1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy comes from the Greek words 'philo' (love) and 'sophia' (wisdom), literally meaning the love of wisdom. It is the rational investigation of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, morality, reason, the mind, and language.
Unlike empirical sciences that depend on observation and experiment, philosophy relies on logical argument, conceptual analysis, and critical thinking to examine assumptions and clarify concepts. It does not simply accept claims at face value but asks "why?" and "what do you mean?"
Philosophy also teaches intellectual humility. By questioning our own beliefs, we learn to recognise the limits of our knowledge and to construct better-supported positions.
2. Branches of Philosophy |
The main branches of philosophy include: Metaphysics (the study of reality and existence), Epistemology (the theory of knowledge), Ethics (moral philosophy), Logic (the study of correct reasoning), and Aesthetics (the philosophy of art and beauty).
Each branch addresses a different set of questions. For example, epistemology asks, "What does it mean to know something?" while ethics examines, "How should we live?" Metaphysicians might wonder, "What is the nature of time?" or "Do we have free will?"
By dividing philosophy into these areas, we can better focus on specific problems while recognising that many questions overlap. For instance, the mind-body problem sits at the intersection of metaphysics and epistemology.
3. Logic and Argument |
Logic is the study of valid reasoning. An argument consists of premises (statements providing reasons) and a conclusion (the statement the premises support). A deductively valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true.
rates is mortal (∴ Q). Using symbols: P → Q, P ∴ Q. This structure is called modus ponens.
Inductive arguments, in contrast, provide probable but not guaranteed support for their conclusions. For instance, observing that the sun has risen every day in recorded history leads to the probable conclusion that it will rise tomorrow. Scientific reasoning often relies on induction.
Recognising common fallacies—errors in reasoning—is also a key part of logic. For example, an ad hominem fallacy attacks the person making an argument rather than addressing the argument itself.
4. Socrates and the Socratic Method |
Socrates (c. 470–399 BCE) is a foundational figure in Western philosophy. He did not write down his teachings; we know him primarily through Plato's dialogues. Socrates famously claimed, "I know that I know nothing," an expression of intellectual humility known as Socratic irony.
The Socratic method involves asking a series of probing questions to help a person examine their beliefs and arrive at a deeper understanding. It is a cooperative dialogue aimed at exposing contradictions and clarifying concepts.
Socrates was eventually put on trial for corrupting the youth and impiety. He accepted the death penalty by drinking hemlock, demonstrating his commitment to his principles and to the idea that an unexamined life is not worth living.
5. Plato's Theory of Forms |
Plato (c. 428–348 BCE), a student of Socrates, developed the Theory of Forms. He argued that the physical world we perceive with our senses is only a shadow or imperfect copy of a higher reality—the realm of Forms (or Ideas).
