1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy derives from the Greek words 'philo' (love) and 'sophia' (wisdom), meaning 'love of wisdom'. It is an activity rather than a fixed body of knowledge: philosophers ask 'why?' and 'how do we know?', challenging assumptions and seeking clarity through reason.
In SQA Philosophy, you will learn to construct and analyse arguments, distinguish between valid and sound reasoning, and engage with classic philosophical problems. This subject complements RMPS (Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies) and develops skills highly valued across the curriculum.
2. Branches of Philosophy |
Philosophy is traditionally divided into several branches, each addressing different types of questions. The four main branches are metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and logic. Understanding these branches helps you categorise arguments and identify the focus of a philosophical text.
Metaphysics deals with the nature of reality, including questions about existence, time, free will, and the mind. Epistemology examines knowledge and belief: what it means to know something and how we justify our claims. Ethics, or moral philosophy, investigates right and wrong, good and bad. Logic provides the rules for valid reasoning and argument structure.
3. Logic and Argument |
Logic is the backbone of philosophical analysis. An argument is a set of statements where some (premises) are offered in support of another (the conclusion). In SQA Philosophy, you must be able to identify premises and conclusions, and evaluate whether the argument is valid, sound, or fallacious.
A valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. A sound argument is valid and has all true premises. For example: 'All humans are mortal (premise 1), Socrates is human (premise 2), therefore Socrates is mortal (conclusion).' This is both valid and sound. Common fallacies include ad hominem (attacking the person instead of the argument) and begging the question (assuming what you are trying to prove).
4. Epistemology: Theory of Knowledge |
Epistemology asks what knowledge is and how we acquire it. The classic definition, known as justified true belief (JTB), states that a person knows a proposition if they believe it, if it is true, and if they have justification for believing it. For example, you know it is raining if you believe it, it is actually raining, and you have reliable evidence (like seeing rain outside).
However, the JTB definition faces challenges, the most famous being the Gettier problem. Gettier cases demonstrate situations where someone has a justified true belief but still seems not to know. For instance, you might see a clock showing 3:00 and believe it is 3:00, and it is 3:00, but the clock is broken and just happens to be right. Many philosophers argue this is not genuine knowledge, leading to debates about whether we need a fourth condition, such as reliability or no false lemmas.
5. Ethics: Moral Philosophy |
Ethics examines how we should live and what makes actions right or wrong. Three major ethical theories are introduced in SQA Philosophy: utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Each provides a different framework for moral decision-making.
Utilitarianism, associated with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, asserts that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Deontology, most famously defended by Immanuel Kant, holds that some actions are morally obligatory regardless of consequences, based on duty and universalisable maxims (the Categorical Imperative). Virtue ethics, inspired by Aristotle, focuses on the character of the moral agent rather than specific actions, emphasising virtues like courage, honesty, and compassion.
6. The Problem of Evil |
The problem of evil is a classic challenge in the philosophy of religion, questioning how an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good God can coexist with suffering and evil in the world. If God is willing to prevent evil but cannot, He is not omnipotent; if He can but is not willing, He is not benevolent; if He is both able and willing, why does evil exist?
Responses include the free will defence, which argues that God gave humans free will, and that moral evil results from our misuse of it; a world with free beings is better than one without. Another is the soul-making theodicy, suggesting that suffering helps humans develop virtues and grow spiritually. Critics counter that this does not explain natural evil (e.g., earthquakes) or the disproportionate suffering of the innocent. In SQA exams, you are expected to explain these arguments and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
7. Free Will and Determinism |
The debate between free will and determinism is central to metaphysics and ethics. Determinism is the view that all events, including human choices, are causally determined by prior states. If determinism is true, can we be morally responsible for our actions?
Compatibilism argues that free will is compatible with determinism: freedom consists in acting according to your own desires without external coercion, even if those desires are determined. Hard determinism denies free will entirely and rejects moral responsibility as we normally understand it. Libertarianism (not the political view) insists that we have genuine free will and that determinism is false, often invoking indeterminacy at the quantum level or agent causation. In SQA Philosophy, you need to articulate these positions and consider their implications for justice and punishment.
8. The Mind-Body Problem |
The mind-body problem concerns the relationship between mental states (thoughts, feelings, consciousness) and physical states (brain processes, biology). Are the mind and body separate substances, or is the mind simply the brain? This question has profound implications for personal identity and the possibility of life after death.
Dualism, associated with René Descartes, holds that mind and
