📚 GCSE Physics Circuits: Core Exam Points Explained | GCSE
Electric circuits are the single most examined topic in GCSE Physics. Whether you sit AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC or Cambridge IGCSE, circuits questions appear in every paper and carry marks for recall, calculation, practical skills and extended explanation. This guide works through every core circuit idea you need, from the definitions of charge and current to the rules for series and parallel networks, component characteristics, electrical power and the exam techniques that turn a good answer into full marks.
Circuit questions typically account for 15-25 percent of the marks in a Physics paper, and they are almost always the topic that links to other areas such as energy transfer, mains electricity, the national grid and electromagnetism. Examiners like circuits because they can test three things at once: a definition, a calculation and a practical method. If you master circuits, you also build the foundation for A-level Physics, where Kirchhoff's laws and internal resistance build directly on these ideas.
Before you revise the rules, make sure you are comfortable moving between three quantities: charge, current and potential difference. Every calculation in this topic is built from combinations of these three, plus resistance, power and time.
2. Charge, Current and the Ampere |
Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge. Charge is measured in coulombs (C) and current in amperes (A), where one ampere is one coulomb per second. The relationship is written as:
Q = I × t
where Q is charge in coulombs, I is current in amperes and t is time in seconds. Always convert minutes to seconds before substituting: 5 minutes is 300 s, not 5.
ctrons, divide by the charge on one electron, 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C, giving 3.75 × 10²⁰ electrons.
In a metal, current is carried by electrons; in an electrolyte, by ions.
An ammeter is always connected in series with the component being measured.
An ideal ammeter has negligible resistance so it does not change the current.
3. Potential Difference, EMF and the Volt |
Potential difference (pd) is the energy transferred from electrical energy to other forms per unit charge as charge passes through a component. Electromotive force (emf) is the energy transferred to electrical energy per unit charge inside a source such as a cell or battery. Both are measured in volts, where:
V = W ÷ Q
One volt is one joule per coulomb. In everyday wording, pd is the "push" that drives current around the circuit, and emf is the "push" the cell provides.
allel across a component, and an ideal voltmeter has very high resistance so that almost no current flows through it.
Cells in series add their emfs: two 1.5 V cells give 3.0 V.
Cells in parallel give the same emf but last longer before running down.
If cells are connected in opposition, the smaller emf is subtracted.
4. Resistance and Ohm's Law |
Resistance is a measure of how difficult it is for current to flow through a component. It is defined by the equation:
R = V ÷ I
Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω). One ohm is the resistance of a component when a potential difference of 1 V drives a current of 1 A through it.
Ohm's law states that the current through an ohmic conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, provided the temperature remains constant. On an I-V graph this appears as a straight line through the origin.
the pd doubles to 12 V and the temperature has not changed, the current doubles to 0.50 A.
Longer wire: more resistance, because there are more collisions.
Thicker wire (larger cross-sectional area): less resistance.
Higher temperature: more resistance in a metal, because ions vibrate more.
5. Series Circuits: Rules and Reasoning |
In a series circuit there is only one path for the current, so the current is the same at every point. The supply pd is shared between the components, and the pd across each component adds up to the supply pd. Resistance values simply add together:
Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ …
1.0 A. The pds are V₁ = 1.0 × 2.0 = 2.0 V and V₂ = 1.0 × 4.0 = 4.0 V, which sum to 6.0 V.
总电阻为6.0 Ω,故I = V ÷ R = 6.0 ÷ 6.0 = 1.0 A。
If one component breaks, the whole circuit stops working.
The largest resistance takes the largest share of the supply pd.
Adding resistors in series always increases the total resistance and reduces the current.
6. Parallel Circuits: Rules and Reasoning |
In a parallel circuit each branch is connected directly across the supply, so the pd across each branch is the same. The current splits between the branches, and the sum of the branch currents equals the current drawn from the supply. The total resistance is less than the smallest individual resistance:
1 ÷ Rtotal = 1 ÷ R₁ + 1 ÷ R₂
e supply current is 3.0 A. R = V ÷ I = 6.0 ÷ 3.0 = 2.0 Ω, which is indeed less than 3.0 Ω.
支路电流分别为1.0 A与2.0 A,总电流3.0 A。
If one branch breaks, the other branches keep working.
The branch with the smallest resistance takes the largest current.
Domestic wiring uses parallel circuits so that each appliance gets the full mains pd and can be switched independently.
| Current 电流 | Same everywhere 处处相同 | Splits, sums to supply 分流,合等于总电流 |
| Pd 电势差 | Shared, sums to supply 分压,合等于总电压 | Same across each branch 各支路相同 |
| Resistance 电阻 | Adds up 相加 | Totals less than smallest 小于最小者 |
7. I-V Graphs and Component Characteristics | I-V
An I-V graph plots current on the vertical axis against potential difference on the horizontal axis. For a fixed resistor at constant temperature it is a straight line through the origin, showing that current is proportional to pd. The gradient equals 1 ÷ R, so a steeper line means a smaller resistance.
For a filament lamp the graph curves: as the current increases, the filament gets hotter, the metal ions vibrate more, and the resistance rises. That is why the graph flattens at higher pds. This is a classic "explain" question, so always mention the temperature rise.
Ohmic conductor: straight line through the origin, resistance constant.
Filament lamp: S-shaped curve, resistance increases as temperature rises.
Diode: negligible current in reverse, sharp rise above about 0.6 V in forward bias.
8. Thermistors, LDRs and Sensing Circuits |
A thermistor is a resistor whose resistance changes with temperature. The type used in GCSE is the NTC thermistor: as temperature increases, its resistance decreases. That happens because more charge carriers are released, so it becomes easier for current to flow.
An LDR (light-dependent resistor) behaves in the same way but responds to light intensity: as light intensity increases, its resistance decreases. Both components are used in potential divider circuits to sense a change and produce a change in output pd, which can switch a device on or off.
Thermostat: a thermistor controls a heater by switching it off when the room gets warm.
Street light: an LDR switches lamps on at dusk when light intensity falls.
In a potential divider, the pd across each component is proportional to its resistance, so the output pd changes as the sensor's resistance changes.
9. Diodes, LEDs and Conventional Current |
A diode allows current to flow in one direction only. Connected in forward bias, it conducts once the pd exceeds roughly 0.6 V; in reverse bias it has an extremely high resistance and practically no current flows. A light-emitting diode (LED) is a diode that emits light when it conducts, and it is far more efficient than a filament lamp because less energy is wasted as heat.
Remember that conventional current is defined as the flow of positive charge from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of a cell, outside the cell. Inside the cell, the direction is reversed. In reality, electrons flow from negative to positive, which is opposite to conventional current.
Diodes are used to protect circuits and to convert alternating current into direct current (rectification).
LEDs are used in indicators, displays and modern lighting because they run cooler and last longer.
Always check the diode symbol direction in a circuit diagram before deciding whether current flows.
10. Power, Energy and the Cost of Electricity |
Power is the rate of energy transfer, measured in watts (W). In a circuit, power is calculated using any of these three forms of the same idea:
P = V × I P = I² × R P = V² ÷ R
kWh): divide the power in watts by 1000 to get kilowatts, then multiply by the time in hours. Cost = kWh × price per unit.
Wh the cost is about 0.63. The correct fuse rating would be the next size above the working current, so a 13 A fuse, not a 5 A fuse.
Always choose a fuse slightly above the normal working current, never exactly equal to it.
To convert joules to kilowatt-hours, divide by 3.6 × 10⁶.
Energy is always conserved: the total energy transferred to a device equals the useful energy plus the energy wasted, usually by heating.
11. Circuit Symbols, Instruments and Practical Skills |
Examiners expect accurate circuit diagrams using standard symbols: cell and battery, switch, fixed resistor, variable resistor, filament lamp, diode, LED, thermistor, LDR, ammeter, voltmeter and fuse. Marks are lost for drawing a voltmeter in series or an ammeter in parallel - a very common and very avoidable error.
Practical work usually involves building series and parallel circuits, measuring current and pd, and testing I-V characteristics of a resistor, a filament lamp and a diode. Record at least six readings across the full range, let components cool between readings for the lamp, and check that the ammeter range is large enough before switching on.
Repeat readings and calculate a mean to reduce the effect of random error.
Connect the circuit with the switch open, then close it only to take a reading.
For a filament lamp, the resistance rises as the current increases, so the I-V graph is not a straight line.
12. Exam Technique and Common Errors |
Most circuit calculation marks come from method, not from the final answer. Write the equation, substitute the numbers with units, then state the answer with the correct unit. If the answer looks unreasonable - a 230 V appliance drawing 100 A, for example - go back and check whether you have used the series rule where the parallel rule applies.
For longer "explain" questions worth four to six marks, build your answer in steps: state the physics idea, apply it to the circuit, and then give the consequence. For example: light intensity increases, LDR resistance decreases, its share of the pd decreases, so the pd across the fixed resistor increases, and the lamp switches on.
