1. The Skeletal System |
The human skeleton gives the body its shape, supports soft tissues and protects vital organs. In sport, the skeleton acts as a system of levers that muscles pull on to create movement. The main bones you need to know include the cranium, clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae, pelvis, femur, patella, tibia and fibula. Learning the names and locations of these bones is the first step towards analysing movement in activities like throwing, kicking and sprinting.
2. Functions of the Skeleton |
Beyond providing shape, the skeleton has five key functions: support, protection, movement, mineral storage and blood cell production. Long bones such as the femur store calcium and phosphorus, while the marrow inside some bones is where red and white blood cells are made. During a tackle in rugby or a fall in gymnastics, the ribcage and skull shield the heart, lungs and brain. Recognising these roles helps you understand why strong, healthy bones matter for both performance and long-term wellbeing.
3. Types of Bones |
Bones are classified by shape into four groups: long bones (e.g. femur, humerus), short bones (e.g. carpals, tarsals), flat bones (e.g. cranium, sternum) and irregular bones (e.g. vertebrae). Long bones act as levers for large movements; flat bones provide broad surfaces for muscle attachment and protection; short bones give stability and shock absorption; irregular bones have specialised shapes for specific jobs, like supporting the spinal cord. Matching bone type to function is a common exam skill.
4. The Muscular System |
Muscles produce force by contracting and pulling on bones, creating movement at joints. The main voluntary muscles to learn are the deltoid, biceps, triceps, pectorals, abdominals, quadriceps, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, latissimus dorsi and gluteals. When a footballer strikes the ball, the quadriceps extend the knee while the hamstrings control the follow-through. Understanding agonist and antagonist pairs will help you analyse any sporting technique.
5. Types of Muscles and Their Roles |
The body contains three muscle types: cardiac muscle found only in the heart, smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels and organs, and skeletal muscle attached to bones. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control and is responsible for all sporting movements. Within a movement, the agonist (prime mover) contracts while the antagonist relaxes. For example, during a bicep curl the biceps is agonist and the triceps is antagonist. Fixator muscles stabilise the origin of the agonist, allowing efficient force transfer.
6. The Cardiovascular System |
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels. Its job is to transport oxygen, nutrients and hormones to working muscles, and to remove waste products such as carbon dioxide. The heart is a double pump: the right side sends blood to the lungs, the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the body. During a cross-country run, your heart rate rises to increase cardiac output, ensuring that active leg muscles receive enough oxygen to sustain effort.
7. Components of Blood |
Blood is made up of four main components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which binds oxygen and carries it to tissues. White blood cells fight infection, platelets help clotting after injury, and plasma is the liquid medium that transports dissolved substances and heat. In sport, a richer red blood cell count improves aerobic endurance, a fact that explains why athletes living at altitude can gain a training advantage.
8. The Respiratory System |
The respiratory system brings air into the body and exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the blood. Air travels through the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles before reaching tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, oxygen diffuses into capillaries while carbon dioxide moves out to be exhaled. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles work together to change the volume of the chest cavity, pulling air in and pushing it out. Efficient breathing technique is vital in swimming, rowing and distance running.
9. Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise |
Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to break down glucose and fat, producing energy slowly but sustainably. Examples include jogging, cycling and dancing. Anaerobic exercise works without oxygen and provides quick bursts of energy for high-intensity activities like sprinting or weightlifting, but produces lactic acid, which leads to muscle fatigue. Knowing the energy pathway you rely on in different sports helps you pace yourself and choose appropriate recovery strategies.
10. Components of Fitness |
Fitness is broken down into health-related and skill-related components. Health-related fitness includes cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. Skill-related fitness covers agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed. A gymnast needs great flexibility, balance and power, while a marathon runner relies on cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. Being able to link the correct components to specific sports is a fundamental GCSE PE skill.
11. Principles of Training |
To improve fitness safely and effectively, athletes apply the SPOR training principles: Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility and Tedium. Overload can be achieved by manipulating FITT variables—Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. For instance, a swimmer building endurance might gradually increase the number of laps (time) or reduce rest intervals (intensity). These principles prevent plateaus and injury while maximising adaptation.
12. Nutrition and Hydration |
A balanced diet supplies the macro- and micronutrients needed for energy, growth and repair. Carbohydrates are the main fuel for exercise; proteins aid muscle repair; fats provide long-term energy and insulation. Vitamins and minerals support everything from bone health (calcium) to oxygen transport (iron). Hydration is equally critical—losing just 2% of body weight through sweat can impair performance. Timing meals and fluids around training sessions is a practical skill that underpins athletic success.
