1. What is Economics? |
Economics is the social science that studies how people use scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. It is not just about money; it deals with decision-making at every level, from an individual choosing between two snacks to a government deciding how to spend tax revenue. Economists try to answer questions about what to produce, how to produce it, and who gets to consume it.
The subject is split into two main branches. Microeconomics focuses on individual markets and economic agents such as households and firms. Macroeconomics looks at the economy as a whole, examining issues like inflation, unemployment and economic growth. Both branches will appear throughout your Cambridge Economics course.
2. Scarcity: The Heart of Economics |
Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It arises because resources are limited while human wants are virtually infinite. Even in wealthy countries, scarcity exists because people always desire more or better goods and services. Understanding scarcity helps you see why we cannot have everything we want and why choices must be made.
Scarcity forces societies to answer three key questions: What goods and services should be produced? How should they be produced? For whom should they be produced? Every economy, whether it is a small village or a large nation, must find a way to allocate its scarce resources among competing uses.
3. Opportunity Cost |
When you make a choice, you give up the next best alternative. That sacrifice is called opportunity cost. For example, if you spend an hour studying Economics instead of playing video games, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have gained from gaming. Economists always consider opportunity cost when evaluating decisions.
Opportunity cost is not measured only in money. It includes time, effort and other resources that could have been used elsewhere. A government that builds a new hospital might have to cut back on building new schools; the opportunity cost of the hospital is the education benefit lost. Recognising these trade-offs is at the core of economic reasoning.
4. Factors of Production |
To produce goods and services, an economy uses resources called factors of production. These are traditionally grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources such as minerals, water and forests. Labour refers to the human effort, both physical and mental, involved in production.
Capital consists of manufactured goods that are used to make other goods, such as machinery, tools and factories. Enterprise is the willingness to take risks and combine the other three factors to create a business. In the Cambridge syllabus, understanding how these factors earn rewards - rent, wages, interest and profit - will become important.
5. The Basic Economic Problem and Choice |
The basic economic problem asks how we can satisfy unlimited wants with limited resources. Because scarcity exists, individuals and societies must constantly make choices. These choices involve trade-offs, and the concept of opportunity cost helps us measure what is being sacrificed. Your Year 9 course will keep returning to this central idea.
Even the simplest daily decisions can be examined through this lens. Choosing to bring a packed lunch rather than buying food at the canteen involves weighing financial cost, nutrition and time. On a national level, policymakers use cost-benefit analysis to decide between spending on healthcare or defence, always aware of the opportunity cost.
6. Introduction to Demand |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a period of time. The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as the price of a product rises, the quantity demanded falls. This inverse relationship is one of the most reliable patterns in economics.
A simple demand schedule might look like this:
Price (£) | Quantity Demanded (units)
10 | 20
8 | 30
6 | 45
4 | 60
2 | 80
10 | 20
8 | 30
6 | 45
4 | 60
2 | 80
Notice how lower prices lead to higher quantity demanded. This occurs for two main reasons: the income effect (consumers feel richer when prices fall) and the substitution effect (consumers switch from relatively more expensive alternatives). Factors other than price, such as income, tastes and advertising, can shift the entire demand curve.
7. Introduction to Supply |
Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices. The law of supply says that, ceteris paribus, as the price increases, the quantity supplied also increases. Producers are motivated by the profit incentive to produce more when they can sell at higher prices.
A typical supply schedule shows a positive relationship:
Price (£) | Quantity Supplied (units)
10 | 80
8 | 65
6 | 50
4 | 35
2 | 20
10 | 80
8 | 65
6 | 50
4 | 35
2 | 20
Higher prices make it profitable for firms to use more resources or bring new producers into the market. Supply can be affected by changes in production costs, technology, taxes and the number of sellers. When these factors change, the supply curve shifts to the left (decrease) or right (increase).
8. Market Equilibrium |
Market equilibrium occurs at the price where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. At this point, there is no excess demand (shortage) or excess supply (surplus). The equilibrium price, also called the market-clearing price, is where the plans of buyers and sellers align. In a free market, prices tend to move towards equilibrium naturally.
If the market price is above equilibrium, a surplus occurs; unsold goods prompt firms to cut prices. If the price is below equilibrium, a shortage develops, and consumers bid prices up. This invisible hand mechanism was famously described by Adam Smith and remains central to understanding how markets allocate resources efficiently.
9. Economic Systems |
An economic system is the method a society uses to distribute resources and answer the three basic economic questions. The main types are market economies, planned (command) economies and mixed economies. Each system has different decision-makers and operates with different degrees of government involvement.
| Feature | Market Economy | Planned Economy | Mixed Economy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decision maker | Consumers and firms | Government | Both private and public sectors |
| Price mechanism | Strong role | Weak role | Mixed role |
| Examples | USA (mostly) | North Korea | UK, Germany, China |
In a market economy, the price mechanism coordinates buying and selling decisions through the interaction of supply and demand. In a planned economy, a central authority makes all major decisions, often leading to inefficiencies and shortages. Most real-world economies are mixed, using market signals alongside government regulations and public services.
10. Money and Its Functions |
Money is anything that is generally accepted as a medium of exchange. It serves four key functions: a medium of exchange (avoiding the need for barter), a unit of account (measuring value), a store of value (holding purchasing power over time) and a standard of deferred payment (enabling borrowing and lending).
Without money, trade would be extremely inefficient. Imagine trying to swap your Maths textbook for a sandwich; you would need to find someone who wants a Maths book and has a spare sandwich. This is called the double coincidence of wants. Money solves this problem and allows specialisation, which raises productivity in an economy.
11. Micro vs Macro: Two Lenses on the Economy |
Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual households and firms, and the workings of specific markets. Topics include the pricing of products, labour markets and the effects of taxes on buyers and sellers. It helps answer questions like, "Why has the price of cinema tickets risen?" or "How does a minimum wage affect employment?"
Macroeconomics, on the other hand, looks at the big picture. It deals with aggregate indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP), the unemployment rate and the rate of inflation. Macroeconomic policies, like changing interest rates, affect the entire economy. Both perspectives are essential, and the Cambridge syllabus builds them gradually from Year 9 upwards.
12. How to Prepare for Year 9 Economics | 如何为 Year 9 经济做准备
Start by reading the news with an economic lens. Look for articles about inflation, trade or government budgets, and ask yourself, "What is the opportunity cost here?" or "How might supply and demand explain this change?" Keeping a simple vocabulary journal of terms like scarcity, equilibrium and factors of production will help you recall them easily.
Try to apply concepts to your own life. When you receive pocket money, think about what you are giving up by saving it rather than spending it. Discuss with friends or family why a popular video game might be priced higher during the launch week. These everyday reflections turn abstract ideas into lasting understanding.
Finally, use this bridging guide as a checklist. Make sure you can explain scarcity, opportunity cost, the factors of production, how supply and demand determine price, and the differences between economic systems. If you can do that, you will walk into your first Year 9 Economics lesson with real confidence.
