music. The four-note figure consists of a repeated note followed by a descending major third, and it is stated twice before the music continues. The melody is disjunct and extremely compressed, using only two pitches in its basic form.
贝多芬《第五交响曲》以西方音乐中最易辨识的动机之一开场。这个四音动机由一个重复音加一个下行大三度构成,在音乐继续之前被陈述了两次。旋律是跳进的,而且极度压缩,基本形态只用了两个音高。
The rhythm is the driving force. The short-short-short-long pattern creates an urgent, march-like momentum, and Beethoven places a rest after the final note so that the silence becomes part of the motif rather than a gap between phrases. Because the pattern is repeated at the same pitch and then sequenced downwards, the listener feels insistence rather than development.
节奏是驱动全曲的力量。短短短长的组合制造出急促的、近乎进行曲的推进感,而贝多芬在末音之后安排了一个休止,使静默成为动机本身的一部分,而不是乐句之间的空隙。由于该音型先在同音高上重复、随后向下模进,听者感受到的是执拗的坚持,而不是发展。
The opening texture is monophonic: the strings play in bare unison with no harmonic support, and the horns double the line in the final statement. This absence of accompaniment makes the motif sound exposed and threatening. As the exposition proceeds the texture thickens into homophony, with the strings carrying the motif above sustained horn notes, and the movement later moves towards contrapuntal writing in the development. The dynamics reinforce every one of these changes, with a forte opening, a sudden piano at the lyrical second subject, and a forceful fortissimo at the close of the exposition.
开头的织体是单声的:弦乐以毫无和声支撑的纯齐奏演奏,圆号在最后一次陈述中与线条重叠。伴奏的缺席使这一动机听起来暴露而充满威胁。随着呈示部推进,织体加厚为主调式,弦乐在圆号持续音之上奏出动机,随后乐章在展开部转向复调写法。力度强化了上述每一次变化:开头为强奏,抒情的第二主题处突转为弱奏,呈示部结尾则是强有力的极强奏。
All of these features work together. The compressed pitch range, the insistent rhythm and the exposed unison texture deny the listener any sense of resolution, so that the move to the relative major in the second subject arrives as genuine relief.
这些特征共同起作用。被压缩的音域、执拗的节奏与暴露的齐奏织体,让听者
