1. Population and Sample |
A population is the entire set of individuals or items that we want to study. Because measuring everyone is often impossible, we select a sample – a smaller, manageable subset of the population. The sample must be representative for conclusions to be valid.
- Population: all students in your school. Sample: 50 students chosen at random.
2. Variable and Data Types |
A variable is any characteristic that can be measured or counted. Data can be categorical (qualitative) or numerical (quantitative). Numerical data is further split into discrete data, which can only take certain values (usually whole numbers), and continuous data, which can take any value within a range.
- Categorical: eye colour, favourite subject.
- Discrete: number of books in a bag (0, 1, 2, …).
- Continuous: height of a plant (can be 12.3 cm, 12.35 cm).
3. Frequency and Frequency Table |
Frequency is the number of times a particular value or category occurs in a data set. A frequency table organises data by listing each item along with its frequency. Tally marks are often used when collecting data by hand.
| Favourite Colour | Tally | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | |||| | 4 |
| Red | || | 2 |
4. Mean, Median, Mode and Range |
These are the most common measures of central tendency and spread. The mean is the arithmetic average, calculated by summing all values and dividing by the number of values. The median is the middle value when data is ordered. The mode is the value that appears most often. The range is the difference between the largest and smallest values, showing how spread out the data is.
Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values)
Range = Largest value – Smallest value
- Data: 3, 7, 7, 9, 14 → Mean = (3+7+7+9+14)/5 = 8; Median = 7; Mode = 7; Range = 14 – 3 = 11.
5. Probability Basics |
Probability measures how likely an event is to happen, and is always a number between 0 and 1. A probability of 0 means impossible, 1 means certain. The probability of an event can be expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage. The probability scale helps visualise this.
P(Event) = Number of favourable outcomes ÷ Total number of possible outcomes
- Tossing a fair coin: P(Head) = ½ = 0.5 = 50%.
6. Experiment and Outcome |
In probability, an experiment is a repeatable process that gives rise to a set of results. Each possible result is called an outcome. The set of all possible outcomes is the sample space. An event is a collection of one or more outcomes, usually the ones we are interested in.
- Experiment: rolling a dice. Sample space: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. Event “even number”: {2, 4, 6}.
7. Fair and Unfair |
When all outcomes have the same probability of occurring, the event or device is described as fair. A fair coin or a fair dice is equally likely to show any face. If some outcomes are more likely than others, the process is biased or unfair. The term “equally likely” is a key phrase.
- A fair spinner with 4 equal sections gives each colour a probability of ¼.
8. Charts and Graphs | 图表
Statistical diagrams help us visualise data. A bar chart uses bars to show frequencies of categorical or discrete data; the bars do not touch. A pictogram uses pictures to represent data. A pie chart shows proportions of a whole using sectors of a circle. A line graph plots points connected by lines, often used for time series. A scatter graph displays the relationship between two numerical variables.
- Bar chart: favourite pet of students. Pie chart: how a student spends their day.
9. Scatter Graphs and Correlation |
A scatter graph shows paired values from two variables on the x- and y-axes. The pattern of points may reveal correlation. Positive correlation means as one variable increases, the other tends to increase. Negative correlation means as one increases, the other tends to decrease. No correlation means there is no clear pattern. Correlation does not imply causation.
- Positive: height and shoe size (generally). Negative: speed and travel time.
10. Outlier | 异常值
An outlier is a data point that lies far away from the other values in the set. It may be due to measurement error or natural variation. Outliers can strongly affect the mean and range, so you need to decide carefully whether to include or exclude them in calculations.
- Test scores: 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 30. The score 30 is an outlier.
11. Primary and Secondary Data |
Primary data is information you collect yourself for a specific purpose, such as through a survey or experiment. Secondary data is data that has already been collected by someone else, like census data or information from websites. Knowing the source helps assess reliability.
- Primary: measuring the handspan of classmates. Secondary: using published weather records.
12. Hypothesis and Conclusion |
In statistical investigations, we often start with a hypothesis – a prediction or statement that can be tested with data. After collecting and analysing data, we draw a conclusion about whether the evidence supports the hypothesis. A good conclusion refers back to the original question and acknowledges any limitations.
- Hypothesis: “Year 9 boys spend more time on video games than Year 9 girls.” Collect data, compare means, then write conclusion.
