1. What is Economics? |

Economics is a social science that studies how individuals, firms and governments make choices when resources are limited. It is fundamentally about decision-making. Every choice we make involves weighing up the benefits against the costs, and economists try to understand and predict these choices using models and data.

The subject is usually divided into microeconomics – which looks at individual markets and the behaviour of consumers and firms – and macroeconomics, which focuses on the economy as a whole, including topics like inflation, unemployment and economic growth.

2. Scarcity and the Basic Economic Problem |

The basic economic problem is that human wants are virtually unlimited, yet the resources available to satisfy those wants are finite. This condition is called scarcity. Because of scarcity, we cannot have everything we desire, so choices must be made.

Scarcity forces every society to answer three fundamental questions: What goods and services should be produced? How should they be produced? And for whom should they be produced? The way a country answers these questions determines its economic system.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Whenever we make a choice, the next best alternative we give up is called the opportunity cost. It is not simply the monetary cost, but the value of the foregone benefit. For example, if you decide to spend an hour revising economics instead of playing video games, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have gained from gaming.

Understanding opportunity cost helps individuals, businesses and governments make better decisions. A government that chooses to build a new hospital may use funds that could have been spent on new schools; the opportunity cost is the education that is forgone.

4. Factors of Production |

To produce goods and services, we need inputs – these are known as the factors of production. There are four main factors:

Land – all natural resources used in production, such as oil, water, forests and fertile soil. The reward for land is rent.

Labour – the human effort, both physical and mental, involved in producing goods and services. The reward for labour is wages or salaries.

Capital – man-made resources used to produce other goods, such as machinery, tools and factories. The reward for capital is interest.

Enterprise – the willingness and ability to take risks and combine the other factors of production to start a business. The reward for enterprise is profit.

5. Economic Systems |

An economic system describes how a country organises the allocation of resources. The three main types are market economies, planned economies and mixed economies.

In a market economy, decisions about what, how and for whom to produce are made largely by the interactions of consumers and firms through the price mechanism. The government’s role is minimal. The United States is often cited as an example, though no economy is purely market-based.

In a planned economy, the government makes all key decisions about resource allocation and often owns most of the productive resources. North Korea is a contemporary example. Such systems aim for greater equality but often suffer from inefficiency and a lack of innovation.

Most countries today operate a mixed economy, where both the market and the government play important roles. The UK, for example, has private firms that respond to market signals, but the government also provides public goods like healthcare and education.

6. Demand and Supply |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices, over a given period of time. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus (all other things being equal), as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls.

A demand schedule can help you see this relationship clearly. Below is a simple example for cinema tickets:

Price per ticket (£)Quantity demanded (tickets per week)
1250
1080
8120
6180

Supply, on the other hand, is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices. The law of supply says that as the price of a good rises, the quantity supplied also rises, because higher prices tend to increase profits and incentivise production.

7. Market Equilibrium |

A market is in equilibrium when the quantity demanded by consumers equals the quantity supplied by producers at a particular price. This is the price at which there is no tendency for change – it is often called the market-clearing price.

If the current price is above equilibrium, there will be excess supply (a surplus), putting downward pressure on price. If the price is below equilibrium, excess demand (a shortage) creates upward pressure. Through these adjustments, the market moves towards equilibrium without any central planning – a process Adam Smith famously described as the 'invisible hand'.

8. Price Elasticity of Demand (Introduction) |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures how responsive the quantity demanded of a good is to a change in its price. It is calculated using the formula:

PED = % Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ % Change in Price

If the answer is greater than 1 (ignoring the negative sign), demand is price elastic – consumers are very sensitive to price changes. If it is less than 1, demand is price inelastic – quantity demanded changes proportionally less than the price.

Goods with many substitutes, like branded cereals, tend to have elastic demand. Necessities such as electricity or life-saving medicines tend to have inelastic demand because consumers cannot easily reduce consumption even when prices rise. Understanding elasticity helps firms predict how a price change might affect their total revenue.

9. Market Failure and Government Intervention |

Markets do not always work perfectly. When the price mechanism leads to an inefficient allocation of resources, economists say there is market failure. Common causes include externalities, public goods and information gaps.

An externality occurs when the actions of consumers or producers affect a third party who is not directly involved in the transaction. Pollution from a factory, for instance, imposes costs on local residents – a negative externality. Education can create positive externalities by benefiting the wider community through a more skilled workforce.

To correct market failure, governments can intervene. They might impose taxes on products that generate negative externalities, such as sugary drinks or petrol, to reduce consumption. They may also provide subsidies for goods with positive externalities, like vaccinations, or directly fund public goods like street lighting that the free market would under-provide.

10. Introduction to Macroeconomics |

While microeconomics zooms in on individual markets, macroeconomics looks at the big picture. It studies the performance, structure and behaviour of the entire economy. Key objectives for most governments include stable economic growth, low unemployment and low and stable inflation.

Aggregate demand (AD) is the total spending on goods and services in an economy over a period of time. It consists of consumption by households, investment by firms, government spending, and net exports (exports minus imports). Changes in any of these components can push the economy into expansion or contraction.

11. Key Economic Indicators |

To assess the health of an economy, economists and governments track several indicators. The three you will hear about most often are GDP, the unemployment rate and the inflation rate.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a year. When GDP grows over time, it usually signals that the economy is expanding. If it shrinks for two consecutive quarters, the economy is said to be in a recession.

The unemployment rate is the percentage of the labour force that is actively seeking work but cannot find a job. High unemployment wastes human resources and can increase poverty and social problems.

The inflation rate is the sustained increase in the general price level, calculated using the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) in the UK. A moderate inflation rate is considered normal, but very high inflation erodes purchasing power, while deflation can lead to falling demand and job losses.

12. Summer Study Tips for Year 9 Economists | 给 Year 9 经济学者的暑期学习建议

Economics is a subject that comes alive when you connect it to the real world. Over the summer, try to build a habit of reading a reputable news source at least twice a week. Look out for stories about interest rate decisions, trade disputes, or changes in petrol prices and ask yourself: what economic concepts might be at work here?

Make a simple glossary of the key terms introduced in this article – words like opportunity cost, elasticity, equilibrium and aggregate demand. Writing definitions in your own words is one of the best ways to cement your understanding. You could even create illustrated flashcards.

Finally, try discussing economic ideas with family or friends. Explaining why cinema popcorn is so expensive or why your favourite coffee shop might raise its prices helps you practise using economic reasoning. Economics is everywhere – enjoy discovering it!
