📚 Statistical Report Writing for Year 9 CCEA: Framework and Model Answers | CCEA
Writing a statistical report is one of the most distinctive skills in the CCEA Year 9 Statistics curriculum. Unlike a typical maths exercise, where the answer is simply right or wrong, a statistical investigation asks you to choose a question, design a fair way of collecting data, process that data accurately, and then explain in words what the numbers actually mean. The whole process is built around the Statistical Enquiry Cycle, usually remembered as PPDAC - Problem, Plan, Data, Analysis, Conclusion. Mastering this framework not only secures the top marks in your coursework and gives you a genuine head start for GCSE Statistics and beyond.
1. Understanding the Statistical Enquiry Cycle |
The CCEA specification emphasises the Statistical Enquiry Cycle as the backbone of every investigation. It consists of five main stages: Problem (ask a question and form a hypothesis), Plan (decide what data to collect and how to collect it), Data (collect the data carefully and organise it), Analysis (calculate statistics and construct diagrams), and Conclusion (interpret the results, refer back to the hypothesis, and evaluate the process). Some classrooms shorten the cycle to POS, but the full five-stage version is what your written report must show. The cycle is not a straight line either: if your sample turns out to be biased or your data contains too many blanks, you go back and revise your plan before continuing.
| Stage | 阶段 | What you do | 你要做的事 | What appears in the report | 报告中体现的内容 |
|---|---|---|
| Data | 数据 | Collect, record, clean and group the data | 收集、记录、清洗并分组数据 | A tidy table and tally chart | 整洁的表格与频数表 |
| Conclusion | 结论 | Answer the hypothesis and evaluate | 回应假设并进行评价 | Two or three paragraphs of discussion | 两到三段讨论文字 |
A useful habit is to write the five stage headings in your report before you start collecting anything. The structure then forces you to think about what evidence you will need, and it makes the final writing far easier because every section already has a purpose.
2. How the Report Is Marked |
CCEA rewards more than correct arithmetic. Marks are spread across the whole enquiry, and a report with perfect calculations but no explanation will lose more marks than students expect. Broadly, the marks fall into four bands: planning the investigation, collecting and recording data, processing and representing data, and interpreting and discussing results. Quality of written communication is assessed throughout, which means spelling, punctuation, grammar and clear use of statistical vocabulary all matter.
|---|---|
| Planning | 计划 | A testable hypothesis, a justified sampling method, awareness of bias | 可检验的假设、有理有据的抽样方法、对偏差的清醒认识 |
| Interpretation | 结果解读 | Referring back to the hypothesis, quoting figures, sensible evaluation | 回扣假设、引用具体数字、评价合理 |
Always answer the question that was asked, not the question you wish had been asked. If your hypothesis was about screen time and sleep, every paragraph of your conclusion should be about screen time and sleep.
3. Stage 1 - Problem: Writing a Testable Hypothesis |
A hypothesis is a precise, measurable statement, not an opinion. "Football is better than rugby" cannot be investigated; "Year 9 students at our school can estimate a 30-second interval more accurately than a 10-second interval" can. A strong Year 9 hypothesis usually involves comparing two groups, or examining a relationship between two variables, and it names the population, the variables and the direction you expect.
Variables come in three types you must be able to name. Categorical (or qualitative) data falls into named groups, such as favourite subject or year group. Discrete data is counted in whole units, such as the number of siblings. Continuous data is measured and can take any value within a range, such as height in centimetres or time in seconds. Naming your variable type correctly is a small point that examiners notice immediately.
A good opening paragraph reads like this: "I want to find out whether Year 9 students who eat breakfast perform better in a mental arithmetic test than those who do not. My hypothesis is that students who ate breakfast will score, on average, at least 2 marks higher out of 20." Notice how the number in the hypothesis makes it measurable from the very start.
4. Stage 2 - Plan: Sampling and Fairness |
The plan stage is where most marks are quietly won or lost. You need to justify your sample size, choose and name a sampling method, and show that you understand what makes a sample biased. A simple random sample gives every member of the population an equal chance of selection, often achieved by numbering the population and using a random number generator. A systematic sample takes every tenth name from an alphabetical list. A stratified sample keeps the proportions of different groups the same as in the population. An opportunity (or convenience) sample simply uses whoever is nearby, and it is usually the weakest choice - though it is often honest to admit that time limits forced you to use it.
Sample size deserves a sentence of justification. Thirty students is a reasonable minimum for a Year 9 project, while ten is too few to support any conclusion. You should also decide whether you are using primary data, which you collect yourself, or secondary data, which already exists in a database or published report. Primary data is more reliable for your specific question, but secondary data is faster and can cover a longer time period.
Finally, design your recording sheet before you collect anything, and pilot it on two or three people. Questionnaire questions must avoid leading wording ("Do you agree that homework is too long?"), overlapping answer boxes ("0-1 hours, 1-2 hours, 2-3 hours" is ambiguous at the boundaries), and unnecessary open questions that are hard to analyse.
5. Stage 3 - Data: Collecting, Cleaning and Organising |
Collecting data sounds straightforward until you actually try it. Two rules keep you safe: record raw data exactly as measured or given, and always include units. If a student gives a height of "1.62", write "1.62 m" so that nobody later misreads it as 162 cm. Keep the raw data sheet, even in rough, because your teacher may ask to see it and because it lets you check any value you later doubt.
Cleaning the data is the step students skip and regret. Look for impossible values (a height of 272 cm or an age of 150), missing entries, duplicated rows, and answers that fall outside your categories. Decide openly what to do with each problem: remove the row, or mark it as "not stated" and report how many you removed. Outliers, such as a student who sleeps only three hours, should usually be kept but commented on, because deleting inconvenient data looks like cheating.
, and so on. Between five and eight groups is usually right for a sample of thirty to forty. Tally the raw data into the intervals first, then convert the tallies into frequencies, and check that the frequencies add up to your sample size before you move on.
6. Stage 4 - Analysis: Summary Statistics |
Analysis means turning raw numbers into a small set of measures that describe the data. You need one measure of average (mean, median or mode) and at least one measure of spread (range or interquartile range). Reporting an average without a measure of spread is one of the most common weaknesses in Year 9 reports, because two very different data sets can share the same mean.
Mean = Σx ÷ n Range = maximum − minimum
le value of the ordered list IQR = upper quartile − lower quartile
For an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values. For quartiles, split the ordered list into halves and take the median of each half; if the sample size is not a multiple of four, state clearly which convention you are using, because different textbooks differ slightly. The interquartile range is usually the better measure of spread when the data contains outliers, while the range is easier to calculate and easier to explain.
Where variables are paired, you can describe the relationship between them. Say whether the correlation is positive or negative and whether it is strong or weak, and always add the warning that correlation does not prove causation. At Year 9 you are not required to calculate a correlation coefficient, but you are expected to describe the pattern in words and support it with a scatter graph.
7. Choosing and Drawing Diagrams |
The diagram must match the data type. Using a pie chart for continuous data or a line graph for categorical data loses marks instantly, because the graph is claiming something the data cannot support. The table below summarises the standard choices for a Year 9 report.
| Diagram | 图表 | Best used for | 最适用于 |
|---|---|
| Pie chart | 饼图 | Showing proportions of a whole, few categories | 展示各部分占整体的比例,类别较少时 |
| Line graph | 折线图 | Change over time (time series) | 随时间的变化(时间序列) |
| Scatter graph | 散点图 | Relationship between two continuous variables | 两个连续变量之间的关系 |
| Box plot | 箱线图 | Comparing median and spread of two groups | 比较两组的集中趋势与离散程度 |
Every graph needs a title, both axes labelled with the variable name and the unit, and a sensible scale that uses most of the grid. Bars on a bar chart should be of equal width with equal gaps, and they must not touch. A histogram, by contrast, has bars that touch, because the class intervals are continuous. In a scatter graph, label the horizontal axis with the variable you controlled or measured first and the vertical axis with the response variable.
8. Stage 5 - Conclusion: Answering the Hypothesis |
The conclusion is not a description of the graph; it is an answer to the hypothesis. State clearly whether your hypothesis was supported, partially supported or not supported, and quote the evidence. Compare the key statistics side by side, for example: "The mean sleep on school nights for students using screens for less than three hours was 8.4 hours, compared with 7.2 hours for students using screens for three hours or more - a difference of 1.2 hours."
Good conclusions also mention the spread, not just the average. If one group has an interquartile range twice as large as the other, that tells the reader the group is far less consistent, and this is exactly the kind of comment that moves a report into the top band. Be honest about uncertainty: with a sample of forty students in one school, you cannot claim to speak for all Year 9 students in Northern Ireland. The phrase "based on this sample" is your friend.
9. Evaluation and Limitations |
Every report should end with an evaluation, and it must be specific rather than generic. "The sample was too small" is weak; "I only surveyed 19 boys because the Year 9 boys' football team was away on the day I collected data, so the male group may not represent Year 9 boys fairly" is strong, because it names the cause and explains the consequence.
Useful headings for your evaluation are: reliability (would repeating the investigation give similar results?), validity (did I actually measure what I intended to measure?), bias (who was left out of my sample?), and improvements (what would I change
