📚 A-Level Chemistry Organic Reaction Mechanisms: Core Exam Points | A-Level

A-Level Chemistry examiners reward candidates who can draw and explain organic reaction mechanisms accurately, because a mechanism links structure, bonding and reactivity into one logical story. Whether you sit AQA, OCR, Edexcel or Cambridge International (9701), the same small family of mechanisms appears again and again, and the same marking points decide whether you gain or lose marks. This guide gathers the core mechanisms, the curly arrow conventions, the key intermediates and the exam-room language that turn a vague idea into full marks.

1. The Core Idea: Mechanisms Track Electron Movement |

Every organic mechanism in A-Level chemistry is a story about electrons, not about atoms wandering off on their own. You tell that story with curly arrows, and each arrow has exactly one legitimate meaning: it starts at a source of electron density (a lone pair, a π bond or a σ bond) and points to the atom or bond that the electron pair will attack or form. Half-arrows, often called fish-hooks, are reserved for single-electron steps such as free radical reactions.

Because mechanisms are about electron flow, exam questions almost always give you a reagent and ask what happens to the bonding. That is why memorising products alone is never enough: you must be able to justify why a nucleophile attacks one particular carbon, why a leaving group departs, and why one intermediate is more stable than another.

Two ideas sit underneath all of this. The first is that electron-rich species are attracted to electron-poor centres. The second is that reactions proceed through the pathway of lowest activation energy, so the most stable available intermediate is usually the one that forms.

2. Curly Arrow Conventions and Bond Fission |

Examiners are famously strict about arrows, and three rules cover almost every mark that students lose.

Bond fission comes in two flavours. In heterolytic fission the bonding pair goes entirely to one atom, producing ions, and this is what happens in most polar organic reactions. In homolytic fission the pair is split evenly, producing two radicals, and this requires heat or ultraviolet light.

Heterolytic: X–Y → X⁺ + Y⁻   |   Homolytic: X–Y → X• + Y•

A further convention matters for addition reactions: draw the partial charges first. Marking schemes often award a mark simply for showing δ+ on the carbon and δ− on the oxygen of a carbonyl group, or δ+ on the hydrogen of H–Br, before any arrow is drawn.

3. Electrophiles, Nucleophiles and Leaving Groups |

Definitions must be word-perfect because they are frequently asked as one-mark 'state' questions. An electrophile is an electron pair acceptor, and it is attracted to regions of high electron density. A nucleophile is an electron pair donor, and it is attracted to regions of low electron density. A leaving group is a species that departs with the bonding electron pair, and good leaving groups are weak bases that stabilise negative charge well.

Species Role Electron character Typical examples
OH⁻, CN⁻, NH₃, H₂O, :NH₂R Nucleophile Electron rich Substitution, addition to C=O
NO₂⁺, Br⁺, H⁺, AlCl₃, δ+ carbon Electrophile Electron poor Electrophilic addition, aromatic substitution
Br⁻, I⁻, H₂O, Cl⁻ Leaving group Stabilised anion SN1, SN2, elimination
Cl•, Br•, CH₃• Radical Unpaired electron Free radical substitution, polymerisation

Notice how the C–X bond in a haloalkane creates the whole pattern: the halogen is more electronegative, so carbon becomes δ+ and the halide can leave. Everything that follows in nucleophilic substitution and elimination flows from that single polarised bond.

In SN2 the nucleophile attacks the δ+ carbon from the side opposite the leaving group while the C–X bond breaks, so bond making and bond breaking happen together in a single step. The carbon passes through a five-coordinate transition state and its configuration inverts. Because the nucleophile must reach the carbon, the rate depends strongly on steric hindrance: CH₃X > primary > secondary >> tertiary.

In SN1 the C–X bond breaks first, in a slow ionisation step, to give a planar carbocation intermediate, which the nucleophile then attacks in a fast second step. Because the intermediate is planar, attack can occur from either face, so a mixture of stereoisomers results. The rate depends only on the haloalkane concentration and on carbocation stability: tertiary > secondary >> primary.

SN2: OH⁻ + CH₃Br → CH₃OH + Br⁻

SN1: (CH₃)₃C–Br → (CH₃)₃C⁺ + Br⁻  then  (CH₃)₃C⁺ + OH⁻ → (CH₃)₃C–OH

Feature SN1 SN2
Steps Two, with carbocation intermediate One, with transition state
Rate equation Rate = k[haloalkane] Rate = k[haloalkane][OH⁻]
Best substrate Tertiary Primary / methyl
Stereochemistry Racemic mixture Inversion

In an exam, do not simply write 'SN1' or 'SN2' as your answer. You must draw the full mechanism with curly arrows, label the slow step, and state the type and the intermediate. A common trap is the hydrolysis of a primary haloalkane with aqueous NaOH under reflux, which is SN2, while the same reaction with a tertiary haloalkane in warm water is SN1.

5. Elimination Reactions and the Competition with Substitution |

Elimination of hydrogen halide from a haloalkane produces an alkene, and it uses hot ethanolic NaOH or KOH rather than aqueous alkali. The hydroxide acts as a base rather than a nucleophile, removing a proton from the carbon adjacent to the one bearing the halogen, while the C–X bond breaks and a π bond forms.

As with substitution, elimination has a concerted E2 route and a stepwise E1 route through the same carbocation. The practical rule that most syllabuses expect is this: aqueous alkali and moderate warming favour substitution, while concentrated alkali in ethanol at high temperature favours elimination. Tertiary substrates eliminate easily because they form stable carbocations and have many adjacent hydrogens.

CH₃CH₂Br + OH⁻ → CH₂=CH₂ + Br⁻ + H₂O

Two further points earn marks. First, elimination can give more than one alkene, and the major product is normally the more substituted, more stable one, following the same logic as Markovnikov's rule. Second, draw the arrow from the C–H bond to the C–C bond, not to the carbon atom itself, because that arrow is forming the π bond.

6. Electrophilic Addition to Alkenes |

The alkene π bond is a region of high electron density, which makes alkenes susceptible to attack by electrophiles. The general mechanism has two steps: the electrophile attacks the π bond to form a carbocation, then the nucleophile attacks the carbocation.
