📚 Year 9 CCEA Psychology: Case Study Practical Exercises | Year 9 CCEA
Psychology is not just about memorising theories; it is about understanding how those theories apply to real people. Case studies allow us to step into someone else's life and use psychological concepts to explain behaviour, thoughts, and emotions. In this article, we will practise analysing different scenarios, linking each one to a key theory you will encounter in Year 9 CCEA Psychology. By the end, you will feel more confident in breaking down a case, selecting the right theory, and discussing ethical considerations.
1. What Is a Case Study in Psychology? |
A case study is an in-depth investigation of a single person, group, or event. Researchers gather data using interviews, observations, questionnaires, and sometimes psychological tests. The aim is to build a rich, detailed picture that can help explain unique or unusual behaviour.
Case studies are particularly useful when psychologists cannot conduct experiments for ethical or practical reasons. For example, studying a child who has experienced extreme neglect can offer insights into attachment, but it would be unethical to create such conditions in a lab.
However, case studies do have limitations. Because they focus on one individual, we cannot always generalise the findings to the wider population. The researcher’s own interpretations may also introduce bias.
2. The Step-by-Step Approach to Case Analysis |
To analyse a case study effectively, you can follow a simple four-step framework. This structure will help you stay organised and make sure you cover everything examiners are looking for.
Below is a table summarising the steps. Keep it in mind as we work through the cases later.
| Step | English |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Describe the behaviour or experience. | |
| 2 | Link to a relevant psychological theory. | |
| 3 | Apply the theory to explain the case. | |
| 4 | Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the explanation. | |
When you practise, start by highlighting key details in the case. Then ask yourself: which Year 9 theory best fits this scenario? Always use psychological terminology to show depth of understanding.
3. Case Study 1: Remembering a Day Out – The Multi-Store Model |
Jamie, aged 14, describes his birthday trip to a theme park. He recalls the loud roar of the roller coaster, the taste of candyfloss, and the exact moment his friend screamed on the log flume. Interestingly, he cannot remember the colour of the ticket booth assistant's shirt, even though he looked right at her when buying tickets.
This case can be explained using the Multi-Store Model of Memory (Atkinson & Shiffrin). Information enters sensory memory, where it is held very briefly. If we pay attention to it, the information moves to short-term memory; otherwise it is forgotten. Jamie paid attention to the exciting sounds and tastes but did not attend to the assistant's shirt colour, so that sensory trace decayed rapidly.
Short-term memory has a limited capacity (about 7±2 items) and duration of around 18–30 seconds without rehearsal. Jamie' ed them by talking about the day with his family, transferring them into long-term memory.
When applying the model, we can say that paying attention to sensory input, engaging in rehearsal, and forming strong episodic memories all explain Jamie's experience. A limitation is that the model oversimplifies memory as a linear flow; it does not explain why some unrehearsed events still stick, like a traumatic moment.
4. Case Study 2: Conformity in the Classroom – Asch’s Study |
During a maths lesson, the teacher asks the class to estimate the length of a line on the board. Maya thinks the line is about 15 cm, but five classmates confidently answer 20 cm. Although Maya knows her answer is closer, she hesitates and then says 20 cm to match the others. Later she tells her friend she felt pressure not to stand out.
This is a clear example of conformity, fitting Solomon Asch’s classic research. Asch found that participants often gave obviously wrong answers to a line-judgment task when they heard several confederates giving the same incorrect response. He concluded that normative social influence – the desire to fit in and be accepted – drives such behaviour.
Maya experienced normative social influence: she knew the correct answer but conformed to avoid disapproval. Factors that increase conformity include group size (up to about four people), unanimity of the group, and the task being public. All were present in the classroom.
Applying Asch’s study helps explain why Maya acted as she did. However, the situation was not a lab experiment, so other variables, like Maya's relationship with her classmates, may also have played a role. Furthermore, Asch’s study was criticised for using a biased sample of American male students, limiting generalisability.
5. Case Study 3: A Strange Situation – Attachment Types |
One-year-old Leo and his mother enter a playroom. Leo explores the toys happily, occasionally looking back at his mother. When a stranger enters, Leo is a little wary but warms up when his mother smiles. When his mother leaves the room, Leo cries and cannot be comforted by the stranger. Upon her return, he immediately crawls to her, reaches out to be picked up, and calms down within seconds.
Mary Ainsworth’s Strange Situation study identified three main attachment types: secure, insecure-avoidant, and insecure-resistant. Leo’s behaviour matches a secure attachment. Securely attached infants use their caregiver as a safe base from which to explore, show distress when separated, and are easily soothed upon reunion.
An insecure-avoidant child would likely ignore the mother and show little distress, while an insecure-resistant child would be clingy, extremely upset upon separation, and resist comfort on reunion. Leo showed neither pattern.
The case highlights how sensitive responsiveness from a caregiver usually leads to secure attachment. Criticism of the Strange Situation includes the fact that it is a short, artificial observation and may not reflect care in the home. Also, cultural differences in parenting mean behaviours might be interpreted differently across contexts.
6. Case Study 4: Exam Stress – The Fight-or-Flight Response |
Zara is sitting in the exam hall. Her heart pounds, her palms sweat, and her breathing becomes rapid as the papers are handed out. She feels a surge of energy but also a sense of panic. Twenty minutes later, she is able to focus, and the physical sensations subside a little.
This reaction is the body’s acute stress response, often called the fight-or-flight response. When the brain perceives a threat – in this case, a high-stakes exam – the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal medulla, releasing adrenaline and noradrenaline. These hormones increase heart rate, redirect blood to muscles, and sharpen alertness.
The fight-or-flight response is adaptive when facing physical danger, but during exams it can be less helpful, especially if it triggers panic. Once Zara realises the exam is manageable, her parasympathetic nervous system begins to calm her body down.
We can also link this case to Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome: the alarm stage (initial shock), resistance stage (coping with the stressor), and eventually exhaustion if stress is prolonged. Fortunately for Zara, the exam is short enough to stay within the resistance stage.
An evaluative point is that the fight-or-flight response research was based mainly on male animals and participants; women may show a ‘tend-and-befriend’ pattern under stress. Also, individual differences mean some students experience more intense physical arousal than others.
7. Case Study 5: Phobia of Dogs – Classical Conditioning |
Six-year-old Evie used to love playing with her neighbour’s Labrador. One day, while running with a toy, the dog accidentally knocked her over and she fell hard onto the pavement, hurting her wrist. Since that incident, Evie freezes and starts trembling whenever she sees any dog, even small, friendly ones.
This phobia can be understood through Ivan Pavlov’s classical conditioning. Before the incident, the dog (neutral stimulus) produced no fear. The painful fall was an unconditioned stimulus (US) that naturally caused fear (unconditioned response, UR). The dog was present when the pain occurred, so it became associated with the US. After conditioning, the dog alone (now a conditioned stimulus, CS) triggers the conditioned response (CR) of fear.
Generalisation has also occurred because Evie now fears all dogs, not just the Labrador. Higher-order conditioning may explain why even the sound of a dog barking or a picture of a dog can trigger anxiety.
Classical conditioning offers a clear explanation, but it does not account for the cognitive element – Evie may also have developed irrational beliefs about dogs that maintain the fear. Treatments such as systematic desensitisation, based on counter-conditioning, could help her unlearn the phobia gradually.
8. Ethics in Case Study Research |
Whenever psychologists work with human participants, ethical principles must be followed. Even when analysing case studies in class, it is important to think about how the data was obtained and how the person’s rights were protected.
The four main ethical guidelines in psychological research are: informed consent, confidentiality, protection from harm, and the right to withdraw. In a case study, a researcher must ensure the participant (or their guardian) fully understands what the study involves and agrees to take part.
Confidentiality means personal details should be anonymised. Names are usually changed, and identifying information is removed. In our case examples, names like Jamie and Maya are pseudonyms, protecting the real individuals’ identities.
Protection from harm requires that no psychological or physical damage occurs. If recalling a trauma is part of a case study, the psychologist must provide support and stop if distress is too great. The right to withdraw allows participants to leave at any time without penalty.
As students, we should be sensitive when discussing real-life inspired scenarios and avoid making judgements. Ethical thinking not only makes you a better psychology student but also a more empathetic person.
