1. Introduction to Physics & Measurement |
Physics is the study of matter, energy and the interactions between them. Accurate measurements and the use of standard units are at the heart of every experiment. In SQA Physics, we rely on the International System of Units (SI), where length is measured in metres (m), mass in kilograms (kg) and time in seconds (s).
s. Using these prefixes correctly avoids costly errors in calculations and practical work.
| Prefix | Symbol | Factor |
| kilo | k | 10³ |
| centi | c | 10⁻² |
| milli | m | 10⁻³ |
| micro | μ | 10⁻⁶ |
10⁸ m/s for the speed of light. This skill will be used throughout your course when handling very big or very small quantities.
2. Describing Motion: Speed and Velocity |
Motion is one of the first topics you explore in SQA Physics. Speed is a scalar quantity – it tells you how fast an object is moving, but not the direction. Velocity, on the other hand, is a vector: it includes both speed and direction. For example, 5 m/s north is a velocity.
The average speed of an object can be calculated using the equation:
v = d / t
where v is speed, d is distance and t or time. An athlete who runs 100 m in 12.5 s has an average speed of 100 / 12.5 = 8.0 m/s.
On a distance–time graph, a straight line represents constant speed, while a steeper slope indicates a higher speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary.
3. Acceleration and Forces |
Acceleration tells you how quickly velocity changes. It is also a vector quantity and is measured in metres per second squared (m/s²). If a car increases its velocity from 0 to 20 m/s in 4 seconds, its acceleration is:
a = (v – u) / t
where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity and t is the time taken. So a = (20 – 0) / 4 = 5 m/s².
因此 a = (20 – 0) / 4 = 5 m/s²。
A deceleration (negative acceleration) occurs when an object slows down. Forces are pushes or pulls that can change an object's speed, shape or direction. In SQA Physics, you learn to draw free body diagrams to show the forces acting on an object, such as weight, friction, normal reaction and thrust.
4. Newton’s Laws in Action |
Newton’s three laws of motion are central to dynamics. The first law states that an object remains at rest or moves at constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This explains why a passenger lurches forward when a bus brakes suddenly – inertia resists the change in motion.
nt force (F) is measured in newtons (N), mass (m) in kg and acceleration (a) in m/s². This means a larger force produces a larger acceleration, and a more massive object accelerates less for the same force.
Newton’s third law tells us that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When you push against a wall, the wall pushes back with equal force. These forces act on different objects, so they do not cancel each other out.
5. Energy Types and Transformations |
Energy comes in many forms: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, chemical, thermal (heat), sound, light and electrical. The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one type to another. This is a key idea in all SQA Physics topics.
When a cyclist freewheels down a hill, gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. However, some energy is always dissipated as heat due to friction and air resistance. In exams, you may be asked to identify the main energy changes in a system, such as a lamp turning electrical energy into light and heat.
Gravitational potential energy can be calculated using Ep and g = 10 N/kg on Earth (SQA often uses 10 for simplicity). Kinetic energy is found by Ek = ½ m v².
6. Introduction to Electricity |
Electricity is all about the flow of charge through a circuit. Current (I) is the rate of flow of charge and is measured in amperes (A). In a series circuit the current is the same at all points. In a parallel circuit, the current splits at junctions and the sum of the branch currents equals the total current leaving the battery.
Voltage (V), also called potential difference, is the energy transferred per unit charge. It is measured in volts (V). The voltage across components in series adds up to the supply voltage, while in a parallel circuit each branch receives the full supply voltage.
7. Ohm’s Law and Simple Circuits |
Resistance (R) opposes the flow of current and is measured in ohms (Ω). Ohm’s law relates these three quantities:
V = I R
This simple equation is incredibly powerful. For a fixed resistor, if you double the voltage, the current doubles, provided temperature remains constant. A filament lamp does not obey Ohm’s law because its resistance increases as it gets hotter.
You will also meet series and parallel resistor networks. In series, the total resistance is the sum: Rtotal sistance is lower than the smallest individual resistance, and you may later use the reciprocal formula.
Practical work often involves building circuits with ammeters (connected in series) and voltmeters (connected in parallel) to measure current and voltage and then calculating resistance.
8. Wave Properties and Sound |
Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. There are two main types: transverse waves (e.g. light, water ripples) where the oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer, and longitudinal waves (e.g. sound) where the oscillation is parallel.
The key quantities are frequency (f, in hertz), wavelength (λ, in metres), amplitude and wave speed (v). The wave equation links them:
v = f λ
Sound waves are caused by vibrating objects and travel fastest in solids, then liquids, and slowest in gases. Humans can hear frequencies roughly from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Ultrasound (above 20 kHz) has many applications in medicine and industry.
9. The Electromagnetic Spectrum |
rtest wavelength, the groups are: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.
As wavelength decreases, frequency increases, and the energy carried by the wave also increases. This explains why gamma rays are so penetrating and dangerous, while radio waves are low-energy and used safely for communication.
Each part of the spectrum has practical uses and risks. Microwaves are used in cooking and satellite communication; infrared is used in thermal imaging and remote controls; ultraviolet can cause skin cancer but is used in sterilisation; X-rays are vital for medical imaging.
10. Our Place in Space |
Space physics introduces you to the structure of the universe. Our Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. The Sun is a medium-sized star that produces energy through nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium.
Gravity keeps planets in orbit around the Sun, and moons around planets. The force of gravity depends on the masses involved and the distance between them. A larger mass or a smaller distance results in a stronger gravitational pull.
You will also learn about the life cycle of stars, from nebulae to main sequence, then to red giant or supergiant stages, and finally white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes. These ideas help explain how elements heavier than iron were spread across the universe.
11. Practical Skills: Graphs and Equations |
Physics relies heavily on the ability to interpret and construct graphs. A line of best fit on a scatter graph allows you to see the relationship between variables. Common relationships include direct proportion (a straight line through the origin) and inverse proportion (a curve that approaches the axes).
correctly. Practice changing the subject of formulas such as v = f λ into f = v / λ, or Ep = m g h into m = Ep / (g h).
A key skill is handling errors in measurements. Take multiple readings and calculate a mean to reduce random errors. Systematic errors, such as a zero error on an ammeter, must be identified and accounted for.

- Label axes with quantity and unit, e.g. time / s.
