📚 Year 9 CIE Business Exam Skills and Marking Criteria | Year 9 CIE
Taking business exams requires more than just memorising facts. You need to understand exactly what the examiner expects, use the right command words, and structure your answers to secure marks across knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.
1. Understanding Command Words |
Command words tell you the type of response the examiner wants. Misreading a command word can cost valuable marks even if you know the content.
| Command Word | 中文 | What You Must Do | Typical Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identify / State | 识别 / 陈述 | Name or select a correct factor, term or piece of data. | 1-2 |
| Define | 定义 | Give the precise meaning of a term. | 2 |
| Describe | 描述 | Write about the features or characteristics; no cause-effect needed. | 2-4 |
| Explain | 解释 | Show how or why something happens, using chains of reasoning. | 4-6 |
| Analyse | 分析 | Examine causes, impacts or relationships in depth. | 6-8 |
| Evaluate / Discuss | 评价 / 讨论 | Weigh up both sides and make a supported judgement. | 8-12 |
| Recommend / Justify | 建议 / 论证 | Propose a course of action with reasons why it is the best. | 6-10 |
When you see a question, circle the command word first. If it says 'Explain', do not just describe – you must use connectors like 'because' or 'as a result' to build a logical chain.
2. Demonstrating Knowledge |
Knowledge marks are the easiest to pick up, yet many students leave them on the table. Knowledge means showing you know key business terms, concepts and facts.
Start every answer with a precise definition or a clear statement of the concept. For example, 'Market share is the percentage of total sales in a market held by one business.'
Keep definitions concise. Two to three lines are enough for a 2-mark knowledge question. Over-explaining wastes time and adds no extra credit.
Use subject-specific vocabulary such as 'added value', 'lean production', 'economies of scale' or 'current liabilities'. Examiners look for this technical language.
3. Applying to the Context |
Application means linking your knowledge to the specific business in the case study or question stem. Never write a generic textbook answer.
Read the stimulus material carefully. Pick out names, numbers, products, locations or problems mentioned. Then weave them into your response: 'Since XYZ Ltd produces luxury chocolates, its target market is likely high-income consumers.'
Using quoted figures earns application marks. For instance, 'With a 15% increase in raw material costs, the business will face lower profit margins unless it raises prices.'
Avoid simply repeating the case study facts as a separate paragraph. Application must be blended with knowledge and analysis.
4. Developing Analysis |
Analysis questions ask you to explain causes, effects or relationships. This is where you show the examiner you can think logically about business problems.
Build a chain of reasoning: ' net profit → The business might have less finance for expansion → Growth could slow down.' Each arrow is a 'because' or 'therefore' in your writing.
For a 6-mark 'explain' question, aim for three well-developed chains rather than six isolated points. Depth beats breadth in analysis.
Use linking phrases consistently: 'This leads to...', 'As a result...', 'Consequently...', 'This may cause...'. They make your analytical thinking crystal clear to the examiner.
5. Making an Evaluation |
Evaluation is the highest-order skill. You need to weigh arguments, compare alternatives and reach a justified conclusion.
Start by stating both advantages and disadvantages of a decision. For instance, when discussing whether a firm should lower prices, mention that 'lower prices may increase sales volume, but could reduce profit per unit and damage brand image'.
Your judgement must include a 'depends on' factor. Say when the recommendation would work best and when it might fail. For example, 'This strategy depends on the price elasticity of demand for the product. If demand is price elastic, a price cut could raise total revenue.'
Short-term versus long-term trade-offs are powerful evaluative tools. 'In the short term, reducing training costs saves money, but in the long term it may lead to lower productivity and higher staff turnover.'
Always end an evaluate question with a clear, supported recommendation. Use the evidence you have already discussed to justify why your chosen option is the best.
6. Managing Your Time | 时间管理
Good time management can boost your grade by ensuring you attempt all questions and allocate words according to marks available.
A simple rule: give roughly 1.5 minutes per mark. For a 2-mark define question, spend no more than 3 minutes. For a 10-mark evaluate question, allow about 15 minutes.
Start with the questions you find easiest. This builds confidence and secures marks early. Leave the toughest evaluation question until you have banked the rest of your targets.
Stick to the clock. If you are running out of time on a longer question, quickly sketch an outline of key points and a simple judgement. Partial answer still earns marks.
7. Avoiding Common Mistakes |
Students often lose marks by repeating the question, writing irrelevant background, or listing points without explanation.
Do not restate the question as your first sentence. Jump straight into the key term or direct response. The examiner knows the question.
Avoid long introductions. For an 'evaluate' question, one sentence to set the context is enough. Then move into the first argument.
Writing bullet points without connecting logic is a fatal error in analysis and evaluation. Always explain how each point links to the next.
Check subject vocabulary. Mixing up 'profit' and 'cash' or 'market share' and 'market size' shows weak knowledge and can lead to inaccurate analysis.
8. Decoding the Mark Scheme |
CIE Business mark schemes are usually 'levels of response' based. Marks are not simply added for each correct point; examiners place the whole answer into a level based on overall quality.
Level 1 (1-2 marks) for knowledge: simple statements or definitions with no development.
Level 2 (3-4 marks) for application: knowledge linked to the scenario but analysis is shallow or incomplete.
Level 3 (5-6 marks) for analysis: clear cause-and-effect chains developed from the context.
Level 4 (7-8 marks) for evaluation: a balanced discussion with a supported judgement and a 'depends on' factor.
Understanding these levels helps you aim high. To reach Level 4, you must go beyond one-sided arguments and include a final, weighted decision.
9. Structuring Long-Answer Questions |
For 'analyse' and 'evaluate' questions, a clear paragraph structure ensures you do not drift off topic and makes the examiner's job easier.
Use the PEEL method: Point – State your idea. Evidence – Use case data. Explanation – Show the business consequence. Link – Connect back to the question or forward to the next point.
For a 10-mark evaluation, plan three strong arguments (e.g. two for, one against) plus a conclusion. Write each argument in its own paragraph, then write a separate conclusion paragraph.
In the conclusion, do not introduce new facts. Synthesise the discussion and say clearly which option you recommend and why, given the specific circumstances in the case.
10. Mastering Case Study Reading |
Before writing anything, read the case study and highlight numbers, names, problems and special terms. These will become the application in your answers.
Pause and ask: 'What type of business is this? What are its objectives? What challenges is it facing?' Your answers should always relate back to these big questions.
When a question asks 'Referring to the case study...', you must directly quote or closely paraphrase evidence from the text. Without explicit reference, you lose application marks.
If two businesses are compared in the case, note key differences straightaway on your question paper. Drawing a quick table can save time when you later need to compare them in an evaluation.
