📚 Year 9 CCEA Media: Case Study Practice | Year 9 CCEA
In Year 9 CCEA Media Studies, case studies are at the heart of how you demonstrate understanding. Rather than simply describing a film, advert or website, you must apply key media concepts to explain how meanings are created. This article is a practical workout, guiding you step by step through a complete case study analysis. By the end, you will have a tried-and-tested method you can use in class, homework or the exam.
1. Understanding Media Case Studies |
A media case study focuses on one specific media text and deconstructs it using the core media framework. It asks not just 'what is shown?' but 'how' and 'why' it has been constructed in that way.
A case study is built on evidence. Every claim you make about meaning should be anchored to something you can actually point at in the text - a camera angle, a colour choice, a caption, a sound effect - and then explained. Without that anchor, your writing becomes opinion rather than analysis.
The difference between description and analysis looks simple, yet it is where most Year 9 students lose marks. Description answers 'what is there?'; analysis answers 'what does it do?'.
- Evidence first, judgement second. |
- Use accurate media terminology, not everyday words. |
- Always link back to meaning, effect or audience. |
2. Choosing Your Media Text |
The best case study texts are rich in detail. This could be a 30-second TV advert, a film poster, a magazine front cover or the opening sequence of a TV show. Pick a text you feel confident discussing and that clearly illustrates several key concepts.
Test a potential text with three quick questions: does it contain at least three different elements of media language? does it have a clear target audience? does it carry a recognisable set of values or messages? If you can answer yes to all three, the text will support a full case study.
Bear in mind that some exam boards, including CCEA, may set a text for you rather than letting you choose. In that situation you simply work with what you are given, so practise the method on unfamiliar texts as well as on favourites.
Avoid texts that are too long, too vague, or that you simply find boring. A tightly packed 30-second advert often gives you far more to write about than three minutes of a drama.
Media analysts often use the acronym MIGRAIN to remember the essential lenses. The table below outlines each element with a quick English and Chinese explanation.
| Concept | Definition /
|---|---|
| Media Language | The codes and conventions (camera angles, editing, colour, sound) used to create meaning. |
| Ideology | The values, beliefs and messages embedded in the text. |
| Genre | Shared conventions, templates and expectations that place a text in a category. |
| Representation | How the text constructs people, places, groups and issues. |
| Audience | Who the text is made for, how it targets them, and how they may respond. |
| Institutions | The companies, broadcasters, regulators and platforms behind the text. |
| Narrative | The way events are organised into a story: structure, conflict, roles and resolution. |
Do not mechanically apply all seven concepts to every text. Choose the three or four that are most productive for the text in front of you and analyse those in depth.
4. Decoding Media Language |
Media language is your starting point because it is the most concrete. You can look at the text, name a technique, and immediately say what effect it produces.
For moving image, look at four families of technique: camera (shot size, angle, movement), editing (cuts, dissolves, rhythm, montage), colour and lighting (palette, high-key or low-key, contrast), and sound (dialogue, music, sound effects, voiceover, silence).
For print and online texts, the equivalent toolkit is typography, layout, use of white space, image selection, colour scheme, and the placement of logos, slogans or calls to action.
|---|---|
| Extreme close-up 大特写 | Creates intimacy, forces attention on detail or emotion. |
| Low angle 仰拍 | Makes the subject appear powerful, dominant or threatening. |
| Handheld camera 手持摄影 | Suggests realism, urgency or instability.
