📚 Year 9 CCEA Drama: Formulae and Theorems Quick Reference Handbook | Year 9 CCEA
In the creative world of drama, there are underlying principles that can be thought of as 'formulae' or 'theorems' - reliable patterns that help you build character, generate tension, and engage an audience. This quick reference handbook distils the key concepts of the Year 9 CCEA Drama curriculum into easy-to-remember formulas. Use them as your toolkit for devising, performing, and evaluating dramatic work, and as a bridge towards the demands of GCSE Drama.
Each section below pairs an English explanation with a Chinese counterpart, so you can revise in either language and check that your understanding is genuinely secure. Every formula is followed by the practical detail that earns marks: the vocabulary your teacher and examiner expect, and the rehearsal decisions that turn theory into performance.
1. The Fundamental Drama Equation |
Every successful piece of drama relies on two indispensable ingredients: conflict and tension. Without them, there is no reason for the audience to care. The fundamental equation is:
Conflict + Tension = Drama
Conflict arises when a character wants something but faces an obstacle - this could be another character (external), an inner struggle (internal), or the environment (physical). Tension is the emotional and intellectual suspense that keeps the audience asking, 'What will happen next?' In your devised work, always identify what the central conflict is, and then amplify the tension through pacing, sound, and staging choices.
A useful habit is to write the equation out at the top of every rehearsal log page: name the conflict in one sentence, then list three specific ways you will raise the tension. If you cannot name the conflict, you do not yet have a play - you have a series of scenes.
2. The Conflict Formula |
Conflict is not simply an argument. It is a structural force, and it can be written as a formula:
Want + Obstacle = Conflict
The stronger the want and the tougher the obstacle, the greater the conflict. This is why vague characters who 'just want to be happy' create weak drama: their want is too general to be blocked, and so nothing is at stake. Give your character a concrete want with a deadline - 'to tell her the truth before the train leaves' - and the conflict becomes playable.
The three categories of conflict every Year 9 student should be able to name and illustrate:
- External conflict / 外部冲突: character against character - rivalry, betrayal, power struggles, secrecy.
- Internal conflict / 内部冲突: character against self - guilt, fear, divided loyalty, temptation.
- Physical conflict / 自然与环境冲突: character against environment or circumstance - weather, money, time, illness, a locked door.
Most strong scenes layer two or three types at once. A girl arguing with her mother (external) while hiding her own fear (internal) in a house that is about to be sold (physical) gives the audience three reasons to keep watching.
3. The Tension Theorem |
Tension is the audience's experience of not knowing, and it can be engineered deliberately. A working theorem is:
Tension = Stakes × Uncertainty × Time Pressure
Because the three factors multiply rather than add, weakening any one of them collapses the whole effect. If the outcome does not matter (low stakes), or the audience already knows what happens (no uncertainty), or there is unlimited time (no pressure), tension falls away.
Seven practical types of tension you can label in your notes and apply in rehearsal:
| Type / 类型 | How it is created / 如何制造 |
| Task tension / 任务张力 | A difficult job must be completed in front of us. |
| Relationship tension / 关系张力 | Two characters need different things from each other. |
| Surprise tension / 突转张力 | A sudden revelation changes what we thought we knew. |
| Mystery tension / 悬念张力 | Withheld information the audience wants to solve. |
| Dilemma tension / 两难张力 | Every choice costs something important. |
| Powerlessness tension / 无力感张力 | A character cannot act, or is not believed. |
| Physical tension / 身体张力 | Stillness, silence, proximity or controlled movement. |
In performance, the pause is your sharpest tool. A held silence before a line can raise tension more effectively than shouting, because it forces the audience to fill the gap themselves.
4. The Character Equation |
Characters are not personality descriptions; they are engines of action. The equation is:
Given Circumstances + Objective + Obstacle + Action = Character
This formula comes from Stanislavski's system, and it remains the most reliable way to make a performance truthful. Given circumstances are the facts your character cannot change: age, class, family, health, the room, the year, the secret. The objective is what the character wants in this scene right now, expressed as an active verb: to persuade, to protect, to escape, to punish, to confess.
Two companion tools are essential. The 'Magic If' asks, 'If I were in these circumstances, what would I do?' - it builds belief without pretending the fiction is real. Emotion memory asks you to recall a comparable feeling from your own life and channel it into the moment, never simply to display it.
Remember the order: objective first, then obstacle, then action. Beginners often start with how a character 'feels'. Professionals start with what a character does to get what they want.
5. Super-Objective and Through-Line |
A single scene objective is not enough. The whole play needs a spine:
Super-Objective = Σ (Objectives of individual units)
The super-objective is the one desire that drives a character through the entire play - to be forgiven, to be free, to be loved, to be remembered. The through-line is the continuous chain of small objectives that leads there. When you break a script or a devised piece into units (also called beats), each unit marks a change of objective, and you should be able to name that change out loud in rehearsal.
A quick rehearsal exercise: write your character's super-objective on a card and stick it where you can see it. Every time you rehearse a unit, check whether your action still serves that desire. If it does not, either the objective or the action is wrong.
6. The Structure Formula |
Whether you are devising or studying a scripted extract, dramatic structure follows a recognisable pattern, often drawn as Freytag's pyramid:
Exposition → Inciting Incident → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Resolution
- Exposition / 说明: who, where, when, and the mood we begin in.
- Inciting incident / 激励事件: the event that makes the story unavoidable.
- Rising action / 上升行动: obstacles multiply and complications tighten.
- Climax / 高潮: the highest point of conflict, where the outcome is decided.
- Falling action / 下降行动: the consequences unfold.
- Resolution / 结局: the new balance - peace, loss, or uneasy calm.
A second theorem explains why beginnings and endings carry so much weight:
Impact ≈ Recency + Primacy
The audience remembers the first thirty seconds and the last thirty seconds most vividly. Open with an image or a line that raises a question; close with an image that answers it, or deliberately refuses to.
7. The Devising Formula |
Devised work is not random improvisation; it is a process you can plan, record and justify. Use:
→ Improvisation → Selection → Shaping → Rehearsal → Refinement → Performance → Evaluation
The stimulus is your starting point: a photograph, a poem, a news story, a piece of music, a single word, an object. A strong stimulus is not a plot - it is a question. 'What happens to a family when the last photograph is destroyed?' will give you far more material than 'a sad story about a family'.
Three practical rules that protect the quality of devised work:
- Improvise to explore, not to perform / 即兴是为了探索,不是为了表演: the first idea is rarely the best one, so generate twenty before choosing three.
- Record everything / 记录一切: keep a devising log with dates, ideas rejected, and reasons for decisions.
- Shape with intention / 有意图地塑形: every scene must earn its place by advancing conflict or revealing character.
Your devising log is evidence. Examiners reward students who can explain why a moment was cut as clearly as why another was kept.
8. The Vocal Equation |
Voice is the most direct route to an audience's emotions. Seven controllable variables make up the vocal equation:
Voice = Volume + Pitch + Pace + Pause + Projection + Articulation + Accent
| Volume / 音量 | Loudness; sustained shouting flattens meaning. |
| Pitch / 音高 | High or low register; rising pitch suggests nerves or pleading. |
| Pace / 语速 | Speed of delivery; acceleration signals panic or excitement. |
| Pause / 停顿 | Silence used for emphasis, hesitation or threat. |
| Projection / 投射 | Supporting the voice from the diaphragm so it reaches the back row. |
| Articulation / 吐字 | Clarity of consonants and vowels; careless endings lose meaning. |
| Accent and dialect / 口音与方言 | Regional or social sound that locates character and place. |
Mark your script with vocal scores using initials in pencil: V for volume, P for pace, ( ) for pause. A performance that uses only volume and pace sounds monotonous; a performance that varies all seven sounds alive.
9. Physicality and Proxemics |
An audience reads the body before it hears the words. The physical equation is:
Physicality = Posture + Gesture + Gait + Facial Expression + Levels + Proximity
Posture reveals status: an upright spine suggests confidence or defiance, a collapsed chest suggests defeat. Gesture should be specific rather than decorative - a hand that closes around an object tells us more than a hand that waves. Gait shows age, health and mood. Levels (standing, sitting, kneeling, lying) create visual hierarchy on stage, and proxemics - the distance between bodies - carries the scene's emotional temperature.
| 0–45 cm / 亲密距离 | Intimacy, threat, or forced confession. |
| 45–120 cm / 个人距离 | Friendship, ordinary conversation, quiet negotiation. |
| 1.2–3.6 m / 社交距离 | Formality, authority, business or interrogation. |
| 3.6 m+ / 公共距离 | Isolation, public speech, or deliberate exclusion. |
Remember that stillness is a choice too. A character who does not move while others argue can dominate the stage more powerfully than one who paces.
10. The Design and Technical Equation |
Design is not decoration; it is meaning made visible and audible.
Atmosphere = Set + Costume + Lighting + Sound + Props + Make-Up
- Set / 布景: defines space, era and class; entrance and exit points control the rhythm of a scene.
- Costume / 服装: signals status, period, occupation and change; a single altered detail can imply a whole backstory.
- Lighting / 灯光: controls focus, time of day and mood; a slow fade to black can be the most dramatic moment of all.
- Sound / 音效: builds tension offstage and marks transitions; music must support, never replace, the action.
- Props / 道具: a handled object becomes a symbol - a ring, a key, a letter, a phone.
- Make-Up / 化妆: age, injury, transformation or stylisation.
Each element is a sign the audience interprets. Ask of every choice: what does this tell them that the dialogue does not?
11. The Audience Engagement Theorem |
Drama only exists when it is watched. Engagement can be modelled as:
Engagement = Clarity × Emotional Truth × Surprise × Relevance
Clarity means the audience can follow who wants what and why. Emotional truth means the performance feels earned rather than acted. Surprise means the play avoids the obvious next step. Relevance means the audience recognises something of their own world in yours. Again the factors multiply: a technically brilliant but emotionally empty performance produces no engagement at all.
Two related concepts are worth naming in your written work: the suspension of disbelief, the audience's willingness to accept the fiction, and the fourth wall, the invisible barrier between stage and audience. Breaching that wall with direct address, narration or thought tracking can create powerful intimacy, but it must be used with purpose, not as a gimmick.
12. The Evaluation Formula |
Analysis and evaluation carry significant marks, and they follow their own formula:
Evaluation = Intention + Impact + Evidence + Improvement
State what you intended the audience to feel or understand; describe the actual impact; give precise evidence - a named moment, a specific vocal or physical choice, a piece of staging; then propose a concrete improvement. Compare these two answers:
