Economics is a fascinating subject that helps us understand how the world works. From the choices we make every day to the big decisions governments face, economics is all about making the best use of limited resources. This article covers the essential knowledge for Year 9 students following the AQA Economics pathway, breaking down key concepts in both English and Chinese to support bilingual learning.
1. What is Economics? |
Economics is the social science that studies how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices when resources are scarce.
It focuses on the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services to meet people's wants and needs.
The subject is divided into microeconomics, which looks at individual markets and decision-makers, and macroeconomics, which examines the economy as a whole.
2. Scarcity and the Economic Problem |
Scarcity means that there are not enough resources to satisfy all human wants. Resources are limited, but wants are unlimited.
This creates the fundamental economic problem: we must make choices about what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom to produce it.
Even the richest countries face scarcity because wants grow faster than the resources available.
3. Opportunity Cost |
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice.
For example, if a student decides to spend an hour revising economics instead of playing video games, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment and relaxation from gaming.
Every decision has an opportunity cost, which helps us weigh the true cost of our actions. It is not just about money but also about time and other resources.
4. Factors of Production |
The resources used to produce goods and services are called factors of production. There are four main categories: land, labour, capital, and enterprise.
Land includes all natural resources such as water, minerals, and forests. Labour refers to the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production.
Capital is anything man-made used to produce goods, like machinery and tools. Enterprise is the ability to bring the other three factors together to create a business, taking risks for profit.
These factors are scarce, which is why their use involves an opportunity cost.
5. Basic Economic Questions |
Because of scarcity, every society must answer three basic economic questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?
'What to produce?' involves deciding which goods and services should be given priority. 'How to produce?' concerns the methods and combination of resources used.
'For whom to produce?' asks who will receive the output, depending on income distribution and the type of economic system.
6. Supply and Demand |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices. The law of demand states that as price rises, quantity demanded falls, assuming other factors stay constant (ceteris paribus).
Supply is the quantity that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. The law of supply states that as price rises, quantity supplied increases, ceteris paribus.
A demand curve slopes downward, and a supply curve slopes upward. These concepts are the building blocks of market analysis.
7. Market Equilibrium |
Market equilibrium occurs where the supply and demand curves intersect. At this point, the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded, so there is no shortage or surplus.
If the price is set above equilibrium, there will be excess supply (a surplus); if the price is below equilibrium, there will be excess demand (a shortage).
Prices tend to move towards the equilibrium level naturally through the interaction of buyers and sellers.
8. Price Mechanism |
The price mechanism describes how prices act as signals to allocate scarce resources. Rationing, signalling, and incentive functions are its three main roles.
The rationing function: when a good becomes scarcer, its price rises, which discourages some consumers from buying it, leaving the good for those willing to pay more.
The signalling function: price changes send information to consumers and producers. A rising price tells producers to produce more and consumers to reduce consumption.
The incentive function: higher prices motivate firms to increase production because of higher profits, while lower prices encourage consumers to buy more.
9. Elasticity – An Introduction |
Elasticity measures how much one variable changes in response to a change in another. The most common type for Year 9 is price elasticity of demand (PED).
Price elasticity of demand = (% change in quantity demanded) ÷ (% ice). If the result is greater than 1, demand is elastic; if less than 1, it is inelastic.
Goods with close substitutes, like brands of cola, tend to have elastic demand. Necessities like basic food typically have inelastic demand.
10. Markets and Economic Systems |
A market is any place or system that brings buyers and sellers together. This can be a physical location or an online platform.
Economic systems determine how the three basic questions are answered. The main types are free-market economies, centrally planned economies, and mixed economies.
In a free market, decisions are driven by consumer spending and firm choices with little government intervention. In a planned economy, the government makes most economic decisions. Most countries, including the UK, have mixed economies combining market forces with government provision.
11. Money and Its Functions |
Money is anything widely accepted as a means of payment. It serves four key functions: medium of exchange, unit of account, store of value, and standard of deferred payment.
Medium of exchange allows people to trade without bartering. Unit of account lets us compare the value of different goods easily.
Store of value means money can hold purchasing power over time. Standard of deferred payment enables borrowing and lending in a reliable way.
12. Specialisation and Division of Labour |
Specialisation occurs when workers, firms, or countries concentrate on producing a narrow range of goods and services in which they have an advantage.
Division of labour is breaking a production process into separate tasks, with each worker focusing on one task. This increases efficiency and output.
Benefits include higher productivity, lower average costs, and more skilled workers. However, workers may become bored doing repetitive tasks.
Specialisation leads to greater interdependence and makes trade essential for obtaining goods we do not produce ourselves.
