1. Law of Conservation of Mass |
The total mass of reactants before a chemical reaction is always equal to the total mass of products after the reaction. No atoms are created or destroyed; they are simply rearranged.
Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products
This principle was established by Antoine Lavoisier and is the foundation for balancing chemical equations.
2. Relative Atomic Mass & Atomic Structure |
Atoms consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) of an element is the average mass of its atoms compared to 1/12 the mass of a carbon‑12 atom.
Relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) ≈ number of protons + number of neutrons
| Particle | Relative charge | Relative mass |
|---|---|---|
| Proton
| Neutron
In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
3. Chemical Formulae & Valency |
A chemical formula shows the types and numbers of atoms in a substance. Valency (combining power) tells us how many bonds an atom can form.
To write the formula of an ionic compound, use the ‘cross‑over’ method: swap the valencies of the two ions and write them as subscripts. Simplify if possible.
Valency of Aₓ⁺ and Bᵧ⁻ → formula AᵧBₓ
A⁺ B⁻ → 化学式 A₁B₁,直接写作 AB
Common valencies: Group 1 elements = +1, Group 2 = +2, Group 17 (halogens) = –1, Group 16 (oxygen) = – ve variable valencies but Year 9 usually focuses on simple examples like Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺.
4. Writing Balanced Equations |
A balanced symbol equation follows the Law of Conservation of Mass. You must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow.
atoms → add coefficients (big numbers) to balance → add state symbols (s), (l), (g), (aq).
State symbols: (s) = solid, (l) = liquid, (g) = gas, (aq) = aqueous (dissolved in water).
Example: hydrogen + oxygen → water. 2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l).
2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l)。
5. States of Matter & Changes |
Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas. Changes of state are physical changes and no new substances are formed.
| Change | Name | Energy change |
|---|---|---|
The energy of the particles increases during melting and boiling; it decreases during freezing and condensing.
6. Acids, Bases & pH | 酸、碱与pH
Acids release H⁺ ions in water; bases release OH⁻ ions in water. Alkalis are soluble bases. pH is a measure of the concentration of H⁺ ions.
pH scale: 0 → acidic, 7 → neutral, 14 → alkaline
Universal indicator and pH probes are used to measure pH. Acids turn blue litmus red; alkalis turn red litmus blue.
Common laboratory acids: hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), nitric acid (HNO₃). Common alkalis: sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH).
7. Neutralisation |
Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt and water. The H⁺ ions from the acid combine with OH⁻ ions from the base to produce water molecules.
Acid + Base → Salt + Water
Ionic equation for neutralisation: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l).
: hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium chloride + water. HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O。
8. Reactivity Series |
The reactivity series lists metals in order of their reactivity. A more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compound.
Potassium > Sodium > Calcium > Magnesium > Aluminium > (Carbon) > Zinc > Iron > Lead > (Hydrogen) > Copper > Silver > Gold
solution of a less reactive metal. Example: zinc + copper sulfate → zinc sulfate + copper.
9. Rate of Reaction |
The rate of a chemical reaction measures how quickly reactants are used up or products are formed.
Rate of reaction = Change in amount (or concentration) of reactant or product ÷ Time taken
Factors that increase the rate: higher temperature, greater concentration of solutions, larger surface area of solids, and the presence of a catalyst. Collision theory explains these effects: successful collisions must occur with enough energy (activation energy) and proper orientation.
10. Separation Techniques Principles |
Mixtures can be separated by physical means, relying on differences in physical properties.
Used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. Based on particle size.
Separates a soluble solid from a solution by evaporating the solvent.
Separates a solvent from a solution; the solvent vapour is condensed and collected.
Separates two or more liquids with different boiling points.
- Paper chromatography 纸色谱: ty in a solvent. Rf value = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent front.
The Rf value is a ratio used to identify components in a mixture. Each pure substance has a characteristic Rf under given conditions.
11. Periodic Table Patterns |
The modern periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Periods are horizontal rows; groups are vertical columns containing elements with similar chemical properties.
Group 1 (alkali metals): one electron in outer shell, very reactive, reactivity increases down the group. Group 7 (halogens): seven electrons in outer shell, reactive non‑metals, reactivity decreases down the group. Group 0 (noble gases): full outer shell, unreactive.
Number of outer electrons = group number (for Groups 1–2 and 13–18 after subtracting 10)
Metals are found on the left and centre of the table; non‑metals on the right. The staircase line separates them.
12. Bonding Types & Properties |
Atoms join together to achieve a full outer shell. Three main types of strong chemical bonding are studied: ionic, covalent, and metallic.
Transfer of electrons from metal to non‑metal; oppositely charged ions held together by electrostatic attraction. Giant ionic lattices have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.
Sharing of electrons between non‑metal atoms. Simple molecular substances (e.g., H₂O, CO₂) have low melting points and do not conduct electricity; giant covalent structures (e.g., diamond, SiO₂) have very high melting points.
Positive metal ions in a ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons. This explains why metals conduct electricity, are malleable, and ductile.
Properties such as melting point, boiling point, and electrical conductivity are directly linked to the structure and bonding of a substance.
