1. The Elements of Music |
The seven elements of music are the basic building blocks that describe what we hear in any piece. They are pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure.
Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds. Melody uses pitch to create memorable lines, while harmony combines different pitches at the same time.
Duration deals with how long or short notes and rests are. Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds, while beat is the steady pulse you feel.
Dynamics describe the volume of the music, from very soft (pianissimo, pp) to very loud (fortissimo, ff) and everything in between.
Tempo is the speed of the music. Common tempo markings include Largo (slow), Andante (walking pace), Allegro (fast), and Presto (very fast).
常见的速度术语包括 Largo(广板,缓慢)、Andante(行板,步行速度)、Allegro(快板)和 Presto(急板,非常快)。
Timbre, or tone colour, is the unique quality of a sound that lets you tell a violin from a trumpet even when they play the same note.
Texture refers to how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate. It can be thin (a solo) or thick (a full orchestra).
Structure is the overall plan or form of a piece of music, such as verse-chorus, binary (AB), ternary (ABA) or rondo (ABACA).
2. Pitch and Melody |
A melody is built from steps (conjunct motion) and leaps (disjunct motion). Conjunct melodies move smoothly between adjacent notes, while disjunct melodies jump across larger intervals.
Melodies are often based on scales. The most common are major scales (bright, happy) and minor scales (sad, serious). Pentatonic scales use five notes and appear in many folk and world music traditions.
A phrase is a musical sentence, often ending with a cadence. Melodies can be decorated with ornaments like trills, turns, and grace notes to add interest.
Repetition, sequence (repeating a pattern at a higher or lower pitch) and contrast are important techniques in shaping melodies.
3. Rhythm and Metre |
Rhythm is the pattern of notes and rests of different lengths. Common note values include semibreve (4 beats), minim (2 beats), crotchet (1 beat), quaver (half a beat) and semiquaver (quarter of a beat).
A time signature appears at the start of a piece. The top number shows how many beats in a bar, and the bottom number shows which note value gets one beat. For example, 4/4 has four crotchet beats per bar; 3/4 has three; 6/8 has six quaver beats, often grouped in two sets of three.
Dotted notes add half the original length again. A dotted crotchet lasts for one and a half beats. Syncopation shifts the accent to a weak beat or off-beat, creating a surprise effect often heard in pop and jazz.
Rests are moments of silence with their own values: semibreve rest, minim rest, crotchet rest, quaver rest and semiquaver rest.
4. Harmony and Tonality |
Harmony happens when two or more notes sound together. A chord is a group of notes played simultaneously. A triad is a three-note chord built from the root, third and fifth of a scale.
The most important chords in any key are the tonic (I), dominant (V) and subdominant (IV). Together they form the backbone of many chord progressions.
Cadences are chord pairs that end phrases. A perfect cadence (V-I) sounds final and complete. An imperfect cadence (I-V or IV-V) sounds unfinished. A plagal cadence (IV-I) is the 'Amen' sound, and an interrupted cadence (V-vi) surprises the listener.
Tonality refers to the key of a piece. Major keys sound bright, minor keys sound darker. Modulation is when the music changes key during a piece.
5. Texture and Structure |
Monophonic texture has a single melodic line with no accompaniment. Think of a solo singer without backing. Homophonic texture has a main melody supported by chords, the most common texture today.
Polyphonic texture features two or more independent melodies woven together, like a canon or fugue. Heterophonic texture occurs when two or more performers play the same melody but with slightly different versions, common in some folk traditions.
Structure gives music shape. Binary form (AB) has two contrasting sections, often repeated. Ternary form (ABA) returns to the opening material. Rondo form (ABACA) keeps bringing back a main theme. Theme and variations changes a melody each time it returns. Verse-chorus form is used in countless pop songs.
6. Dynamics and Articulation |
Dynamics are shown with Italian abbreviations: pianissimo (pp) very soft, piano (p) soft, mezzo piano (mp) moderately soft, mezzo forte (mf) moderately loud, forte (f) loud, fortissimo (ff) very loud.
Gradual changes include crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo or decrescendo (getting softer). A sforzando (sfz) is a sudden strong accent.
Articulation describes how notes are played. Legato means smoothly connected. Staccato means short and detached, shown by a dot above or below the note. An accent (>) marks a note to be played with extra force. Tenuto (-) means hold for full value. String players also use pizzicato (plucked) and arco (bowed).
7. Instruments and Ensembles |
The orchestra is divided into four families. Strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp. Woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon. Brass: trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba. Percussion: timpani, snare drum, cymbals, xylophone, and many more.

9. Notation and Score Reading |
The treble clef (also called G clef) is used for higher-pitched instruments and the right hand of keyboard music. The bass clef (F clef) is used for lower instruments and the left hand of keyboard music.
Notes are placed on lines and spaces of the staff (or stave). Ledger lines extend the staff above and below. In treble clef, the spaces spell F A C E; the lines are E G B D F (Every Good Boy Deserves Football). In bass clef, the spaces are A C E G (All Cows Eat Grass); the lines are G B D F A (Good Boys Deserve Football Always).
高音谱号中,间名是 F A C E;线名是 E G B D F。低音谱号中,间名是 A C E G;线名是 G B D F A。
Accidentals include sharps (♯) raising a note by a semitone, flats (♭) lowering by a semitone, and naturals (♮) restoring the original pitch. A key signature gathers sharps or flats at the start to set the key.
Ties and slurs are curved lines. A tie joins two notes of the same pitch to sound as one longer note. A slur indicates that different notes should be played smoothly (legato). Repeat marks direct you to play a section again.
10. Composing and Arranging |
When composing a melody, start with a clear idea or motif. Use steps and a few well-placed leaps. Create phrases that feel like questions and answers, often ending with contrasting cadences.
Choose a key and a time signature that suit the mood. Add a chord progression using mainly I, IV and V, with vi for a more emotional twist. Experiment with inversions to make the bass line more interesting.
Develop your melody through repetition, sequence, augmentation (longer note values) or diminution (shorter note values). Add a contrasting B section to create binary or ternary form.
Texture can be varied: accompany a melody with block chords, broken chords (arpeggios) or a countermelody. Think about articulations, dynamics and tempo changes to bring your composition to life.
11. World Music Traditions |
African drumming often uses layered rhythms and polyrhythms played on djembes and talking drums. Call and response is a key feature, with a leader playing a pattern and the group answering.
Indian classical music is based on raga (melodic framework) and tala (rhythmic cycle). Instruments include sitar, tabla and tanpura. Performances often include a slow introduction (alap) followed by a composed piece (gat).
