📚 Year 9 WJEC Sociology: Formula and Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | WJEC
Welcome to your compact revision guide for Year 9 WJEC Sociology. While sociology does not feature equations in the same way as physics or chemistry, this handbook presents key concepts, theories and research tools as 'formulas' and 'theorems' to help you remember the building blocks of society. Each section breaks down essential relationships into simple models that capture how social forces work. Use this guide to master definitions, understand perspectives and feel confident in your assessments.
1. The 'Equation' of Sociology |
Sociology studies the relationship between individual actions (agency) and the social structures that shape our lives. Think of it as an equation: individuals are influenced by society, but they also have the power to change it. The core model captures this two‑way interaction.
Individual Agency + Social Structure → Social Reality
This 'formula' reminds us that neither individual choices nor social forces alone can explain society. For example, a student's decision to work hard is shaped by family background and school expectations, but the student's effort can also challenge stereotypes and gradually change their social environment.
2. The Socialisation Formula |
Socialisation is the lifelong process through which we learn the culture of our society. The formula below highlights the two main stages that together form our social selves.
Primary Socialisation + Secondary Socialisation = The Socialised Self
Primary socialisation occurs in early childhood, mainly within the family, where we learn language, basic norms and values. Secondary socialisation continues throughout life through agents such as schools, peer groups, the media and workplaces, teaching us new roles and expectations.
Key agents of socialisation:
- Family – primary agent, intimate relationships
- School – formal rules, hidden curriculum
- Peers – shared interests, conformity
- Media – values, stereotypes, role models
3. Cultural Components: A Theorem |
Culture consists of everything that makes up a society's way of life. The basic components can be expressed as a theorem that builds up from material and non‑material elements. Non‑material culture is sometimes broken down further into its own smaller 'components'.
Culture = Material Culture + Non‑material Culture
Non‑material Culture = Values + Norms + Beliefs + Language + Knowledge
Material culture refers to physical objects like clothing, technology, buildings and art. Non‑material culture includes abstract concepts: values (what is considered good or desirable), norms (rules guiding behaviour), beliefs, language and symbols that give meaning to our world. Together these components shape our identity and daily life.
4. Social Stratification: The Inequality Relationship |
Society is divided into layers based on factors such as class, gender and ethnicity. These divisions create systems of advantage and disadvantage. The stratification relationship can be summarised as a multi‑factor model.
Stratification = Social Class + Gender + Ethnicity + Age (+ other factors)
Each factor interacts to shape a person's life chances. For example, a working‑class woman from an ethnic minority background may face multiple layers of inequality — this is known as intersectionality. Opportunities in education, health and work are deeply affected by where a person sits in these strata.
Social mobility can be thought of as movement up or down these layers:
Social Mobility = Upward Mobility (gaining status) + Downward Mobility (losing status)
5. Family Structures and Functions |
The family is a key social institution. Sociologists examine different family types and the functions they perform. The diversity of family forms can be represented in a simple structural formula.
Nuclear Family + Extended Family + Lone‑parent Family + Reconstituted Family + Same‑sex Family = Family Diversity
Functionalism sees two essential functions: primary socialisation of children and the stabilisation of adult personalities. Marxism argues the family serves capitalism by passing on wealth and providing unpaid domestic labour. Feminism highlights how the family often reproduces patriarchal power relations.
The table below contrasts the three main perspectives on the family:
| Perspective | Key Idea | Functions / Criticism |
|---|---|---|
| Functionalism | Family meets society's needs | Primary socialisation, economic support, emotional care. Ignores conflict and inequality. |
