📚 GCSE Physics: Wave Properties and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Explained | GCSE

Waves are one of the most reliable sources of marks in GCSE Physics, yet they are also one of the topics where students lose marks most easily because definitions, units and the order of the electromagnetic spectrum must be exact. This guide covers the definition of a wave, the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves, the key wave quantities and the wave equation, how waves are measured in the laboratory, the three behaviours of reflection, refraction and diffraction, sound and ultrasound, and the full electromagnetic spectrum with the uses and dangers of every region.

1. What Is a Wave? |

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter overall. When a wave travels through a medium or through a vacuum, the particles or fields oscillate about a fixed position, but they do not travel along with the wave. This is why a floating cork bobs up and down on sea waves instead of being carried forward with them: energy moves, matter does not.

Waves can be classified by what they need in order to travel. Mechanical waves, such as sound, water waves and seismic waves, require a medium of particles to travel through. Electromagnetic waves, such as light, microwaves and X-rays, do not need a medium and can travel through a vacuum, which is why sunlight can reach the Earth across empty space.

Two useful ideas follow from this definition. First, waves can be used to carry information, because a change in the wave can encode a signal. Second, waves can be used to carry energy, which is why microwave ovens heat food and why laser light can cut metal.

2. Transverse and Longitudinal Waves |

A transverse wave is one in which the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction in which the wave transfers energy. Light, all electromagnetic waves, water surface waves and seismic S-waves are transverse. In a transverse wave you can identify crests, which are the highest points, and troughs, which are the lowest points.

A longitudinal wave is one in which the oscillations are parallel to the direction in which the wave transfers energy. Sound waves, ultrasound and seismic P-waves are longitudinal. Instead of crests and troughs, a longitudinal wave shows compressions, where particles are pushed close together, and rarefactions, where particles are spread further apart.

Oscillation direction | 振动方向 Perpendicular to energy transfer | 垂直于能量传递方向 Parallel to energy transfer | 平行于能量传递方向
Key features | 主要特征 Crests and troughs | 波峰与波谷 Compressions and rarefactions | 压缩区与稀疏区
Can travel through vacuum? Yes (if electromagnetic) | 可以(若为电磁波) No, a medium is needed | 不可以,需要介质

A classic exam question asks you to describe evidence that sound is longitudinal or that light is transverse. The standard answer is that sound cannot travel through a vacuum but light can, and that sound produces compressions and rarefactions in a medium whereas light can be polarised, which only transverse waves can do.

3. Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency and Period |

Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its rest or equilibrium position. It is measured in metres. For sound, a larger amplitude means a louder sound; for light, a larger amplitude means a brighter light. Amplitude is not the same as wavelength, and mixing them up is a very common examination error.

Wavelength is the distance between two successive identical points on a wave, for example from crest to crest or from compression to compression. It is given the symbol λ (lambda) and is measured in metres. In diagrams, always measure between matching points on the wave, never between a crest and the next trough.

Frequency is the number of complete waves passing a fixed point each second. It is measured in hertz (Hz), where 1 Hz means one complete wave per second. A higher frequency means a higher-pitched sound or, for visible light, a colour closer to the violet end of the spectrum.

Period is the time taken for one complete wave to pass a point, measured in seconds. Period and frequency are reciprocals of each other:

T = 1 ÷ f    and    f = 1 ÷ T

of 1 ÷ 50 = 0.02 s. A wave with a period of 0.004 s has a frequency of 1 ÷ 0.004 = 250 Hz.

4. The Wave Equation and Wave Speed |

The wave equation links speed, frequency and wavelength and is one of the few equations you must be able to recall and apply without it being given:

v = f × λ

In this equation, v is wave speed in metres per second (m/s), f is frequency in hertz (Hz) and λ is wavelength in metres (m). The equation works for all waves, including sound, light, water waves and seismic waves.

h is λ = v ÷ f = (3.0 × 10⁸) ÷ (100 × 10⁶) = 3.0 m. Notice how the answer is a sensible length for a radio aerial.

一个计算示例:某电台以100 MHz(100 × 10⁶ Hz)广播。

units first: 1 MHz = 1 × 10⁶ Hz, 1 kHz = 1 × 10³ Hz, 1 nm = 1 × 10⁻⁹ m, and 1 cm = 0.01 m.

One subtlety worth remembering: when a wave crosses a boundary into a different medium, its frequency stays the same but its speed and wavelength change. This is why light refracts when it enters glass, and it is a favourite point for higher-tier questions.

5. Measuring Waves in the Laboratory |

A ripple tank is used to study water waves and to measure their wavelength, frequency and speed. A vibrating bar or dipper creates straight or circular ripples on a shallow layer of water, a lamp above the tank projects the pattern onto a screen below, and the waves appear as alternating bright and dark bands.

by ten is far more accurate than measuring a single wave. To find the speed, use v = f × λ with the frequency set on the vibration generator.

e. The time period T is read from the horizontal scale by measuring the distance for one complete cycle and multiplying by the time-base setting, then frequency is calculated with f = 1 ÷ T.

On an oscilloscope, a taller trace means a larger amplitude and therefore a louder sound, while a trace with more cycles across the screen means a higher frequency and therefore a higher pitch. Students should practise describing both changes using the correct vocabulary of amplitude and frequency, not "bigger" and "faster".

6. Reflection, Refraction and Diffraction |

Reflection occurs when a wave bounces off a surface. For a plane mirror or any smooth surface, the law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal, which is an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface. Smooth surfaces give specular reflection and produce a clear image, while rough surfaces give diffuse reflection, which is why we can see non-shiny objects at all.

Refraction occurs when a wave crosses a boundary between two media and changes speed, which causes a change of direction. When light passes from air into glass or water it slows down and bends towards the normal; when it passes from glass or water into air it speeds up and bends away from the normal. If the angle of incidence is zero, the ray passes straight through with no change of direction.

Diffraction is the spreading of waves when they pass through a gap or around an obstacle. Diffraction is most noticeable when the size of the gap is roughly equal to the wavelength of the wave. This explains why low-frequency sound with a long wavelength can be heard around a corner, and why radio waves can be received behind a hill while television signals, with much shorter wavelengths, may not be.

Diffraction also explains the limit of optical instruments: because light has to bend around a circular aperture, no optical telescope or microscope can resolve detail smaller than roughly half a wavelength of the light used.

7. Sound Waves and Ultrasound |

Sound is a longitudinal mechanical wave. It needs a medium such as air, water or a solid, and it cannot travel through a vacuum, which is the direct evidence that it is not an electromagnetic wave. In a sound wave, particles vibrate backwards and forwards along the direction of travel, creating compressions and rarefactions that pass energy along.

The speed of sound depends on the medium. Typical values to remember are about 330 m/s in air, about 1500 m/s in water and about 5000 m/s in steel. Sound travels faster in solids because the particles are closer together and can pass the vibration on more quickly. The frequency range of human hearing is roughly 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz.

Ultrasound is sound with a frequency above 20 000 Hz, which is too high for humans to hear. It has many applications, including medical scanning and prenatal imaging, sonar for detecting fish or submarines, cleaning delicate items such as jewellery and surgical instruments, and measuring distance by timing an echo. Bats and dolphins also use echolocation in this way.

r that the sound travels to the object and back again, so the time must be halved before multiplying by the speed.

8. The Electromagnetic Spectrum: An Overview |

The electromagnetic spectrum is the continuous family of electromagnetic waves, arranged from the longest wavelength and lowest frequency to the shortest wavelength and highest frequency. The order you must memorise is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.

10⁻¹ m to 10⁴ m Broadcasting, TV, radio communication Low, non-ionising
Microwave | 微波 10⁻³ m to 10⁻¹ m Satellite links, mobile phones, cooking Internal heating of body tissue
Infrared | 红外线 7 × 10⁻⁷ m to 10⁻³ m Heaters, remote controls, thermal imaging Skin burns
Visible | 可见光 4 × 10⁻⁷ m to 7 × 10⁻⁷ m Vision, photography, fibre optics Bright light can damage the eyes
Ultraviolet | 紫外线 10⁻⁸ m to 4 × 10⁻⁷ m Sun tanning, sterilising water, fluorescent lamps Skin cancer, eye damage
X-rays | X射线 10⁻¹¹ m to 10⁻⁸ m Medical imaging, security scanners Ionising, cell mutation and cancer
Less than 10⁻¹¹ m Cancer treatment, sterilising equipment Ionising, cell mutation and cancer

Only a tiny part of the spectrum is visible to the human eye. Within the visible region, red light has the longest wavelength and lowest frequency, while violet light has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency. Remembering this single fact resolves many multiple-choice questions about the spectrum.

9. Shared Properties of All Electromagnetic Waves |

All electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. Their oscillations are electric and magnetic fields varying at right angles to each other, and both are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. No electromagnetic wave is longitudinal, so polarisation experiments can be performed on every part of the spectrum in principle.

the speed is fixed in a vacuum, the wave equation v = f × λ means that as frequency increases across the spectrum, wavelength must decrease proportionally.

All electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum, so they do not require particles to propagate. All of them transfer energy from one place to another. All of them can be reflected, refracted, diffracted and absorbed, and all of them can be emitted and absorbed by matter, which is the basis of how they are detected.

When electromagnetic radiation passes from one medium into another, such as from air into glass, its frequency stays the same but its speed and wavelength change. This is exactly the same rule that applies to sound and water waves.

10. Uses of the EM Spectrum Regions |

Radio waves are used for television, radio broadcasting and long-distance communication. They have long wavelengths, so they diffract noticeably around hills and buildings, and they can also pass through the atmosphere to reach satellites. Different national and international agreements allocate different frequency bands to different services to prevent interference.

Microwaves are used for satellite communication, mobile phone networks, radar and cooking. In a microwave oven, the microwaves are absorbed by water molecules in the food, causing them to vibrate and heat the food from the inside. Mobile phone signals use microwaves because they can pass through the ionosphere and be received by base stations.

Infrared is used in electric heaters, toasters, remote controls, thermal imaging cameras and optical fibre communication. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit infrared, so thermal cameras can detect people in darkness. Optical fibres carry infrared signals coded as pulses of light with very low loss.

Visible light is used for vision, photography, illumination and fibre optics. Ultraviolet is used in sun beds, in sterilising water and medical equipment, and in fluorescent lamps where UV is absorbed by a coating that re-emits visible light. X-rays are used in medical imaging, airport security scanners and industrial inspection. Gamma rays are used to sterilise medical instruments and food, and in radiotherapy to destroy cancer cells.
