📚 A-level Course Selection Guide | A-level
Choosing A-level subjects is one of the first genuinely consequential academic decisions a student ever makes. The subjects you pick shape which university courses you can apply for, the skills you build over two years, and often the direction of your early career. This guide brings together the advice that matters most: know yourself, know your goals, then check the facts before you commit.
1. What A-levels Are and Why the Choice Matters | A-level
A-level stands for Advanced Level. It is the main academic qualification taken by students aged 16 to 18 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and it is offered by international schools around the world, including many in China. It has long been popular with international students precisely because it allows deep specialisation and builds a solid foundation for university study.
Its reputation rests on depth rather than breadth. Instead of studying eight or ten subjects at a moderate level, A-level students normally take three or four subjects and study each to a standard comparable to a first-year university module. Assessment is mostly by written examination at the end of the two-year course, with practical endorsements in science subjects.
That depth is exactly why subject choice carries so much weight. Because the course is short and specialised, there is little room to correct a wrong combination later. A student who spends Year 12 studying the wrong three subjects may discover at the end of it that their target degree is closed to them.
The problem is that the menu is enormous. Most schools offer twenty or more A-level subjects, from Mathematics and Further Mathematics to Psychology, Business, Art, Computer Science, Chinese, Geography and Theatre Studies. For a 15 or 16 year old facing that list for the first time, some confusion is completely normal.
2. Start With Interests and Career Direction |
The first step in choosing A-levels is honest self-assessment. Everyone has different interests and different strengths, and finding subjects that genuinely fit you matters more than following a ranking or copying a friend's timetable.
If you enjoy science and can picture yourself in medicine, engineering, pharmacy or a related field, then Physics, Chemistry and Biology are natural choices. Combinations such as Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics open the door to medicine and biomedical science; Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry suit engineering and physical sciences.
If language, humanities and social sciences attract you more, then English Literature, History, Politics or Economics may be a better match. These subjects develop extended writing, argumentation and source analysis, which are exactly the skills that law, journalism, international relations and public policy degrees demand.
A useful exercise is to write down three answers: what subject do I read about voluntarily, what task makes time pass quickly for me, and what kind of problem do I want to be paid to solve at 25? Where the three answers overlap, you usually find a subject worth taking.
3. Assess Your Academic Strengths and Foundation |
Interest alone is not enough. You also need to assess your academic strength and your existing knowledge base, because A-level subjects differ sharply in difficulty and in the prior knowledge they assume.
Some subjects are mathematically heavy and unforgiving of gaps. A-level Physics assumes confident algebra, trigonometry and graph work; A-level Chemistry requires secure mole calculations and structural reasoning; A-level Economics increasingly uses quantitative methods. If your mathematics is shaky, these subjects will feel like running uphill from the first week.
On the other hand, if you perform strongly and with real enthusiasm in a subject, taking it at A-level means you will settle in faster, cover content more confidently and have more time left for the harder topics. Strong prior performance is one of the best predictors of A-level success.
If you are genuinely unsure about your level, do not guess. Talk to your subject teachers, your parents, and your school's university guidance counsellor. Ask them a specific question, such as: "On a scale of one to ten, how ready am I for A-level Chemistry?" Specific questions produce useful answers.
4. Core Academic Subjects and Facilitating Subjects |
Universities, especially selective ones, tend to look for at least two subjects from a group traditionally called facilitating subjects or core academic subjects. The Russell Group's Informed Choices guidance popularised the list, and although the terminology has been revised, the underlying logic still holds.
That group generally includes Mathematics, Further Mathematics, English Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Modern Languages and Classical Languages. These subjects are considered strong preparation because they require sustained reasoning, extended writing or quantitative problem solving.
- Mathematics and Further Mathematics: the single most versatile pair for science, engineering, economics and computer science degrees.
- Chemistry: effectively compulsory for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and most pharmacy courses.
- Physics: essential for engineering, physics and many architecture courses.
- English Literature and History: the classic preparation for law, humanities and social sciences.
- Modern Languages: valuable for linguistics, area studies and international careers.
That does not mean non-listed subjects are worthless. Psychology, Economics, Business, Computer Science and Art are all respected and can be excellent choices. The point is simply to avoid building an entire timetable out of subjects that universities may treat as less academically demanding.
5. Check University Course Requirements Before You Choose |
Different universities, and different courses within the same university, can have very different A-level requirements. The safest approach is to check the specific entry requirements for the specific course, on the university's own website, before you finalise your choices.
Most requirements fall into three categories. Essential subjects must be taken, or your application will not be considered. Recommended subjects strengthen an application but are not compulsory. Helpful subjects give useful background but carry no formal weight in admissions.
Some well-known examples are worth remembering, although details change and must always be verified:
- Medicine: Chemistry is almost always essential, usually alongside at least one more science or Mathematics.
- Engineering: Mathematics and Physics are typically required, with Further Mathematics recommended for the most competitive courses.
- Economics: Mathematics is frequently required or strongly preferred at top departments.
- Computer Science: Mathematics is usually required, and Further Mathematics or Computer Science may be recommended.
- Law: rarely has a compulsory subject, but essay-based subjects such as History or English Literature are strong preparation.
Getting this right pays off immediately. If your chosen subjects match the entry requirements, the transition into your degree is smoother and you start university properly prepared instead of catching up.
6. Typical Subject Combinations for Popular Pathways |
The table below shows common, well-tested combinations. It is a starting point for discussion with your teachers, not a set of rules, since requirements differ from university to university and change year by year.
|---|---|---|
| Medicine 医学 | Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Physics | Chemistry is nearly always essential 化学几乎必选 |
| Engineering 工程 | Mathematics, Physics, Further Mathematics or Chemistry | Further Maths helps for top departments 进阶数学助力顶尖院系 |
| Economics 经济 | Mathematics, Economics, Further Mathematics or History | Maths matters more than Economics 数学比经济更关键 |
| Law 法律 | English Literature, History, Politics or Economics | Essay subjects build the right skills 论述型科目训练核心能力 |
| Computer Science 计算机 | Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics | Maths is the gatekeeper 数学是门槛 |
| Art and Design 艺术设计 | Art, plus one essay subject and one further subject | Portfolio quality dominates 作品集最关键 |
Notice that Mathematics appears in five of the six rows. It is the most frequently required A-level subject in the world, which is why dropping it too early closes more doors than almost any other decision.
7. How Many Subjects? AS, A2, EPQ and Workload | 选几门?AS、A2、EPQ 与课业量
Most students take three A-levels, and that is enough for the overwhelming majority of university courses in the UK. Four subjects are common for stronger students, and are sometimes expected at the most competitive universities, but four is not automatically better than three.
Historically, A-level was split into AS in the first year and A2 in the second, with AS counting towards the final grade. Under the current linear structure in England, the AS is a separate qualification and the full A-level is examined at the end of two years. Some schools still enter students for AS exams; others do not.
The Extended Project Qualification, or EPQ, is a separate research project worth roughly half an A-level in UCAS points. It develops independent research and academic writing skills, and some universities make reduced offers to students who achieve a strong EPQ grade.
Workload is the real constraint. Three A-levels with genuine depth, plus an EPQ, plus wider reading for your personal statement, is already a full schedule. Adding a fourth subject you dislike, simply for appearance, usually lowers all four grades rather than raising them.
8. A-level Compared With IB and BTEC | A-level 与 IB、BTEC 的对比
A-level is not the only route into university, and comparing it honestly with alternatives helps you confirm that it is the right fit. The IB Diploma requires six subjects, including a compulsory second language and a mathematics course, plus Theory of Knowledge and an extended essay.
BTEC qualifications are vocational and assessed largely through coursework rather than final examinations. They suit students who prefer continuous assessment and applied learning, and they are accepted for many, though not all, university courses.
- A-level: maximum specialisation, exam-based, best for students with clear strengths. A-level:
- IB: maximum breadth, mixed assessment, best for students who want to keep many options open. IB:
- BTEC: maximum application, coursework-based, best for hands-on learners with a defined vocational aim. BTEC:
If you already know roughly what you want to study, and you are comfortable with final examinations, A-level is usually the most efficient route to a competitive offer.
9. Common Mistakes and Misconceptions |
Most poor choices come from a small number of predictable errors. Recognising them in advance is the cheapest way to avoid them.
- Choosing subjects only because they seem easy to score in.
- Copying a friend's timetable so you can sit together.
- Dropping Mathematics at 16, then discovering at 18 that three target courses require it.
- Assuming a subject must match the degree exactly. Law, medicine and many others accept a range of subjects beyond the obvious ones.
- Leaving the decision until the last week of Year 11, when option blocks may already be full.
- Judging a subject on one test result instead of a term of consistent performance.
One more misconception is worth naming: there is no universally "best" combination. There is only the best combination for a specific student with specific goals and a specific set of university requirements.
10. A Practical Timeline for Choosing |
Choice is far easier when it is spread across a year instead of compressed into a fortnight. The schedule below is a workable pattern used by many schools.
|---|---|
| Year 10 结束前 | Read widely; note which subjects you enjoy and why 广泛阅读,记录你喜欢哪些科目以及原因 |
| Year 11 上学期 | Attend options evenings; draft a long list of six subjects 参加选课说明会,列出六门科目的长名单 |
| Year 11 寒假 | Check entry requirements on five university websites 在五所大学官网核查入学要求 |
| Year 11 下学期 | Talk to teachers and counsellors; narrow to four 与老师和顾问沟通,缩减到四门 |
| Year 12 前三周 | Use any permitted switching window early 若有换课窗口,尽早使用 |
If your school allows a change in the first few weeks of Year 12, use it immediately rather than waiting until half term. Every week of delay means content you must catch up on privately.
11. Talk to Teachers, Advisers and Current Students |
No guide, including this one, can replace a conversation with someone who has watched you work. Subject teachers know your habits, your exam technique and your capacity for independent study far better than any online tool.
