1. Speed and Distance-Time Graphs |

r unit of time. The formula is speed = distance ÷ time. In physics, we often write this as v = d / t, where v is speed, d is distance and t is time. The standard unit of speed is metres per second (m/s).

It can be calculated as: acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time taken. The unit is m/s².

A distance‑time graph shows the journey of an object. A straight, sloping line means constant speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary. The steeper the slope, the greater the speed.

2. Forces and Newton’s Laws |

A force is a push or a pull that can change the shape, speed or direction of an object. Forces are measured in newtons (N). Common forces include gravity, friction, air resistance and tension.

Newton’s first law states that an object remains at rest or moves at constant speed in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force. Newton’s second law links force, mass and acceleration: F = m × a. Newton’s third law says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

× gravitational field strength. On Earth, g ≈ 9.8 N/kg, so a 1 kg mass weighs about 9.8 N.

3. Energy Stores and Transfers |

Energy is the ability to do work. It can be stored in different forms: kinetic (movement), gravitational potential (height), elastic potential (stretched or compressed objects), thermal (heat), chemical and nuclear.

Energy is conserved – it cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one store to another. When an object falls, gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. In a stretched rubber band, elastic potential energy is turned into kinetic energy when released.

gy is transferred usefully. Efficiency = (useful output energy ÷ total input energy) × 100% used to show energy transfers, with the width of arrows representing the amount of energy.

4. Work, Power and Efficiency |

e direction of the force. It is measured in joules (J). One joule is the work done when a force of 1 newton moves an object 1 metre.

taken, or power = energy transferred ÷ time. The unit is the watt (W), where 1 W = 1 J/s.

We often use the formula P = E / t ncy can also be expressed as: efficiency = (useful power output ÷ total power input) × 100%.

5. Static and Current Electricity |

Static electricity is the build‑up of electric charge on the surface of an insulator. Rubbing two materials together can transfer electrons, making one material positively charged and the other negatively charged.

Like charges repel, opposite charges attract. A spark can occur when a large static charge suddenly discharges through the air. Lightning is a natural example of static discharge.

Current electricity is the flow of charged particles. In a metal wire, the moving charges are electrons. Electric current is measured in amperes (A) using an ammeter connected in series. The direction of conventional current is from positive to negative.

6. Voltage, Current and Resistance |

Voltage (potential difference) is the push that drives current around a circuit. It is measured in volts (V) using a voltmeter connected in parallel across a component. Current is the flow of charge, and resistance is how much a component opposes the flow of current. Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω).

Ohm’s law links these three quantities: V = I × R, where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance. If the voltage across a resistor is increased, the current increases proportionally, provided the temperature stays constant.

Resistance in a wire depends on its material, length and thickness. A longer wire has greater resistance; a thicker wire has lower resistance. Some components, like diodes, do not obey Ohm’s law because their resistance changes with current direction.

7. Series and Parallel Circuits |

Components can be connected in series or parallel. In a series circuit, there is only one path for the current. The current is the same at all points. The total voltage is shared between components. If one component breaks, the circuit is broken and all components stop working.

In a parallel circuit, there are two or more branches. The current splits between the branches, but the total current equals the sum of the branch currents. The voltage across each branch is the same. If one branch breaks, the other branches can still work.

Property Series Parallel
Current Same everywhere Splits; total = sum of branches
Voltage Shared across components Same across each branch
Resistance Total = sum of all resistances Total < smallest individual resistor

8. Wave Properties and Sound |

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. There are two main types: transverse waves (the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer, e.g. light, water waves) and longitudinal waves (oscillations are parallel, e.g. sound, ultrasound).

The amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement from the rest position. Wavelength is the distance between two successive crests. Frequency is the number of complete waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz). The wave speed equation is: v = f × λ, where v is speed (m/s), f is frequency (Hz) and λ is wavelength (m).

Sound is a longitudinal wave that travels through solids, liquids and gases. It cannot travel through a vacuum. The speed of sound in air is about 330 m/s. Echoes are reflections of sound. Pitch depends on frequency, loudness depends on amplitude.

9. Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum |

refracted. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.

Refraction happens when light passes from one medium to another and changes speed, causing it to change direction. A lens can converge or diverge light rays. White light can be split into the colours of the visible spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) by a prism.

Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Other parts include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, X‑rays and gamma rays. All electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light in a vacuum and differ only in their wavelength and frequency.

10. Particle Model, Density and Pressure |

The particle model describes solids, liquids and gases in terms of the arrangement and motion of tiny particles. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and vibrate in fixed positions. In liquids, particles are close but can slide past each other. In gases, particles are far apart and move freely at high speeds.

Density is the mass per unit volume. Density = mass ÷ volume, usually written as ρ = m / V. The unit is kg/m³ or g/cm³. An object will float if its density is less than the density of the fluid it is placed in.

单位是 kg/m³ 或 g/cm³。

N/m². In liquids, pressure increases with depth due to the weight of the fluid above. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 101 000 Pa.
