📚 A-Level Physics Mechanics: Core Concepts and Exam Breakthroughs | A-Level

Mechanics is the largest and most heavily examined topic in every A-Level Physics specification, whether you sit AQA, OCR, Edexcel or Cambridge International. It also underpins everything that follows: waves, fields, thermal physics and even quantum ideas all borrow the language of force, energy and momentum that you meet in your first term. This guide breaks the core mechanics content into twelve focused sections, pairing the essential theory with the exact skills examiners reward in written papers.

1. The Shape of the Mechanics Module |

Mechanics in A-Level Physics is usually split across two years. In the first year you meet kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum, work and energy, and often the properties of materials. In the second year the same ideas are pushed further into circular motion, oscillations and gravitational fields. The key insight is that these are not separate topics - they are the same few principles applied in different contexts, and examiners deliberately design questions that combine them.

A typical exam question might ask you to find the speed of a block at the bottom of a slope (energy), then the force in a rope during the swing (circular motion), then the tension when the block is at rest (moments). Each step uses a different "chapter" but only one or two equations. Building a mental map of how the topics connect is therefore worth more than memorising isolated formulas.

2. Scalars, Vectors and Resolving Forces |

A scalar has magnitude only; a vector has both magnitude and direction. This distinction matters because nearly every mechanics error at A-Level comes from treating a vector as if direction did not exist. Displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, momentum and impulse are vectors. Distance, speed, mass, time, energy, power and temperature are scalars.

Vectors are added tip-to-tail. For two perpendicular components the resultant magnitude follows Pythagoras, and its direction follows a tangent ratio. Any vector can be resolved into perpendicular components using the sine and cosine of the angle it makes with a chosen axis.

Fx = F cos θ   Fy = F sin θ   F = √Fx² + Fy²

For a force at angle θ above the horizontal, the horizontal component is F cos θ and the vertical component is F sin θ. A very common mistake is to swap the two, which usually happens when the angle is measured from the vertical rather than the horizontal. Always sketch the triangle before writing the equation.

3. Newton's Three Laws and Free-Body Diagrams |

Newton's first law states that an object remains at rest or moves with constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force. In equation form, a resultant force of zero means zero acceleration - which is exactly why a car travelling at a steady 70 mph along a straight road has balanced driving and resistive forces. Newton's second law links resultant force to the rate of change of momentum, which for constant mass reduces to the familiar relationship between force, mass and acceleration.

Fnet = m a = Δp / Δt

Newton's third law is the most frequently misquoted. The two forces in a third-law pair act on different objects, are the same type of force, and are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. The weight of a book and the normal force from the table are not a third-law pair - they act on the same object and are equal only because the book is in equilibrium.

A free-body diagram must show only the forces acting on the object you are analysing, each drawn from the point where it acts. Standard forces to check for are:

Terminal velocity is the classic application: as a falling object speeds up, drag increases until the upward drag equals the downward weight. The resultant force becomes zero, acceleration becomes zero, and the object continues at constant velocity. Examiners frequently ask you to describe this sequence in words, so practise writing it in three clear stages.

The SUVAT equations apply only to motion with constant acceleration in a straight line. Before using them, identify which of the five quantities is unknown and which one is not mentioned at all - choosing the equation that omits the missing quantity is the fastest route to the answer.

a acceleration 加速度 m s⁻²
t time 时间 s

v = u + at

s = ut + ½at²

v² = u² + 2as

s = ½(u + v)t

Motion graphs carry marks that are easy to secure. On a displacement-time graph the gradient gives velocity; on a velocity-time graph the gradient gives acceleration and the area between the line and the time axis gives displacement. Areas below the axis count as negative, which is how you handle an object that reverses direction.

and acceleration. A ball thrown upwards with a = -9.81 m s⁻² will have a negative velocity on the way down, and that is a feature, not a mistake.

5. Projectile Motion |

Projectile motion is the classic example of two independent one-dimensional motions combined. Horizontally there is no acceleration (ignoring air resistance), so horizontal velocity is constant. Vertically the acceleration is g downwards, and the SUVAT equations apply exactly as for a dropped object.

x = (u cos θ) t   y = (u sin θ) t − ½ g t²

For a projectile launched from and landing on the same horizontal level, the standard results are worth knowing, though you should always be able to derive them:

Time of flight T = 2u sin θ / g

Sponsored

Maximum height H = u² sin²θ / (2g)

Range R = u² sin 2θ / g

omplementary angles such as 30° and 60° give the same range for the same launch speed. At the highest point the vertical velocity is momentarily zero but the horizontal velocity is unchanged, so the speed at the top is not zero unless the launch was vertical.

the horizontal component using Pythagoras to get the resultant speed and direction. Never add speeds directly.

6. Momentum, Impulse and Collisions |

Linear momentum is the product of mass and velocity, and it is a vector. In any isolated system - one where no external resultant force acts - total momentum is conserved. This conservation law is more general than energy conservation because it holds in inelastic collisions where kinetic energy is lost to heat, sound and deformation.

p = m v   Σpbefore = Σpafter

Impulse is the product of force and the time for which it acts, and it equals the change in momentum. On a force-time graph, impulse is the area under the curve. This relationship explains crumple zones, airbags and the follow-through in a racket stroke: extending the contact time reduces the peak force for the same momentum change.

Impulse = F Δt = Δp = m v − m u

Collisions are classified as perfectly elastic, inelastic or perfectly inelastic (the bodies coalesce and move together). In a perfectly elastic collision both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved; the extra condition is that the relative speed of approach equals the relative speed of separation.

When writing conservation equations, define a positive direction first and treat velocities as signed quantities. A ball of mass 0.2 kg moving at +4 m s⁻¹ that rebounds at −3 m s⁻¹ has a change in momentum of −1.4 kg m s⁻¹, so the impulse is 1.4 N s in the rebound direction.

7. Work, Energy and Power |

Work is done when a force moves its point of application along its own line of action. If the force is at an angle to the displacement, only the component along the displacement does work. Energy is the capacity to do work, and the work-energy principle states that the net work done on an object equals its change in kinetic energy.

W = F s cos θ   Ek = ½ m v²   Ep = m g h

P = W / t = F v

For any isolated system, energy is conserved. In problems involving slopes with friction, energy is not lost but transferred to the thermal store of the surfaces. The standard energy audit is:

Ep lost = Ek gained + work done against friction

ts a load at a rate determined by P = Fv, where F must include the weight being raised plus any resistive forces.

8. Moments, Couples and Equilibrium |

The moment of a force about a point is the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force. The unit is the newton metre (N m), not the joule, because a moment is not an energy transfer. For an object in equilibrium, two conditions must both be satisfied: the resultant force is zero, and the resultant moment about any point is zero.

M = F d   ΣF = 0   ΣM = 0

A couple is a pair of equal, opposite and parallel forces whose lines of action do not coincide. The moment of a couple is the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance between the two forces, and it produces rotation without any resultant translational force. This is why turning a steering wheel or a tap involves a couple rather than a single force.

Couple moment = F d (distance between the two forces)

The centre of gravity is the point through which the entire weight of a body may be considered to act. For a uniform regular lamina it is at the geometric centre, and an object topples when the line of action of its weight falls outside its base. Stability increases with a wider base and a lower centre of gravity.

In exam questions, take moments about the point where the most unknown forces act. That eliminates those unknowns from your equation and usually leaves a single unknown to solve in one step.

9. Circular Motion |

An object moving in a circle at constant speed is still accelerating, because its velocity is changing direction. This centripetal acceleration points towards the centre of the circle, and the force producing it is called the centripetal force. Crucially, centripetal force is not a new type of force - it is the resultant of real forces such as tension, gravity, friction or the normal contact force.
