📚 Year 9 OCR Economics: Winter Break Intensive Revision Plan | Year 9 OCR
Welcome to your Year 9 OCR Economics winter revision programme. This plan is designed to help you consolidate the key concepts from the first two terms in a structured and manageable way. Over the break, you will revisit the fundamental economic problem, the role of markets, how prices are determined, and the basic tools of economic analysis. Each day targets a specific topic with clear objectives and short activities, keeping your study focused and efficient without eating into too much holiday time.
1. The Basic Economic Problem |
The fundamental economic problem arises because resources are limited but human wants are unlimited. Scarcity forces individuals, firms, and governments to make choices, and every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative forgone. In your revision, make sure you can define scarcity and opportunity cost in your own words, and identify them in real-life scenarios. Think about a government choosing between building a hospital or a school: the opportunity cost of the hospital is the school that is not built.
- The basic economic problem: unlimited wants versus limited resources.
- Scarcity means not having enough resources to satisfy all wants.
- Opportunity cost is what you give up when making a decision.
- Use a simple example: if you spend £10 on a cinema ticket, the opportunity cost might be the book you did not buy.
2. Factors of Production |
The factors of production are the resources used to produce goods and services. They are usually grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital, and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources, labour is the human effort, capital covers man-made tools and machinery, and enterprise is the willingness to take risks and bring the other factors together. In Year 9, you are expected to describe each factor clearly and give examples. A common exam trap is to confuse physical capital (machines) with financial capital (money), which is not a factor of production in the OCR syllabus.
- Land: natural resources such as oil, water, forests, and land itself.
- Labour: human workers and their skills.
- Capital: man-made goods used in production, like factory machinery.
- Enterprise: the entrepreneur who organises the other three factors and takes risks.
3. Economic Agents and Their Objectives |
Economic agents are the decision-makers in an economy: consumers, producers, and the government. Consumers aim to maximise their satisfaction or utility, producers typically aim to maximise profits, and governments generally try to improve overall welfare, such as by achieving stable prices and low unemployment. When you revise, connect these objectives to opportunity cost. For example, a firm's decision to spend more on advertising comes at the expense of investing in new machinery. Know how the interests of these agents can conflict: a consumer wants low prices, but a producer may want higher prices to boost revenue.
- Consumers (households) maximise satisfaction.
- Producers (firms) maximise profit.
- Government aims to improve economic welfare, e.g. low unemployment.
- Choices faced by each agent always involve trade-offs.
4. The Role of Markets |
A market is any arrangement that allows buyers and sellers to exchange goods and services. Markets can be physical, like a local fruit market, or virtual, like an online retailer. They help to allocate scarce resources by signalling what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce. The price mechanism brings together the decisions of consumers and producers: if consumers want more of a product, the price tends to rise, encouraging firms to supply more. You should be able to explain these functions clearly, using a specific market as an example.
- Markets bring together buyers and sellers.
- Price mechanism allocates resources through signals and incentives.
- The three key questions: what to produce, how to produce, for whom to produce.
- Example: the housing market – rising prices signal builders to construct more houses.
5. Demand: The Demand Curve and Its Determinants |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices. The demand curve slopes downwards, reflecting the law of demand: as price falls, quantity demanded increases. A movement along the curve is caused by a change in the good's own price. A shift of the entire demand curve to the right (increase in demand) is caused by factors such as a rise in income (for normal goods), a fall in the price of complements, or a rise in the price of substitutes. When revising, practise drawing a clear downward-sloping demand curve and labelling both a movement along the curve and a shift.
- Law of demand: as price falls, quantity demanded rises (ceteris paribus).
- Movement along the curve = change in price.
- Shift of the curve = change in non-price determinants.
- Key determinants of demand: income, tastes, prices of related goods, population, advertising.
6. Supply: The Supply Curve and Its Determinants |
Supply shows the quantity that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices. The supply curve slopes upwards: a higher price leads to a higher quantity supplied, as producers are motivated by the prospect of greater revenue. A change in the good's own price causes a movement along the supply curve. A shift to the right (increase in supply) can be caused by lower costs of production, improvements in technology, or favourable weather for agricultural goods. In your revision, draw a supply and demand diagram for a product and show how a subsidy would shift the supply curve.
- Law of supply: as price rises, quantity supplied rises.
- Movement along the supply curve = caused by a change in price.
- Shift factors: costs of production, technology, taxes, subsidies, weather, number of sellers.
- An outward shift (right) means more is supplied at every price.
7. Market Equilibrium and Price Determination |
Market equilibrium occurs where the demand curve and supply curve intersect. At this price, the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied, so there is no tendency for the price to change. If the market price is above equilibrium, a surplus develops, putting downward pressure on price. If the price is below equilibrium, a shortage emerges, pushing the price upwards. Year 9 OCR questions often ask you to draw the curves and label the equilibrium price and quantity. You should also be able to explain how changes in demand or supply lead to a new equilibrium price and quantity.
- Equilibrium: quantity demanded = quantity supplied.
- Excess supply (surplus) pushes price down.
- Excess demand (shortage) pushes price up.
- A shift in demand or supply creates a new equilibrium.
8. Price Elasticity: Introducing PED |
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. It is calculated as:
PED = (% change in quantity demanded) ÷ (% change in price)
Goods with many close substitutes, such as different chocolate bars, tend to have more elastic demand. Necessities like bread usually have inelastic demand. You do not need to calculate precise values with data in Year 9, but you should be able to explain what makes demand elastic or inelastic, and why elasticity matters for a firm's pricing decisions. For instance, a firm selling an inelastic good can raise its price to increase total revenue.
PED = (需求量变动百分比)÷(价格变动百分比)
- Elastic demand: quantity demanded changes by a greater percentage than price.
- Inelastic demand: quantity demanded changes by a smaller percentage.
- Determinants of PED: substitutes, necessity vs luxury, time, proportion of income.
- If demand is elastic, raising price lowers total revenue.
9. Production, Costs and Revenue Concepts |
Firms combine factors of production to produce output. Total cost is the sum of fixed costs (which do not vary with output, such as rent) and variable costs (which rise as output rises, like raw materials). Total revenue is price multiplied by quantity sold. Profit is total revenue minus total cost. In Year 9, you need to understand these concepts and apply them to simple scenarios. For example, if a lemonade stand has a fixed cost of £5 for the stall and variable costs of £0.50 per cup, you should be able to work out total cost for 20 cups and the profit if each cup sells for £1.
- Fixed costs: do not change with output, e.g. factory lease.
- Variable costs: change directly with output, e.g. ingredients.
- Total revenue = price × quantity sold.
- Profit = total revenue – total cost.
10. Using Diagrams and Key Terms in Answers |
In OCR Economics, you earn marks by using precise terminology and well-labelled diagrams. Always label your axes (price on the vertical, quantity on the horizontal), draw arrows to show shifts, and indicate the equilibrium point with a capital E. Practise drawing at least one fully labelled demand and supply diagram each day during the break – it only takes five minutes but the habit makes your diagrams exam-ready. When writing, sprinkle in terms like 'scarce resources', 'opportunity cost', 'ceteris paribus', and 'price mechanism' correctly. This signals to the examiner that you are thinking like an economist.
- Label axes: Price (P) on the vertical, Quantity (Q) on the horizontal.
- Use D and S for demand and supply curves; arrows for shifts.
- Equilibrium marked as E, with Pe and Qe.
- Use economic vocabulary: scarcity, opportunity cost, ceteris paribus.
11. Suggested 10-Day Revision Timetable |
Spread your revision across the winter break so that it feels light but consistent. The table below suggests a manageable daily session of around 30–40 minutes. You can swap days if needed, but try to follow the order because some topics build on earlier ones.

12. Final Tips for a Successful Revision |
Revising for Economics is not just about memorising definitions – it is about understanding relationships and being able to apply them. Use short, focused study sessions and always test yourself by explaining a concept aloud or writing key points without looking at your notes. Keep your diagrams neat and always ask yourself, 'What happens to price and quantity?' whenever there is a change in demand or supply. Over the break, review your classwork, tick off the topics in this guide, and you will return to school feeling confident and prepared.
